Triple Play: Is it Always a Deal?
... or is it sometimes just a matter of convenience
(old news - 12:56PM Sunday Oct 16 2005)
tags: business · cable
Packages combining digital TV, internet, and telephone services, often dubbed as the "Triple Play", are becoming increasingly common among cable and telco companies. In a random comparison of two New Jersey cable providers, Cablevision's standard Triple Play package costs around $100.00 a month for the first year, while Patriot Media's Digital Freedom plan is listed at a 50% higher cost ($149.99 a month) for new customers and doesn't appear to be nearly as robust as Cablevision's offering. Are some of these triple play offers preying on the uneducated consumer by lulling them into purchasing all three services just to have them on one convenient bill? Let's hear from those that have signed up for one of these deals, who is your provider, what factor(s) was your choice based on ... and of course the price.

Triple Play can be good deal; but check prices

Before you sign up for any service, you should do some research on the alternatives. Triple Play can be a good deal if the discount is big enough. But 1st you have to check out the best deals you can get on the individual options from elsewhere.

But for some people convenience and the lack of time to investigate alternatives makes Triple Play a good deal even if it isn't the best price. Their free time has value and a little extra cost isn't worth it to them to spend hours investigating alternatives.

As for myself, I'm retired and have plenty of free time and I found I can get a better deal by choosing my communications options a la carte.

P.S.> the article should really be talking about Quadruple Play as mobile access starts becoming part of the all-in-one communications packages.

No doubt cablevisions triple play is a great deal for the money, but if quality of service is important I would highly reccomend Fios even if it costs more.

May be for the average consumer the Triple Play from CV is a good deal, but my line of thinking has been to never put all my eggs in one basket.

Vonage would be dependant on Fios, so I wouldn't exactly say you have a truly separate service.

Well, eventually, everything will depend on the pipe into youre home. I was saying it's a seperate service in the sense of if I had instead subscribed to CV's VoIP product, "Optimum Voice."

What VoIP product is not dependent upon the data connection to the home? Withe upload that Fios provides (I'm soon to go to the 5mibt upload speed), QoS is not even an issue here for the VoIP lines.

Do you subscribe to a triple play?

I have FTTH and I get basic telephone, digital TV w/DVR includes something like 35 premium movie channels, and 2.8Mbps up/down high speed internet. We pay about $160/month.

I do it mainly for the convenience of one bill. I've checked around and I would pay about the same or less if I went with Direct TV and Bellsouth DSL.

The extra upload is a perk, but if I had the cable option I would probably take it. The pings on my fiber internet are not always the greatest. The latency jumps around alot during peak times. Mainly due to the route the ISP uses to get us to the backbone.

But anyway that's my situation.

Qwest is my favorite....

Qwest has a deal DirecTV + DSL + Phone for $92.97/mo.

1 Problem...

Includes...
Internet Discount of $20.00 for first year only
Free modem for first year only $5.00/mo
Discount on Phone Package first year only $10.00

Enjoy your $35 a month increase in your second year!

Don't remember my last 37% price increase, that will be some nice sticker shock for the idiots!

I had someone try to sell me on this last night, I said SURE if I can have it forever!

And with most telco's, you are locked in the first year and afterwards you can cancel w/o penalty. The telco's have setup retention desk to continue the offers not to lose you, b/c you could cancel today and sign up again tomorrow with better discounts.

What do you mean Home Phone discount $10.00 for first year only. I got Qwest Home Phone ($29.99), Qwest Choice DSL ($19.99 first year) and DirecTV ($41.99). Then I get $5.00 off for having Home Phone and Qwest DSL and another $5.00 for having Home Phone and DirecTV. It's my understanding that those bundled discounts are perm.

None?

I dont even have a triple play available. (i have cable internet and tv bundled) For those with cable cos offering phone service, how reliable is it, and do they do it as well as a traditional phone company? Cox is what i have here, and i know they have phone service elsewhere. I guess its just a matter of time before we get that too....

Digital phone is just as reliable and in my opinion MUCH better than classic POTS. The days of static in the lines has gone, turn around on orders is faster, often immediate if you want to add a feature, and the price is generally cheaper - at least in my area. When the power goes off, we still have service since our system is powered by the network.

Many areas that offer digital phone are required by regulators to offer a system with 99.99% uptime which in turn makes the cable TV and internet that much more reliable as well.

Usually if something goes wrong, it's with the RSU equipment on the outside of the house - they can go bad from time to time, or the inside wiring.

Not a triple play fan but...

...if you can get a real deal (and I'm not talking about time limited promotions) go for it. What's the point in switching because you're going to get a 1 year discount and after that you'll have to look for another service provider because your current price will be too high?

I'll Buy the Whole Enchilada!

I'm currently paying $62/mo for a POTS line with unlimited long distance plus $130/mo for 128k ISDN. No Satellite TV or cable.

If somebody offered me broadband access, voice, and digital TV for $150/mo, I would jump on it in a hot second!

Damn dude, your getting raked over the coals. Maybe you should get a cell for long distance? I make ever LD call on mine. And $130 for 128k? I think I'd do dial-up for $9.95 until something better came along. Hell, Id send you this AOL cd that came in the mail with 50 free days. All Im going to use it for is a beer coaster..

Hahaha two teenage kids with friends that are all long distance (if I call my own zipcode, it's long distance). $60 for unlimited is cheap. Cells don't work here.

I need decent bandwidth due to babysitting servers remotely, I tried it on dialup and there's no way. Satellite is useless due to the latency.

TV is from an OTA antenna (get a few HD channels), but like I said, if I could get voice, video and data via brodband for $150, I would be livin' large....:D

The tax and fee side of the equation

When you look at triple play pricing check into how the individual services would be taxed separately

For example, digital voice from a cable company may get additional subscriber fees and taxes where the same digital voice from - lets say Vonage - would carry almost no additional taxes and fees

Re: The tax and fee side of the equation

I could do that with Cox and funny as it sounds without the LD, the math makes Cox the winner.

4.0/512 Modem $49.00 - $10.00 Bundle Discount $39.99
Basic Cable $40.00
Cox with CallerID, Call Wait, VM Bundle (IA) $21.39 - $10.00 Triple Play = $11.39 (They take the $10 off the phone portion)

Telecomm Taxes (Iowa 17% Avg.) $1.93

Your phone bill equals $13.32

Ok now I am wondering why I am messing with Callvantage!

Re: time warer cable

I like triple play but don’t practice what I preach.

Video= DirecTV, Two Receivers, Total Choice Plus w/Locals, HBO, TiVo ($68)
Voice= Verizon, Landline
Data= Time Warner, Road Runner Premium ($85)

My problem with triple play is no matter how you slice it, when you add in the phone part, it’s not worth it of me. We hardily ever use the phone and were on the pay per call plan. This month’s phone bill was high due to a 13 minute local long distance call I had with my second cousin on a computer related problem who lives in a different county. This month’s phone bill was a whopping $17.53, 37 total calls made. Oh by the way, that includes the $6.95 for Caller ID service. Usually our bill is sub $15.

Nice thing is with Road Runner there is no tax at all, and with DirecTV the only tax I pay is 21 cents on the $5 TiVo fee because it’s not a programming related change. I would never go VOIP in a million years, if I absolutely had to I’d go Time Warner Digital Phone, due to no 911 issues, battery back up and security system compatibility.

Cablevision Triple Play

When I moved to Ronkonkoma, NY last year I investigated which phone/video/internet packages would be the least expensive. I chose Cablevision over Verizon because the phone/internet cost was less with Cablevision. Verizon Fios was not and is still not available here, so that was not an option. Also, because I live in an apartment I need permission from landlord to mount a satellite dish, so Cable TV was just that much less of hassle. With one phone call and one appointment I had video, phone and internet service installed and so far I have never needed further service or call to customer service. I don't know how much my bill will go up when my year of service is up. I probably will keep OOL and Cablevision and go with another VoIP provider for phone. When (or if) Verizon Fios is available, I may switch internet providers if costs are comparable to OOL.

Re: Cablevision Triple Play

If you don't add additional services, your bill should go up $15. If you whine long and hard enough, there's a good chance they'll waive the increase.

mindgarde

@cgocable.net

worth it ?

I wouldn't mind giving one company 100 a month for all 3 services but I'll split it up between companies before I'll give any one company more than 100 a month. Cogeco want and extra 45 for voip on top of the 105 i'm paying for digi cable and inet. In my opinion that is way too much money and I won't spend it ... I'll keep my phone with bell.

The real HIDDEN costs?

When I look at Optimum Online's Triple Play package, it tells you how economical it is supposed to be and shows you an introductory price. What isn't clear, at least to me is what will the monthly cost be when the "lure in" special pricing is over.

If THAT price is competitive to what I have now, then it is worth it and the promotional rebates are like the icing on the cake.

Cablevision seems to obscure what the "regular" price will be. (Unless I missed something or some information was posted).

Re: The real HIDDEN costs?

I have Cablevision's Triple Play without the special deal. I pay $133.99 per month which breaks down like this:

TV - Io digital family cable with two Io boxes = $74.09 (with $3.96 in taxes);
Optimum Online= (with $5.00 discount for cable tv subscribers) = $44.95;
Optimum Voice = $34.95

That totals $153.99

And there's a $20.00 discount for all three which nets out to $133.99

The extra digital cable box cost $6.45 extra (plus
tax), so the service with just one tv would be roughly $127.54

Thanks for a meaningful breakdown.

It really irks me that Cablevision will not clearly indicate the cost of the triple play (and specific cost breakdown of services) upfront.

Re: The real HIDDEN costs?

I'm not really concerned with "hidden costs", I gauge it by my bottom line cost. For years I had CV for TV and broadband and Verizon phone service. I got tired of paying Verizon over $60 a month and decided to try something else. I looked at Optimum Voice but I thought the $35 price they advertise was too much, especially when I could get a VOIP service from a company named Sunrocket for less than $17.
What I discovered is that phone service is kind of like air. We don't notice how much we use it until we don't have it. Sunrocket was a horror. It didn't work worth a darn. I never knew if I would have a dial tone when I picked up the phone. Incoming calls were sent off into the ethernet. When I gave people my phone number, I had to give them my home AND cell phone number because Sunrocket was out so often. The money I was saving was going to pay my cell phone bill. After almost three months of frustration I went back to Verizon and begged them to take me back. They agreed but wound up giving me the run around with long delays and missed appointments. After missing two appointments without explanation, they actually had the gall to tell me that I should call them the day before my next appointment to make sure they were coming.
On a lark, I called CV(from a cell phone, naturally) to see if they could do it any faster. The CSR said sure, we can do it right now. Since I've had their other two services for years, I knew I wasn't elligible for their Triple Play, so I asked how much it was going to add to my bill. The CSR told me it would be $15. I was stunned and asked if it was some type of special promotion. I was told no, that was their regular price. I signed up immediately and had phone service in 10 minutes. All I had to do was plug my phone into my current cable modem and make a call to a tech to finalize the set-up. For the life of me I can't understand why CV doesn't tell current subscribers that for them, the actual cost of Optimum Voice is $15.
I've had the service for 3 months and it's been flawless. If I had known the true, bottom line cost, I would have taken the plunge a long time ago and I never would have bothered with Sunrocket.
For reasons I'm sure most CV customers familiar with, I have a deeply ingrained dislike of CV and in particular, the Dolan family. I would love to try FIOS when it becomes available if for no other reason than to stick it to the Dolans. The only problem is that Optimum Voice is so good and so cheap (with the $20 discount and compared to Verizon POTS) that it's going to be difficult to make the switch. Unless CV has a substantial price increase, FIOS is going to have to come up with a spectacular deal to get me to do it.

Comcast Pick Three

Ok, This seems expensive at first but, in reality it's not that bad actually.

I had the 3 month $33.95 for each deal, Phone ("Unlimited Long Distance"), Digital Plus Cable, and 6Mbps Internet, which was SWEET at that price.

It took some talking to a customer service rep, because I wanted the Comcast "Pick Three" deal but at first they said NO, because there was no package that included ("Unlimited Long Distance".
Now I pay ("With Taxes and all charges")

Internet & Digital Cable $110.23
Phone ("Unlimited Long Dist $60.62
Total $170.85

Anyone got any better deals? not including New Customer Discounts?
