Pricey, but worth it if you've got the need
(old news - 02:22PM Tuesday Aug 09 2005)
tags: wireless · hardware
Internet News reviews the unique looking (some might say ugly) MIMO based Linksys WRT54GX. In the end you'll find most reviews harp on the price, and suggest the unit only if you've got nooks and crannies your current 802.11g gear just won't reach. Still no word on development of third party firmware for this unit, though Sveasoft had discussed releasing some this year.

Re: looks

I am not quite sure why a very cursory review like the one in the topic becomes Front Page when there is a far more detailed and professional review on this unit done 6 months ago here:

Mostly because fact checking and research are not a priority here. Google hits & mindless commentary (see above) are.

And yet, both you and I keep coming back. Funny that.

Re: looks

Oh I never actually leave. That would give a couple middle-management people here who hate me way too much satisfaction...

I've used it...

I own version 1 of this router.

It has worked flawlessly for the entire time I have owned it. I have had it running nonstop since May (I think that's when I bought it?). The range is incredible, and my wife's laptop with an SRX card shows file transfers at near LAN speed.

Love it!

Always Linksys...

Why does it seem that it's always Linksys products in the news here?

That's only at Tiger Direct.

It's available at plenty of other places:

I keep asking the same thing.

There are a lot of other companies with reviews going down all the time, that don't get reported. Why does Linksys always get front page news?

They even have a special little icon with the shadow of a fighter jet under it.

The news from the other day was for a MIMO round up (multiple brands) and Belkin won, but they still used a Linksys image (of this same ugly product).

If you want pretty...

...AND you want MIMO, try the new Netgear device with the blue circle of lights, and no external antenna. I've no idea how it performs, though.

(Cursory Net search later) Hmm, it seems some people claim the Netgear unit isn't "true MIMO", whatever that means. They say it has good range, though.

Re: If you want pretty...

I bought mine for the range. My D-Link would not always let the machine in our upstairs bedroom connect. With the Linksys we connect right away. Heck I was even able to connect at my neighbors house to it with my standard G connection notebook.
