Rupert Murdoch, DirecTV Wireless Broadband
Murdoch makes his play....
by Karl Bode Tuesday 10-Jan-2006 tags: business · wireless
News Corp's Rupert Murdoch recently invaded the UK broadband scene with his purchase of EasyNet, a DSL provider with 2,600 miles of fiber and 36 POPs. In November, whispers began to surface that Murdoch was looking to get into the American broadband business too, after gobbling up a number of US online media outlets (IGN, Myspace, adware vendor Intermix).

Now some details are starting to emerge, and it it appears his plan it to spend a cool billion in conjunction with DirecTV to start a wireless broadband ISP, reports Bloomberg News. No hard details about what technology the companies will use, but it appears as if Wimax will be the front-runner - recall DirecTV executive comments from last August.

"You'll be hearing from us within two months on a very clear plan what will happen, and it's not as expensive as you might think," says Murdoch. "We have a lot of people on this full time at the moment." Murdoch is not only planning to take on the incumbents via wireless broadband, he's clearly taking aim at portal companies like Yahoo, Google, AOL, and Microsoft.

Oh, so true... So true... Nothing like an animated GIF as a background and an annoying Top 40 song playing in the background with no player controls to stop it.

But that's another issue entirely.

well, now that's a whole 'nuther topic...

'course, there is a plethora of absolute muck, I should've specified that it's good for budding musicians/bands to connect w/their fans and have a simple page... nothing beats having a site of your own, but it's kind of neat to network with people who have actual taste, not just a desire to propogate crap.

Exciting

Come on, you have to admit that adding a third player to the broadband mix makes things interesting. Who knows maybe we will see the incumbent cable co and telco step up thier offerings and roll out of next gen service!

Once a cash cow...

DirecTv was once a cash cow, but now that there are other chocies and emerging ones (Verizon, anyone?) DirecTv is no longer the cash cow. To make this point, I've downgraded my package to remove ALL the movie channels because they keep telemarketing me to add StarZPack and other channels multiple times per month! Sorry, that just cost them $40+ per month... Tough luck, directv, make your plans more flexible, and cheaper, or by this time next year, I won't have directv AT ALL!

I dont get it. Because they call you, you limit whats availible to you? I understand the annoyance but how does that help you if you? If you weren't watching those channels, its no loss. But if you were, how does this help? As far as Verizon...yeah that FIOS will be showing up soon in Hollywood (not).

In other news, I think its a good idea there is another competitor in the market. More competition is better that last time I checked.

Hes using his pocket change to create the another empire.Maybe??

@nycmny.fios.verizon.
Well, If I decide to watch any of the 2,000 old titles they show on those $40 worth of networks.. I COULD simply download it, (chuckles)....

And you wonder why Portable Media Players are starting to take off!

Honestly, how many hours in a month do YOU have to watch movies in addition to regular cable-tv channels?

Its simply not worth as much as it used to be, thanks to competitive alternatives, whether it be free or fee based.
If you do, keep supporting the cable pigs with greed in their eyes.. they KNOW subscribership is realizing the same sucking sound that VOIP is making to POTS.
