Movies on a phone definitely make no sense. News clips like CNN on a phone can be nice at times though. Dont know why they waste their time. The MP3 playing capabilities of my Sanyo MM-5600 is one of the things I don't know if I can do without now. I hate carrying multiple devices around and its just real convenient to just plug in my headphones in my phone and listen to music while I work.
PDA phones are way too bulky to carry and typing on either the numeric pad or a tiny keyboard sucks (I've tried).
I do agree that movies on my cell phone is probably a bad idea. I do have Sprint's live television service but I cannot watch it for more than a few minutes. I usually turn it on to get the current news or weather... or if I'm stuck somewhere and have nothing to do I can watch Discovery or something.

Sprint found that many people have a shorter attention span when it comes to mobile phone video, a Sprint spokeswoman said. Allowing for that, the service lets viewers watch movies in segments, similar to a DVD.
So I think most people would end up watchting small chunks at a time (which I would find annoying). I would find it hard to sit for 90 minutes watching a movie on a tiny screen (assuming the battery held up).

What's the point of only watching a piece before your phone's battery dies?
AT this Time this service is useless.. Maybe if they offer news or weather an 30 60 seconds clips.

| Media Offerings There's a program called orb which does this for free, you can stream your mp3 and video collection straight to your phone. It's awesome. You can even stream live TV to your phone if you have a TV tuner in your machine.
Also it does make sense to have an mp3 phone. All I have to do is plug in a pair of headphones, and I have a mp3 player. In fact, I have better than an mp3 player because I can also stream mp3s or Sirius radio into my phone. Coming soon, shoutcast.
Try that on a Verizon phone. Oh, no, sorry. Verizon locked their phones down hard.

| One small step for Sprint.... One giant leap for Technology.
Yeah, it sounds worthless. Pay $7 a month for crapy movies (as far as what was listed in the article). And on a tiny screen?
But, it's just a small step towards reaching that magical goal of having one device do it all: phone, PDA, mp3 player, video player, camera, photo album all in one. We can't get there from here without taking small increments that, on there own, look worthless but taken as part of a larger whole are a necessary step.

I don't have Nextel but am considering getting it. I can see many uses for that walkie-talkie feature. It's great for a couple to stay in touch while separated (at a large store, on our 2.5 acre property, if I'm away on a trip). I would also like to have them at work. We currently all carry bulky Motorola radios and these Nextel phones would be a perfect replacement and the walkie-talkie feature would be an inexpensive substitute. Sorry for the OT comment.

| Small, mobile VTC Maybe they should take a walkie-talkie camera phone, point the lens towards the user, include their video service, and turn it into a mobile VTC solution;) Something tells me that people (business and personal) would pay dearly for a service like that. | |

| Re: Small, mobile VTC Well, that whole video conferencing thing is coming in the form of Qchat from qualcomm when Sprint rolls out Ev-DO Rev. A next year
Also, with this, I tried it on my Ev-DO powered phone and found it to be fairly decent. The movies/shows are split up into chapters a la DVDs. If I had a larger screen, it'd probably be a bit bigger. Although it is $6.95/mo., I get a $5 monthly service credit and it only cost me $1.95/mo. on top of a 15% discount, so in all actualality, it is $1.67/mo. + $0.14 for tax which is $1.81 a month. Not bad in my opinion... I'll probably see how this works out for this month and next.
Plus, this is a library of unlimited streaming video... and unlimited isn't too bad

1 edit | Not Signing Up. I'll pass. I had Sprint TV for a free two month trial, but cancelled soon after that. The novelty wears off quick, you can't get a very good picture quality on the tiny screen, along with choppy audio and picture, especially if the signal is weak. If it's too bright, you can't see the screen, or if it isn't quiet, you can't hear. What's the point of showing full-length films on a cell phone? The battery would run down long before the end of the movie. I'll wait until I get home to watch it on HDTV.

The video is fine on mine (it is 15fps), audio is clear and usually too loud on my phone (have to turn it almost all the way down). Don't know about being too bright.. that must be due to your phone's LCD screen not the service.

| Already available free Sprint customers with multimedia capable phones can already watch full length movies free on zoovision.com. Granted, only a few old films are available so far, but it shows what can be done. To all the nay sayers who question the quality, I assure you, it looks great, especially on an EVDO capable handset. | |
