After trimming next-gen deployment

BellSouth has announced that the company is eliminating some 1,500 management jobs to help it "better position itself to compete in the broadband market." As we mentioned recently, the company also scaled back its next-gen broadband deployments, planning to get fiber within 5000 feet of 50% of its customers by 2007 (down from 75%).

Wow it's nice to see someone thinks about me when Bellsouth stories roll around.

I honestly think everything i've said in the past is the truth about Bellsouth. The execs at Bellsouth are only out to make $$ and have no interest in improving the network outside of "just getting by" to keep customers from jumping ship.

I've thought long and hard about it. I'd love to have a sit down talk with one of these Bellsouth executives over a nice cup of coffee. Though I doubt talking to them would do much good, the only way to get these people to listen is to voice your opinion with your pocket book.

Before you know it, Bellsouth users will be tiered in too two groups of users with broadband. The first tier will have fast access to internet sites surfing at 6 megs with the quickest routing tables direct to host. The second group will be sitting around with 6 meg connections, but routing traffic through China to get to a local webserver. Why? Because the second group didn't pay extra $$ to access premium internet, even though broadband is supposed to be premium.

When does the greed end?

I hope Mizzat See Profile didn't get the axe in this round of job cuts...

But what we all need to think about is the global economy. We cannot afford to fall behind in terms of internet innovation. If our internet becomes inaccessible our productivity will suffer, and thats really all we got against the 100lb gorilla that is China/India. Duane Ackerman needs to think about that, while he lines his pockets he may empty his children's.

I retired BellSo after 32 yrs in 2001 and was talking today with an old buddy still there, about how it is only the old-timers that do give a damn about the company and how we were brought up on service first. Now the new kids don't plan on staying long ,the company only wants the fast buck.
This all started about 10-15 when Bell like a lot of company's became a 'TEAM' instead of a 'Family',they actually said one time that if you can't hit a home run we don't need you.
This was brought about when the big company started to promote higher management from the suit crowd fresh out of college instead of up from the ranks. At the Big three or ten it is stock price and upper level pay first- everything else 3rd.

You are so right...it is not family oriented. I started working in 2000 and was terminated 10-2005 because I was not 100+% in Sales. It is NOT a family, it is all about the ALL MIGHTY DOLLAR and who ever is not bringing in the bucks...they put you out. I was terminated the day after my husband had a tragic hunting accident...I was scolded when I called from the hospital mid morning, because I did not call in before my tour. I had to come in that after noon to get my term papers. How about that for a good company with good morals and benefits.

Sorry about the tragic loss and all, but it is a different story in my office I've seen people work in my office for about a year and never make thier numbers before they get asked to leave. It depends on where you are, I suppose.

hehe, nope I'm around and kicking. My office was the most profitable in Small Business Outbound. We are hiring, not firing...and I'm off with pay till next year

Edit: Oh, and BellSouth has layoffs every year, but the article said nothing of laying off. It said elimanting positions. Most people will probably happily take a severence package and move on. This notice probably has a lot to with some kind of restructuring internal to BellSouth

Just an educated guess on my part.

Naw. I should be fine. I don't know about what the brass is thinking about buying or selling. I know Duane has the least amount of stock ownership of mose CEOs I've seen, so I don't know how much he would profit from a sale, but a takeover/buyout might be possible. I don't know after the last bit of mergers and buys that any other company would have the capital, as BellSouth was the most profitable Bell in the US thus far, I believe.

A lot of completely ridiculous and uninformed things are said on this board (especially about the incumbents), but I had to specifically address this one because it's just so stupid.

When BellSouth got rid of 6000 people in 2002, do you know how many came from volunteers taking an offer they were given? 5900. So 100 out of 6000 were actual layoffs. That's less than 2%. Do you know what that package included other than a large chunk of cash (up to 150% of your salary then)? Two year totally paid tuition so that you could go back to school if you wanted. Paid health benefits for 6-months. Help finding another job.

Yeah - really sounds like those people came back from Christmas to find a pink slip and an escorted trip out the door.. Hell, a lot of those people loved the offer - early retirement!

And they're doing the exact same thing this time (though the cash payout is limited to 120% of your salary), and it's only 1500 managers. How many do you think will be involuntary firings? You'd be smart to bet on zero.

Laying fiber is a massive undertaking. BS seems to just keep cutting back and delaying deployement, and now they start cutting jobs. Does this sound like a company that is doing well?

Now, this could position them long term, but if the physical work hasn't been done they still can't grow again in the management level. I would be scared if I worked for BS.

Bellsouth will never be able to compete with real telco's like Verizon. I think Bellsouth is comprised of a bunch of greedy whiny wimps who need to be deported to third world countries IMHO. I am still waiting for someone to prove me wrong.

lol bellsouth is just plain pisses me off.
First they want to make a fuss cause there infastructure sucks and cant produce the speeds other ISP's can so they want to try and shut the whole country down and make sure no other ISp can deploy better service.
Now Bellsouth wants to lay 1500 peeps off lol.
Somebody needs to make Bellsouth STFU and get with the program or else...

The problem is not many people can make Bellsouth change or can even influence a change with in the company without large mass uprise. The few people that can make a difference are all on Bellsouth's payroll.

Bell South outlook shaky; cost cutting needed

Morningstar analysts see a lot of problems with Bell South's prospects. These cost cuts are absolutely needed if they are to obtain sufficient funds for the capital expenditures needed to improve broadband services.
We expect the firm to steadily lose fixed-line phone customers over the next several years, and those remaining will pay less. We assume that the firm will provide this service to a bit more than half the households in its service territory in 2009, down from around 80% today. We think revenue from new services, including a modest contribution from television services, will only partially offset this loss. We expect margins will shrink and capital spending will rise going forward to meet the competition, hurting returns on capital.

I didnt realize how good we had it here with RCN even though I wish they were run better. RCN is fiber to 900 feet. BellSouth will only have fiber to 5000 feet of 50% of its area, thats horrible! Heck DSL at 4000 feet which is what my loop length distance is, is probably about the same service one would get. Put in ADSL2+ at those speeds thats around what, 24MBPS I think tops.

RCN is at 10MBPS max but can scale to 20MBPS potentially. After that its gonna need some new equipment.

Sounds like bellsouth had too many chiefs and not enough indians going around.

Bellsouth needs to get there act together or be bought out. If they would quit blowing money on studies and crap, like that maybe the job cuts wouldnt be needed then would they?

Seems that VZ is the only company to get it

They've decided a while back that the only way to make it is to invest massively in its infrastructure. Meanwhile, BS seems to be tiptoeing around hoping for things to get better. Well, me thinks that they gonna end being bought out while VZ, and SBC to a lesser extent, will survive, even if they don't thrive.

LOL If it wasn't so sad I'd Cry, I been off since last Dec due to back injury from work that Lawyers are still fighting over and wife lost her Job just last Thursday due to downsizing, was suppose to last until end of Jan but since she's higher on the Pole they needed to cut cost I suppose and hired in temps for $6 and let her go without notice, Just called her in the Office and said we're sorry but you can go home now, Thanks!!
