A blog, msx exposed, created to document any shady dealings by a game "cheat" service called MSX, (MSX sells memberships and access to cheat software for Battlefield 2 Online). The blog is raising an alarm over the "30 free gigs" webmail service, 30gigs.com, an extremely poor service unfortunately mentioned here (and slashdot) when launched. The service 30gigs.com is owned and run by one Daniel Saltman, who also distributes the cheat software already under fire for containing possible trojans. The risk of continuing to use 30gigs.com to receive or send confidential email should be obvious.

30gb yea right... everyone thought that when google came round with 1gb email that it was a joke. How 30gb can be possible I dunno, with the company at least with a company that is not heard of, or has a bad presentation of itself already.

It is the uninformed user that may not be tech savvy enough to understand the issues.

What if people use this service or any other for legitimate reasons that don't include game cheats? Do you think that innocent people still deserve to have bad things happen to them? I certainly don't. But then again, I have just completed several classes on ethics and philosophy.

Anyway, can anyone tell me why the "people who are uninformed about computers deserve negative consequences of their ignorant acts" idea is so prevalent in the help-desk industry (via these forums)? I don't see this attitude in other professions (e.g., doctors, lawyers). Why the bitterness?

I see it all to much here kind of worries me about the state of the world.

I think it stems to most it workers being the "geeks" and being abused in school. They finally have something they can hold over the "jocks" and popular peoples heads.

I mean really can we all expect every one using a computer to know how to reinstall their network stack if it breaks ? I don't understand all the bitterness either.

not really, i doubt that anything of that sort will lead to death/dispair in my family. not worth worrying about. i dont think that anyone who isnt computer/internet "savvy" will find any need for 30 gigs of email space. nor do my folks play BF2. sooo, i think im in the clear.

Actually, you can get encryption technology that would make use of any pop3 or imap email system secure (even 30gigs.com if they offer pop3 access).

The catch is that you need to trade security certificates with every person you email. Furthermore, you need to use a desktop based email program (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) to handle the encryption/decryption of the messages.

That's not the only problem. If this is your primary/only account, how do you get your bank, web host, cc company, paypal, etc to send you encrypted mail? You can't and are therefore left completely exposed where it counts the most.

If you are into WebMail, you can use HUSHMAIL (»www.hushmail.com/). All that is needed is for both you and your recipient to have Free Hushmail accounts. You connect to their Web Mail servers to send/receive messages. They also allow you to send/receive encrypted message to/from non-Hushmail addresses. They are based on PGP PKI encryption so you need PGP to use a MUA as opposed to a Web Browser (the Web Interface handles the encryption/decryption for your Hushmail Web Mail Account).

Bottom line

It should be obvious that the only way to send "confidential" e mail is by encrypting it wit a decent encryption program (or, by plain old snail mail). Since most e mail is spam or BS anyway, why worry about it? The guy has been exposednow, so, time to move on....

Interesting - I used the blog to post my own positive comment towards MSX security and the admin removed it. He only seems to leave the uneducated pro-msx responses on the blog. Remember, there is always 2 sides to every story. Try it, post a pro-MSX message and watch it vanish... Talk about spin.

I think you summed that up pretty nicely - "the uneducated pro-msx response's"

And the big deal is nobody likes a cheater and esp. playing a multiplayer game with one! Your response sounds like a typical cheater mindset, but then again why would you have a pro-msx comment unless you weren't?

I just like giving the benefit of the doubt. I have cheated at games before (up+up+down+down+left+right+left+right+a+b+select+start) remember that one? Anyways, I don't do a lot of gaming, so maybe I am just missing the point. To accuse people of hacking systems is serious. If he has the "code" as he has stated, why not post it to let others look at it. Apparently it hasn't been flagged by any security company. Just playing devil's advocate

The vulnerability exists in »www.30gigs.com/getpassword/ page due to
lack of validation of user submitted data.
Proof of Concept:
enter »www.30gigs.com/getpassword/
and copy & paster this code in the Login field, finally submit the form.

I too have an account here for a few months now. I don't use it much, just needed to see how it worked out. Somone actually poted somewhere on the internet, that it's not really 30GB service, that it is really a 1GB box. That's why there is no usage meter on the site.

The problem here is that someone involvled in the shady world of selling cheats for online games is not someone I would trust. Guys like him cost real companies $$ and hurt honest players. EA has to spend cash to keep their game playable for the average user. Cheats kill games and cost sales. He also has cheats for the game Americas Army, a game made by the US Army. They have to deal with this nonsense too. Like I said, its a shady business.
He bundles adware into his "free" cheat downloads too. Those he just takes from places where you can get the files for free and clean, adds his adware crap and puts them on his site.
Plenty shady. Not an email Id be inclinded too use, in fact there is nothing "legit" from him that I would use.

I am pissed at 30gigs because all my mail has been erased! I checked my mail box yesterday and there was over 400 mails in one account and over 200 mails in the other account. And this morning when I checked my mailbox, it was all gone with only 6 mails in one account and 4 mails in the other account. Basically, all the mails I had received yesterday and earlier are all gone without any warning or notice.
Second, if you are typing a really long message to a friend using 30gigs.com, when you press send, your mail will not be sent. Instead, you are sent back to the login page because the session has timed out. So after you log in, then you realize that not only have you lost your really long message but it hasn't been sent either! This has been very frustrating.
Third, there is no meter to tell you how much space you have left.
Fourth, there is no customer service or someone you can contact via email to tell them of your problems!
The only reason why I had used 30gigs.com was to store mail. Now that I have lost all my mail, I don't think I will continue to use such an unreliable mailing system.
