tags: bandwidth · cable
Though we've been talking about this for some time, Adelphia today officially announced that 16Mbps/2Mbps service is coming to Leesburg, Virginia. Like the Cox 15Mbps tiers discussed yesterday, the move is a public relations response to Fios deployment in Virginia. Premier customers in the area will be bumped to the new speeds, while preferred customers will be automatically bumped to 6Mbps/768kbps.

Re: Verizon, the competitor

Oh... I can just see / hear it now:

Former Adelphia customer calling Comcast after receiving leter describing service;

Comcast rep = Cc
Customer = PC (Pissed Customer)

CC: Hello and thank you for calling us today; how may I help you?

PC: Hi there, I just got this leter from you saying my connection speed was changing since you purchased Adelphia from my old speeds of 16Mbps down and 2 Mbps up to 4Mbps down and 384Kbs up. What's with this?

CC: Yes; that's right.. it's our network and we can do as we want; so there.

Re: Verizon, the competitor

I believe that Comcast and Roadrunner will be offering the new speeds before too long.. I mean, they will have to in order to compete. Plus I was told that by a Tech I was talking to, he seemed to know allot about what is going on, and what is to come. So, Just think.. we all should be at 16MB down, 2MB down within the next year or two. I hope so anyway
I asked the Tech about the upgrades, I asked what would happen if for instance I got the upgrade and then the next month roadrunner takes over my area, what would happen. And he told me that he knows that RoadRunner, & Comcast already have it in the works, and will roll it out toward the end of the year..
He said that Adelphia will offer the speeds starting July, And I don't know if it is true, BUT he also said that a month or so after Adelphia rolls out the Extreme Tier that it will start working it's way to different areas that don't have Docsis 2 or whatever yet.. He said within a year that I should have it..
BUT, you have to take that with a grain of salt.. Or a cup full.. hehe
WHO KNOWS.. I'm just telling you guys what he said.

No, Verizon was right. They started offering higher speed tiers, forcing the competition to do so also.

If it wasn't for Verizon there would be no 15/16 mbps broadband packages in Virginia from competing cable companies.

x2, but they'll drag their feet since they have significant clout already. Adelphia and Cox need this since they are smaller than Comcast and don't hold the same amount of market share as Comcast. Comcast can afford to sit back a while.

Then maybe down speeds would actually reach 3 like they're supposed to in the first place?

it'd be cool if speeds come to socal

Wow 15mbps/2mbps? I can't even imagine those kind of speeds especially the 2MBPs upstream. I'm in Hemet CA zip 92543, and I currently believe I have the best internet speed on the west coast for cable/dsl, with downstream of around 7MBPS and upstream of around 900KBPs. The connectivity both ways is amazingly solid. so even if my downstream stays at about 7mbits and my upstream went to 2, boy that'd be neat to see, not holding my breath though despite the fact FIOS is just a couple cities away from me.

Anyone think we have a chance of seeing these speeds in any other parts of the states?

Some of the speeds (and prices) available in other parts of the states are starting to look kinda pathetic compared to the local market.
In other words: they are getting or going to get 15mbs while we are getting barely 5mbs or slower.

Nope, Arizona has 9 Mbps from Cox.

just think... adelphia was 2048kbit down /128kbit up just two years ago... then that went to 3072/256 and now its around 4096/512kbit for standard users... we're on a steady increase here

@nash.c

I dono but here in TN @home was bought out by comcast It was good for about 6 month and here recently for about 2 moths it has done nothing but time out well at first every hour now its every 5 to 15 min and on thoes 5 min intervals it can time out up to 3 times in a row within 5 min lol. Hell and my modem finally disconected today. All I can say is they make us pay fdor basic cable to have internet and I think were gona go to satelite internet. I mean I can deal with the bad weather conection problems aslong as I can play when its ok out. Oh and I dont give a shit about 7m down who the fuck is useing 3m down all the time I whant like 1m down 3m up and I'm set lol.

Umm

Everyone is bitching about speeds, but here in Newton, NJ I have 3000 down, 512 up and i'm paying $64.99 + taxes for it, not including the local 'phone tax'. Service electric cable is 3.5down/56k up (1 way cable) and costs 80 bucks a month. Right now i miss Comcast/Verizon/Cavalier. With comcast i had 6/768 for 57.95/mo.

The sad part is the only broadband companies out here are Sprint(DSL), NetAccess (DSL), and Service Electric, none of which offer a decent package for less than $50.

Verizon FIOS Luck

The thing that is nice is that even if you can't get Verizon FIOS, Verizon FIOS will get higher bandwidth for you. This is a perfect example. COX / Adelphia are upgrading users in VA to 15 / 16 megabits per second. The reason? Verizon FIOS most popular package is the 15/2 package @ $45.95/month.

I wouldn't be bad mouthing Verizon. Here in NJ Verizon (besides rolling it out to towns all around me and hopefully getting it next year in my town) has caused Cablevision to look into 50/100mbit "residential" and "business" service.

Deployement

I've heard from an Adelphia Tech I talked to around my area and he said that about 1/2 - 2/3 of their Northeast Systems are ready for the upgrade and the rest being ready by the end of july/early august. He also said their Southeast Systems are about 1/3-1/2 are ready for the upgrade with the rest done by end of august. He didn't know anything about the westcoast or Central US.

Northern California here Adelphia, we want it too!

We'd like those speeds in Northern California as well Adelphia Of course, SBC doesn't offer DSL in most of the county (Mendocino), and the Verizon served areas in the county have no DSL equipped CO's. SBC doesn't even offer those speeds anyway. We're a relatively poor county, no senators, congressmen or lobbyists like in ole VA. They keep saying it was to match Verizon, but you can bet your bottom dollar that being so close to DC had a lot to do with it too.

Lame pitches

quote:
To better understand the impact of such speed, consider that Extreme High Speed will allow a customer to download 100 songs (roughly 5MB each) in approximately 4 minutes.
I hate these sale pitches. How many people do you know that are sharing with a full 16mbps upstream?
