Unveils trial for content on the go
(old news - 09:51AM Monday Nov 21 2005)
tags: Video · software
Reuters brings word that Tivo is testing a new feature that will bring video content to both the Apple iPod, and the Sony PSP. The service could be available to Tivo Series2 subscribers as early as the first quarter of next year. Much like their broadband film trial we mentioned last week, it won't be available to DirecTV Tivo owners.

Yup, it sucks...

However, in terms of the DVR, Directivo is the best out there. Especially when you compare them to the Comcast DVR and Dish DVR. Course, the Dish DVR is getting better with each new release.

Personally, I will stick with the neutered DirecTivo than go with a standalone Tivo or the Comcast DVR. Just my opinion.

Yeah, hard to beat getting the bits from the satellite direct to hard drive.

And you can somewhat "un-neuter" it if you want.

Re: Shafted

Yeah if you have the non R10 units then you can enable full functionality.. I have one HDVR2 but also a R10.. so MRV is out of the window.

I loved upgrading my drive to 216 hours of recording time on my Directivo.

Now this could be cool. Does this software exist to do our own shows for the ipod?

They need to keep their word to Mac Users before going down this path. If TiVo are working so hard on TiVo2Go for Macs why is it they can come out with something like this that even less users are going to care about? Especially since it's already been done for ages without their help. Work on what needs to be done, not what's already done.

Doomed

The files will be watermarked and traceable to originating computers to discourages piracy.
More DRM. More punishing of legitimate customers. Stupid stupid stupid.

Thousands of people can already extract video from their Tivos and other devices and put them on portables. DRM sucking ()*q#$&().

Yes, I know watermarking's not really DRM. It doesn't matter. You give a copy of Oprah to your friend and they stick it on BitTorrent -- now you're targeted by Harpo Inc. Fooey to it all. Chilling chilling effects.

Re: Doomed

Err, actually no.

I'm against any DRM but this one sounds like a legitim one: it wouldn't limit my rights, I could transfer between my units endlessly, it would only show when I share it with the public.

This sounds like a fair deal to me.

uh oh!

Disney/ABC isn't going to like this - could cut into their 99 cent downloads of "Lost" and other shows.

Re: uh oh!

Eventually they'll just flag all shows with a "Do Not Record" flag, and none of it will be transferable to the portable device, anyway.

Re: uh oh!

Yawn... MythTV has had this functionality since a few days after Video iPod was released and with NO DRM. IMHO, few consumers products can compete with open source. They just have too limited innovation.

TiVos digital plan threatens new showdown

»news.ft.com/cms/s/0be98988-5aae-···340.html
TiVo’s plan to allow customers to transfer television programmes to Apple’s video iPod threatens to create a new showdown between the company and television networks and studios, who are intent on controlling their content as it migrates to digital platforms.

Some lawyers and media analysts on Monday predicted that the networks would take legal action to block TiVo’s efforts, although none had yet publicly commented on their plans.

“I’d be very surprised if TiVo doesn’t get a ‘cease-and-desist’ letter from the intellectual property owners,” said Tom Selz, founding partner of Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz, a law firm that specialises in media issues.
The lawsuits will be coming shortly, and TIVO's stock will go back down.
