Free Google-Fi won't work, thoughts on muni-Fi
(old news - 10:14AM Wednesday Oct 19 2005)
tags: competition · business
We recently discussed how Earthlink was being forced to explore technologies that could allow it to bypass the incumbents (Wimax, Muni-broadband, BPL). CNET interviews EarthLink CEO Garry Betty, who opines on the challenges the ISP faces in staying competitive, and even comments on Google's free Wi-Fi plans: "Free sounds great, doesn't it? But you just can't run a network, roll trucks and provide customer support and all the other back-end services for free. Every other ad revenue model for providing (free) service has failed in the past."

I have one comment

Google .. That's all there is to it. They've run an ad based business for years and are going to take over the world!

Re: when will they DIE?

Well, I don't want them to die (lol), we share the same view.

Earthlink has nothing. Nothing, nothing, nothing. They have interconnects to other networks, but that means nothing unless the only thing you sell is interconnect service.

They sell to end users. The only way to get to end users is for them to use other carriers, which isn't bad, but they have nothing to offer beyond that.

Google has their network (vast mind you), their own ability to reach end users, an income from service usage, and other services that people want to use beyond Inet access. Google is providing the "roadway" to get the content they provide...not simply the roadway that comes a dime a dozen.

good job earthlink

thanks for protecting your shareholders and making money...

google might be breaking some laws, i don't know the specifics, but isn't it illegal for a company to lower prices so low (and take a loss) in order to break the competition? Illegal use of power or something? it's a stretch.... and I don't know for sure, so i'd like some feedback

Wi-Fi uses unlicensed spectrum, so Google can do what they want as long as they have permission to install the Wi-FI equipment. Plus offering a free service is not illegal. Who said Google is taking a loss. The Wi-Fi service could be used to deliver location specific services which are paid for by advertising. Go to law school first and then come back with a valid legal argument.

Re: good job earthlink

adkinsjm,
please go back to 5th grade ask to be taught reading comprehension and/or read the entire post before you decide to rip somebody in a forum when they say they aren't sure...

quoting myself ".... and I don't know for sure, so i'd like some feedback"

feedback != going back to law school, anyway, if Earthlink wants to sue, they must be doing so on some grounds, that is what I was asking, not stating in my post

anyway... know why/how/what Earthlink could sue over?

Earthlink is an ISP provider. Have a nice day everyone. That means they help people get online.

And they help people avoid the $10 or $15 no video penalties when getting earthlink over cable lines.

As much as I think google is overhyped... At least they have a P/E ratio (99% of the dot coms never were profitable). In other words, they are a viable company, not a concept that is bleeding $ while it figures out if it is viable. Ridiculous P/E ratios do not necessarily mean a bad investment.

No.

It would be illegal for a monopoly to do this. Google, unlike, say, Ma Bell in the '50s, has competition - Ma Bell, as a monopoly, was highly regulated. It would also be illegal - anti-trust - for a number of companies to conspire to charge less than their competition to drive the competition to bankruptcy.

Google can do this in a free-market economy.
