Around The Industry:
BT system failures hamper broadband competition:
UK telco juggernaut BT has suffered a series of software glitches that have made it harder for other telecoms operators to take control of its telephone lines and offer broadband services. This is just the latest in a series of setbacks to hit local-loop unbundling (LLU), which is meant to bring more competition to the telecoms sector in the last few years.
Feds fund VoIP tapping research:
The federal government is funding the development of a prototype surveillance tool by researchers who have discovered a novel way to trace Internet phone conversations. The NSF grant comes as federal police are fretting about criminals using VoIP to mask their communications. On Friday the FCC approved mandatory wiretapping requirements for some VoIP providers.
NZ ISPs band together against telecom monopoly:
A group of 22 New Zealand ISPs have banded together in order to press demands ranging from local-loop unbundling to lower pricing and faster wholesale broadband speeds. The target of the group is Telecom New Zealand, which provides the backbone and sets the wholesale rules for the ISPs as well as offering its own Internet service to end users.
Skype is leader on VoIP in North America:
Sandvine, an equipement maker specialising in broadband network, has released the results of survey showing that Skype is leading the VoIP provider pack in North America. With over 1,100 VoIP providers identified, Skype takes the lead and garners an astounding 35.8% of all VoIP calls in the US, and 46.2% when it comes to share of minutes.
Report shows broadband surging among SMBs:
Broadband's dramatic increased uptake in medium businesses was the most remarkable aspect of this year's Sensis e-business report, according to its author: "Last year 55% of medium businesses (20 to 200 employees) were still using dial-up. That number has dropped significantly this year to only 16%, so we can see a big shift in medium enterprise embracing broadband."
Aussie wireless competition gets new entrant:
Australia's wireless broadband competitive landscape is about to spike with BigPond finally confirming an August 25 launch. The network offers typical speeds of 300-600kbps when in a CDMA coverage area enabled for the 1xEV-DO standard.
Politicos call for broadband in the Bush:
The Queensland Nationals have again upped their demands over the sale of Telstra with calls for a massive cash injection from the government to improve Internet services in regional Australia. A Nationals MP aid an AU$2 billion fund would mean nothing without a new high-speed network to replace Telstra's existing copper one.
In-flight Wi-Fi rivals pitch phone plans:
Boeing's Connexion and Airbus' OnAir both announced partnerships with mobile phone specialists to pave the way for in-flight GSM and CDMA device usage. Connexion's partner is Qualcomm, using GSM and CDMA 2000 base-stations, which beam calls from the aircraft to the ground via satellite. OnAir said it was working with software partner TriaGnoSys and server maker Miltope on a similar, but GSM only, system.
Infrastructure in place, Munis start offering VoIP:
Telecomms start-up vCentrix said that of the some 2,000 munis in the U.S. that already provide some sort of public utility, about 400 are ripe for VoIP because they’ve already laid all the infrastructure. The founder and president of vCentrix said VoIP is simply the next migration of services, not only for munis, but also for other ILECs, CLECs, MSOs, and ISPs--all of them targeted by vCentrix.
Motorola Ventures invests in Intellon’s BPL:
Motorola is utilizing Intellon's HomePlug 1.0 INT5200 chipset as a key component of Powerline LV (low-voltage), an end-to-end BPL solution for the utility market. Motorola Ventures has also made an equity investment in Intellon.

SecurityBits:
Microsoft gives up on "Windows Genuine Advantage" piracy scan... for now:
A few weeks ago, MS announced "Windows Genuine Advantage", which would scan users' PCs to see if they had a genuine licence key before letting them have any updates. Within a few hours of WIG going into action hackers had torn it apart using a fairly simple hack. An MS spokesperson said that MS has now sent its designers back to the drawing board on WIG.
MS Patch Day includes (buggy) monster IE update:
The cumulative IE update headlines the August release of 6 security bulletins from MS to cover 8 vulnerabilities in Windows. Three of the 6 bulletins are rated critical. MS also confirmed that its critical IE patches had to be pulled after a hiccup caused some of the downloads from the Microsoft Download center to be corrupted. The patches posted on MS Update and Windows Update were not affected by the glitch and are installing properly.
Anti-MS goup aims to block the release of Vista:
A public interest lawyer who is also intending to run in the 2006 Illinois gubernatorial race announced his intentions to block MS from releasing Windows Vista. Andy Martin of The Committee to Fight Microsoft said he intends to ask MS for an unconditional warranty that Vista is free of bugs that could result in security vulnerabilities.
Netscape catches up to Firefox patches:
Netscape 8.0.3.3 includes all the fixes that have been made in the Firefox browser, according to the update's release notes. That means it has all patches through Firefox version 1.0.6, which was issued by the Mozilla Foundation last month.

Anti-MS goup aims to block the release of Vista

Wow. That's a trip... Unconditional warranty that says if the product has NO 'bugs' or security flaws.. I can't imagine ANY software developer, or any developer of any tangible item signing that one...

What an idiot this lawyer is. It is nice he likes a bug free product. The fact that it isn't possible doesn't seem to have occurred to him. But what the hey, he is a lawyer - proof that he can't think worth a damn.

Re: Anti-MS goup aims to block the release of Vista

Idiot isn't the word for it.

"Andy Martin" is a gadfly haunted by scandal--so much so that he changed his name from Anthony R. Martin-Trigona, the name he used when he ran for Senate from Illinois back around 1980, and before that when he was a widely despised landlord in Champaign-Urbana, IL.

Some folks think he's really just deranged. I, for one, am amused by his ability to gain media attention on a fairly consistent basis....

not possible for bug free

It may be possible for "no known bugs at the time of release", but yes, impossible to predict the future.

I think it's the "known bugs" that get on people's nerves that seem to take months or years or decades to fix.

Runnning as what, a member of the Luddite Party?

What a clown. By his guidelines, any and all software should be banned.
