First 'over-the-air' music downloads too
(old news - 11:47AM Sunday Oct 30 2005)
tags: wireless
Sprint Nextel, the newly merged cell phone company, has planned a series of major announcements for Monday morning. The word is that they will announce a full-scale launch of their EV-DO high-speed wireless network, a service dubbed "Power Vision," which will include the first over-the-air music download store in the United States. In advance of the announcement, Sprint Nextel distributed review units of a new Samsung cell phone equipped with EV-DO, it featured a menu icon for music that leads to a service named Sprint Music Store which offers downloads for $2.50 per song. The purchase entitles a user to download a copy of the same song to a computer as well.

I've been waiting..

I've been waiting for Sprint to launch their Ev-DO network and phones... Unfortunately if I were to upgrade to an Ev-DO handset then I will probably loose my grandfathered goods... mainly my free unlimited text what I get for free now... I'd be charged $15/mo!

Re: I've been waiting..

WTF in their right mind is going to buy a song for 2.50 that's 1/4 the price of the average cd. Just get a iTunes account.

2.50 is NOT 1/4 the price of a cd! lol average cd last time I checked is like 14-18 dollars or about 16 dollars. thats over 6 2.50 dollar songs. Plus on one cd you get a bunch of songs you might not even listen to.

Re: I've been waiting..

Well here in Canada I pay on average 12.99 for a Day 1 CD. That works out roughly 10 bucks USD, so in theory he's correct.

The music service will flop...

Who do they think they're kidding with songs at $2.50! What a joke. I guess now we know which company the music industry will show love to the most .

Re: The music service will flop...

You can still get grandfatherd goodies. I got unlimited Text accros four lines for $7.50 total. That is half the price that it normally is on one line.

As for the music store, the price is ridiculous, but I guarantee you people will pay for it. Most cell phone useres have no idea how to do these types of things on their own.

Sweet! For $2.50 I get:
A digital copy of a song is some shitty sounding compression format that is probably proprietary. Even if it's MP3 it's still a joke for $2.50.

But look at the bright side! You can complain, moan and bitch about it all day long for free! and retain the right to NOT purchase it.

You guys, as usual, have this entitlement thing about you where you think that everything ever released will or should be priced the way you want it or have the expectation that it should.

Look, if you don't like it, don't buy it. There are people out there that will think this is the next best thing to sliced bread and have to have it at any price. May not be a whole lot, but some will certainly buy it.

Since many people here believe in p2p music sharing in the first place, why is anyone complaining about $2.50.

People are paying $2 right now for mere RINGERS. There will certainly be many people paying $2.50 for full songs. Furthermore, all accounts with Vision get a free $5 credit toward downloads, so people are free to try out 2 a month without any additional costs.

Since I sell Sprint phones, I fortunately get unlimited downloads. Mwahahaha.

Yes, plenty of people make use of those...but truthfully, the volume on them tends to be inferior compared to the ringers that can be purchased directly from Sprint. There's also more serious quality issues with them sometimes. But yes, that's a good alternative.

People will pay

The thing the Sprint and the other carriers have proven is that people will pay this much for a download - look at their current prices for wallpapers, ringtones, games and more. While someone that is heavily into downloading MP3s will know where to go to get low cost content, there are some people that are all about ease of use and might only want to download a few songs into their phone to use as ringtones. As long as there are people that are willing to pay, I have a feeling these prices are here to stay.

I personally can't wait for EVDO for other reasons. I replaced my PPC 6600 with the 6700 because of the higher speeds that EVDO offers. I have used Verizon's EVDO network and the data speeds are very impressive. Hopefully I will see that 'E' replace the 1x on my display soon.

Anyone on Sprint know if the Treo 650 is EVDO compatible?

Shaner - I regret to tell you the the Treo 650 is not EVDO compatible. The Treo 700 will be, but Sprint will not get that for a little while and if you are partial to the Palm OS you might not like it since it uses WM 5.0

The reason I asked is because we just started to sell the 650 for Bell Mobility here in Canada last week and the Treo rep told me that there was a ROM upgrade coming to make it EVDO compatible in January. I don't know how true that is since the chipset in it is 1x only not EVDO.

Hmmm, what do you think of the 6700? Is it too thick, screen too small and is the keyboard easy to use? Is it definately an improvement over the 6600? I do like that it includes Win Mobile 2005!

Thanks!!

Re: People will pay

I have enjoyed my 6700 for the last 2 weeks I have had it. There are some sync glitches with ActiveSync 4.0 - but then again there have been glitches with Activesync for as long as I can remember. I like the WiFi, bluetooth is more stable then it was with my 6600, the 1.3 MP camera is a nice toy to play with. The 6700 is about the same size and thickness as the Treoo 600/650. I have placed them side by side and see very little difference. The screen, while smaller then the 6600 is functional and easy to use/read. The keyboard is excellent. All in all it is one of the better PDA phones I have owned. Hope that helps you.

The 6600 and 6601 are both ev-do capable. All U have to do is be a business customer and request the ev-do service be added. An over-the-air software update will be done and bam U're set to go

Re: People will pay

See that is the strange thing. Yes, the units have the EVDO chipset/radio in them. Verizon's versions of these phones already have the software support the handle EVDO - however getting Sprint to upgrade the 6600 has been a strange thing. I spoke to a few different level 2 vision reps and I was informed that while they can upgarde the software of the 6600 they could not upgrade my 6601. Go figure. After going around and around, they replaced my 6601 with the 6700. I am not the only person they have done thise with. If there was a software upgrade - why would they have replaced the entire unit at no cost? And yes I am a business customer.

Re: People will pay

Yeah, that is strange. We carry the 6600 too, and we've been told that we're not going to upgrade it EVDO, but bring out the 6700 instead.

I agree, wouldn't it be cheaper overall for a software upgrade rather than upgrade entire units?

They're already buying $2 ringers. And each customer who has Vision gets a $5 credit monthly toward downloads. Build your collection 2 songs at a time.

Re: People WILL NOT pay

Thank you. As I stated - the carriers (not just Sprint) are already pricing ringtones at $ 2.00 and people ARE buying them. People will pay $ 2.50 for MP3s. Just because people like us know better - there are MANY more people out there that do not, and like anything they will pay for the ease of use.

Of couse people will pay. There are too many people out there who dont want to go through the hassle of hacking their phones to load whatever they want on it. $2.50 is a small price to pay to have your fav song on your phone.

There is nothing wrong for charging what you want for a song. There are sooooo many other choices to download for cheaper that you just can take your money elsewhere. Whats the big deal? If sprint wants to charge that much then let them.

@comcast.net

Stupidity is rampid

A cell phone is a phone is a phone. Need I repeat it anymore? The gullible folks who pay these idiotic prices to hear a song, a song no less on their cell. Get a life. Why must you have such childish things? Is it so important to have your cell ring to some ignorant rap tune or teenie booper music. People grow up, you are adults, I think, start acting like mature adults. My cell rings, ringgggggggg, I answer, I finish conversation and hang-up. Oh by the way, I don't feel the need to yell into my cell and annoy everyone around me. Didn't yo mama teach you any manners? Nuff said

EV-DO is nice

Ev-do is pretty nice. I've had it for about 2-3 months, the speeds are pretty good around 1/2mb. The biggest problem is the price, it's way to expensive (I get if for free from work). I think it's $60-80 a month, I'd have a hard time justifying that price for its usefullness. I've rarely used it because i have broadband @ home, although it has come in usefull once or twice.
