137.2 miles, beating recent record of 125 miles
(old news - 10:21AM Saturday Aug 20 2005)
tags: wireless · hardware
A WISP named Microserv Computer Technologies, and a hardware vendor named Trango Broadband Wireless claim they've set a new wireless technology distance record of 137.2 miles. The two companies claim they achieved a FTP file transfer rate of 2.3 Mbps between two Idaho mountains. The previous record of 125 miles was set just a month ago at the Defcon Wi-Fi shootout.

Unamplified?

Without reading the 125 mile story again, wasn't the 125 mile link unamplified at the final test time? So if this new record uses amps, then we're not really talking apples and apples, right?

Just curious.

No amps were used. The record still stands.

They had to use an eyesore of a sat dish to do it.

I'll pass on this.
Was there a point to this post?

That dish is probably the satelite TV dish they scavanged from your back yard.

Re: 125 miles... but

Ok, no need to knock on people trying to push the distance on wifi... And EVERYTHING that's developed out there isn't meant just to get WiFi to your house, they could use 125 mile wifi as back haul, so have your main bandwidth in one location, and then use the large dish to bring access to a town 100 miles away without having to run a cable to the tower.

Exactly what I mas thinking, or they could use it for long distance business accounts.

Exactly - many communities could benefit from a reliable high bandwidth 100+ mile back-haul. I'm sure many wouldn't even mind a 30' dish to get the job done(no offense anyone).

Pointless

While fun and possibly educational, these long-distance records are useless. There's zero fade margin, so the first reasonably sized chunk of precipitation or for that matter, thermal inversion, that happens to get in the way, good-bye signal.

As it's been posted before, if they want to impress, get widespread deployment of secure and cheap wireless broadband to the masses. No one needs to see long-distance broadband microwave hops; it's been done by AT&T and/or Lenkurt since 1965.

Another knowledge less troll. This IS useful. They have to work on the technology, eventually it'll get better.

Stop talking out of your ass!

Re: Pointless

They do not have to work on the technology. The technology to spray microwave RF long distances has been widely used for half a century. It's been done using solid state technology for over thirty years. The telephone company routinely sprayed that kind of bandwidth long distances for decades. It's how long-distance telephone calls were routed before they planted all that fiber in the ground. And there were hundreds of calls utilizing the kind of bandwidth that produces megabit data throughput. What is to work on here? Been there, done that, the scientists already have the t-shirt and it was left in the mud at the first Woodstock.

Sending 802.11 100 miles is fun, but hardly useful. The technology, as I indicated in my previous post, needs to improve for point to multipoint distribution of data, not sending a single data connection hundreds of miles. We already have that. Go Google the concept of last mile and you'll understand.

Thanks for your input. Now go back to your self-flagellation.

Not A Record

There was no documentation in the press release/PR piece. It is merely a claim. Nothing is gained for them but bragging rights. The legitimate record holder documented every step of their endeavor.

I saw only three paragraphs in that press release... Nothing there proved anything at all...

nonstandard equipment

They used nonstandard equipment for this. The wi-fi distance record that was set at Defcon is still the official record because the equipment that they used was 802.11 compliant. The Trango gear is not 802.11 compliant. This is why the article states "wireless transmission". The wi-fi alliance gets upset if you say wi-fi and it's not.

We could do it on the cheap. All we need is some man hours to work the project. I bet between us all we have more than enough equipment laying around.
