30 Gig Webmail
With plans for 50 & 100?
Neowin and Slashdot point to 30gigs.com, a new free webmail service offering 30 gigs of storage. According to the company, "Our main goal is to increase our space even further, to 50 gigs, or maybe 100 as time goes on." Like GMail, the product beta currently requires an invite.

Site seems to be down...it doesn't look like these guys can handle a whole lot, much less giving out 30 gigs to each user.

Ahh, back up now. Must have just rebooted something.

AWESOME! It's already OFFLINE!

"Unable to connect to MySQL server: localhost : '': Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (11)"

This service is definately going into my NO category...

Even better...it's owned by:

Domain Name: 30GIGS.COM
Registrar: GO DADDY SOFTWARE, INC.
Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com

Great...just what we need...

Actually, it's not owned by Go Daddy. Go Daddy is the registrar, or who the domain was registered through. The real owner is Daniel Saltzman of Rancho Cucamonga, California.

I wouldn't trust 30gigs.com either...as people have already said, it has a short ToS. Even on the front page it says, "Notice: We collect personal information on this site."

Yeah...I'd really love to sign up!

30 gigs of e-mail space....

I am wondering if you can upload ZIPs and EXE files (to archive). If ANYONE has access to this site, please send me an invite, or IM me. I would really appreciate it...

They just want you to keep all your email instead of deleting it so that anyone can look at it and see what you did 5, 10, or 50 YEARS ago.

So go ahead, archive your life you've forgotten about.

This is a scam. You're not getting a 30 gigabyte mailbox, you're getting a 30 gigabyte "malibox", whatever that is.

Malibox eh, lol

Who in the hell needs 30GB of email space anyway? I'm using hardly any of my Yahoo! 1GB space and I've been saving more messages to try and fill it up.

Total 1510 messages 13.4MB

What's to take for a spin? It's an email address attached to the internet and a server only you have more room that you will ever need.

My business email account, for a period of 5 years, is still only at 600 mb.

Want a gmail invite? I have 50 of them.

100 gigs?

Thats a hellava lot of email and I wont be one to say that it wont be necessary someday but is it even remotely necessary today?

If your getting this much email, wouldn't it be better to download it and store it yourself on a hdd? Yeah, it costs money to do that but obviously at this point your a professional power user.

I agree with you. I have users who flat out refuse to save attachments and free up mail server space. My biggest account weights in at around 8gb. 100gb sounds like someone who never picks up after themselves.

between my gmail and yahoo accounts, I have about 10 gigs or so at my disposal, using probably 1% IF that. then there's my personal domain email accounts, which is limited to the 100+ gigs of free space on my hard drive. this is getting beyond stupid.

please, DONT invite me to this one.

Why the name?

If you plan on increasung your storage space "to 50 gigs, or may be even 100 as tme goes on", you should have thought a little more about not calling your site 30gigs. Seems a little limiting, no?

Good point, didn't think of that, however, according to a whois search, someone does own 50gigs.com and 100gigs.com, but it's not the same person who owns 30gigs.com. UK addresses in the 50 and 100 ones, USA in 30gigs.com

It prob. 2 good 2 be true

Really? you can store all your 30-100 gigs there and what bandwidth will support this? unlimited up/downloads? unlimited bandwidth, will it support my fios 15megabits all the time when I want to retrieve files?

Sound suspicious, it would have to come with some caveats and limits.... and fine-print

I concur. It's just a word game. There are still limits.

This is the latest flavor of "free services". Before it was more and more free web space... now it's email space. Same ol' dance, different tune. BTW, where are all those free web space companies now? Same place these free email companies will be in 6-12 months.

Sounds too good to be true. I have a nagging feeling that this is one of those we'll say we have 30Gig space but in reality we hope that the average will not be above 1Gig otherwise we're screwed.

FIOS

I imagine when something such as FIOS becomes mainstream, email that can handle large files will be gold. Of course, once one does it, they will all follow.

Some people just don't like learning FTP. They would rather email a file and be done with it. Hell, I am still trying to get my FTP working correctly, but that's another story.

All You can eat email

Same as all you can eat. You typically get two plates and you are done. Most will never use even 100 megs. Go ahead and offer a terabyte while you are at it. Good luck uploading that on a 256K connection.:p

That's 1 gig of mail.........

And 29 gigs of SPAM!

When you're tired of that, you can move up to 49GB spam or the meatier 99GB spam. Whichever you choose.

--You are currently using 2 MB (0%) of your 2650 MB.-- That's since April 1st. So it's of no use to me. I'll stick with Gmail.

lets think this out a bit.

ok unlike google they have a strick TOS.AUP.and other terms of agrement. now what if they were like oh lets read some emails, or better yet have access to your bank account because you whanted to switch email hosts. i for one would not pick this (30gigs) for a dam email host. just think if they got 1 mysql server (DOWN) just think about the problems they mighyt have down the road if they cant keep the service up :P

Hmm... this is intersting.

Take a look at the TOS. Its kinda small if you ask me:

Here is the "about us" page:
About 30gigs.com

30Gigs.com started off with the idea of creating a "All in one" site for the webmaster and avid computer users. Combining personal file storage, GD2 signatures and anonymous email all in one service, which would be free. Our main goal is to increase our space even further, to 50 gigs, or maybe 100 as time goes on. 30Gigs.com is still in a very heavy beta, and if you are a member, please help us to make it the best mail server there is. We will be offering a section for personal file storage (up to 30 gigs) and a GD2 signature maker to keep your email safe from spam robots. We also offer a unique feature, which allows you to send a email from any address you want. This is very usefull if you have multiple accounts linked to your 30Gigs.com account, and want to send a email from john@otherservice.com so you dont confuse the sender. Any further information can be addressed to support@30gigs.com.

Of course you can store 2.6 GB on Gmail. The thing is that Google oversells the disk space, so maybe 100 people are on that 2.6 GB of space. They know 99% of people don't need 2.6 GB of space, it is simply a selling point and if you REALLY need it is is THERE, but more than likely you won't ever need that much space and if you do, it will be gradual so they can have time to add more space.

New info on 30gigs.......

Development Blog

A note from the admin team: As many of you are well aware, 30Gigs.com has absolutely exploded with growth over the past 24 hours. Some of the lovely results were server downtime coupled with slow logins. Rest assured, 30gigs.com is here to stay. We thought that giving some backing on where everything currently stands would help some users to understand where we are going.

While 30gigs.com obviously offers 30 gigs of storage, that is just one of the many great features we plan on offering. We plan on branching off into a true "All in one" service, which will be invite only for the time being.

Whats coming real soon?
The status bar showing your quota
GD2 Geo targeting which will show you on a map where that email you just got came from.
Anonymous email, the ability to press "send as anonymous" instead of send.
Complete revamp of the inbox, including WYSIWYG editor, quick reply, and much much more.
FILE UPLOAD SYSTEM. This has been a real pain for us to work on, but its coming along nicely. Inside your inbox, you will have a link to a file upload center, where you can upload files and organize them with folders. There will be a 600 meg limit for uploaded files via this system.
30 Gigs notifier, which will sit in your system tray.
POP/IMAP access

Whats coming to 30gigs.com in regards to other ideas?

We plan on offering a plethora of services that will out gun anyone out there. (even the big dogs, like MSN and google)
We will begin working on a 30gigs.com user portal shortly, where you can import RSS feeds, view your email, Check the weather, and so much more.
30Gig web hosting. This will include 30 gigs of transfer and 30 gigs of space. Mysql and ftp access will be included
Who knows what else? 30Gigs marketplace? Dating? We want to create a "down to earth" site which has every feature you need.
Got a idea of what you would like? Send it in! bugs@30gigs.com

We are in the process of moving from our servers to the ev1servers.net data center, where we will be grabbing up 2 dedicated racks, with all the storage and bandwidth we could ask for.
A big issue with people is how we are paying for all of this. Well, thats simple. People have donated to the service. Up until this point, all funding for the site has come from friends and family. We are hoping to create a self sustaining service, which will take care of itself. We promise that we will NEVER end up like some mail services ( m@il.com ) for example. We strive on being as ad-free as possible.
30Gigs would like to thank all of our beta testers, and everyone who has sent in bugs. It will be the users that make this site. We will not end up as some lifeless drone of a website, where you simply create a account and thats it. You will have the opportunity to interact with the members, and we plan on making it happen as soon as we can get the coding done.

Warm regards,
The 30Gigs.com Team

Why would they want new ideas sent to an email mask clearly designed for bugs... bugs@30gigs.com for new ideas? Yeah, the sad part is, this site will probably get some decent traffic.
