Uh guys, the network is down
by Karl Bode Wednesday 13-Jul-2005 tags: alternatives · Oddities
A Stratellite is a massive airship hovering 13 miles up, supposedly capable of offering broadband service to a land mass the size of Texas. In April Sanswire unveiled an unlaunched protoype they claim costs $30 million to launch (compared to a satellite's $250 million). Last month, they signed a testing agreement with NASA.

This month they've announced a new joint venture they claim will allow them to eventually launch stratellites "throughout Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the countries of the former Soviet Union." Of course that would require actual functioning stratellites; as it stands the press release rings hollow as an effort to drum up interest and cash.

LOL - Idea is full of hot air alright

Love to know how they are going to keep them things up.

LAG time for online gaming would stink.

I thought the latency was supposed to be quite low...

Caller: Um.. my internet is down...
Support: Have you tried to reboot the modem?
Caller: Well... no...
Support: OK... lets try that first.
Caller: I would, but your blimp landed on my house...
Caller: I think this would be a system problem...

Re: LOL - Idea is full of hot air alright

Yes one of the pluses of these super low orbiting blimps is that because of their low orbit, the latency is quite minimal, so end users can have pings comparable to cable/dsl.

Re: LOL - Idea is full of hot air alright

Did the icon picture for this article remind anyone of the scene with the flying - no - falling whale, from the recent HHGttG movie? Hmm.

On another note, should this blimp-thing fly over any optical or radio-telescopes, there will be some pissed-off scientists. But at least they can also run ads on the blimp... maybe they'll have a big LED display, and have scrolling internet banner ads or something. LOL.

I can see it now... "Now introducing, NetZero BlimpSpeed! Ten times lower latency than satellite!"

Great. My games will be all blue-tinged. Will using the Internet through them make me temporarily blind?

As already mentioned, you must be thinking of synchronous satellites at 22,235 miles causing at least 240 msec round-trip lag at the speed-of-light.

These things are only 13 miles up which comes to about 0.14 msec. That's less than the average router.

I saw a clip on it on Discovery. Apparently they can stay up in the stratosphere for 8months straight and they can hold way more equipment than a standard Sat. Upgrades would be easy since they come back to ground for maintenance. It's very cool if they can pull it off.

Also...

They would also be able to mount cell-phone equiptment on these, effectively killing most "dead-zones". With exception to some cities in which buildings block the transmissions (and tower repeaters are needed), most cell-phone dead-zones could be covered with these things.

Actually, that is one advantage of low orbiting satellites and airships that latency will probably be comparable to cable/dsl connections. The signal has to travel much less distance.

I just know something is eventually going to collide with one of these things. Yeah, I know, they're above the flight path of commercial aircraft, but much like the giant inflatable pig in the Pink Floyd Animals album cover photo shoot that broke away unexpectedly, I can just imagine one of these going rogue and then taking down a spy plane or a shuttle during re-entry.

Atlantis: Uh, Houston, we have a problem.
Houston: Go ahead Atlantis.
Atlantis: BLIIIIIMMP!!!!!

If they're going to float these things, they should at least make them in the shape of giant inflated pink pigs. Maybe they could use the curly tail as the antenna.

Yes but it needs to have a big Green Dollar sign ( $ ) on each side for full effect.

Blimpband

This reminds me of the billboards in space story a few years ago. But seriously at 13 miles would a blimp have much impact on the viewshed (say for astronomer types?)

more than hot air! i have seen it all

this is crazy just like the broadband over natural gaslines too full of bs. They could spend this money else where you know..

Re: more than hot air! i have seen it all

First, who are "they," other than the investors who CHOOSE to put their money into this project and second, why elsewhere? New technologies sometimes work, sometimes they don't. If no one invested in the first airplanes because it seemed like a "bs" idea, the world would be quite different. Don't knock it because its not already happening. The idea comes first.

Free Willy

I think its kewl.Sure ping times would suck for gaming, etc, but it would be great for places that have no chance of any internet at all in the near future. The middel of some rainforest for example or way out in the boondocks.
Heck I'm sure way in the future there will be the technology to have blazing speeds and great pings via a blimp.

Re: Free Willy

Yes, and you can get internet in your car.
I can see it on the front page now:

20 CAR PILE UP

A 20 vehicle pile-up on East-11 today at around 3pm. Police report the driver was surfing the internet when he slammed into the back of a pickup which started a chain of collisions that left one dead and many others injured. The driver who started the crash was not seriously injured and is being charged with 'driving while surfing'. He is expected to serve a maximum of one month in jail...

13 miles, but any way. And, 13 miles is only 68K feet. There've been anti-air missles that could do more than that for a while, now. Ever hear of Gary Powers?

Looks good on paper

They have been talking about these things for years. On paper it looks straightforward but there must be some technical issues otherwise it should have happened by now. At 68,000 I don't think anti-aircraft or anything else ground based is of any concern

Re: Looks good on paper

But really though, if these things are only 30 million to install vs 250 per satellite, they could have a few of them up at a time, or at least have a few on standby if something did happen to one.

I think if the whole blimp-internet thing is a good idea, people make fun of it because it sounds and looks funny, but there is some good technology behind this.

OK - I can't help it, I have to be "funny" like most of the other posts...

ah dang, can't think of anything funny to say, kinda tired now.. but there are a lot more funny jokes to make about a blimp powered internet...

Re: Looks good on paper

Blimp internet sounds great and should be pushed by the people that have the power to propel these. Get politics involved, internet powered by hot air should be created by the nature of hot air.

can only hope

@adelphia.net
If they do start a blimp band i'm going to buy a house close to the launch site so when it comes down it will land close so i can loot all the hardware inside. LoL Seriously though if one of these thing fall from the sky, im sure if hardware isn't damaged, people will figure out a way to get inside and steal stuff, is it really worth the risk of losing all that equipment

Same problem as MMDS and all wireless

Folks, we've got the same problem as any "single antenna" metro wireless broadband application--SPECTRUM.

Huge footprint solutions are like trying to cover all of a metro area with one cellular antenna--technically possible, but only for a few users.

Put it on a tall tower, put it on a mountain top, or put it on a blimp--it's still just one antenna and it can't re-use frequencies. (At least the land-based approaches can possibly "sector" their coverage and have limited re-use, but a blimp flying through high altitude winds?)

Everyone talking about if they go up

Shouldn't the talk be about now that they are up there. Or atleast one of them, or did I misread this article?
