If you can change the port and speed increases this is likely the cause.
However i don't know what traffic shaping devices they have. It could be packet inspection but that would/should not allow you to change the port and gain performance improvements.

When people find out the orts they are filtering they will go out and buy one of those deep packet inspection boxes that checks sessions for the obvious BITTORRENT protocol header in plain text and only throttle those sessions. They are trying to do it for cheap right now. We all need to impliment on the fly ipsec to stop these stupid ISPs from filtering our traffic based on content and restore true end to end connectivity without middle man interference.

| no ISP should block any service! why the hell does it matter what people use their internet connections for? I don't see ISP's blocking FTP, I can always go at the upload speed I'm suppose to get, yet more and more ISP's want to mention how awesome there speeds are, while blocking or throttleing many of the reasons folks want to take advantage of said speeds. I see no difference between seeding a torrent or offering an FTP server that gets alot of use. Fortunately my ISP doesn't throttle any services, which is the way it should be, but if they ever did, I would show them that they won't stop me from using my upstream connection. I'll gladly if it came down to it set up an anonymous FTP server and say Ha take that! We pay for an internet connection, so let each user use it as they wish! Internet connections are not just one way receive only lines anymore! So we want to seed the latest episode of Systm or other torrent, big deal I say, if I'm paying for a given speed, that shouldn't be for only web and FTP, it should be that speed for whatever services we the customer wish to use now or in the future! | |

| Encryption is the ONLY way As I've so often stated, you can't trust the megacorps, you can't trust the government. The end all solution is end to end encryption. They CANNOT filter that, or throttle that, since they can't see whats going through the traffic. As long as ALL traffic is encrypted at the end points, they won't have any options. Even web traffic should be encrypted and tunneled, to prevent dumbass moves like rogers. | |

People need to learn that:
1) If you want a true DS1, DS3, OC3+, you need to pay for it.
2) Cable and DSL are CONSUMER GRADE services. This means that the capacity of the network is designed around a percentage of users to be online at one time. It IS NOT designed to support 100% of the users at 100% capacity.
3) If the networks, as stated in #2, were designed in such a way, you would be paying a hell of a lot more than $29/39/49/etc month.
Come on people, use your brains. Your use is being limited because you are using more than what is allowed in the model. You want more, buy a T1. -- Bring back chicken and potato chips - Vote Perot!

I believe that since 99% of porn is the same, that it has no copyright. That 1 gonzo film does not differ from another, in my opinion.
The main question is: Does porno pass the originality test?
I say that it does not. If it did, anyone that owns a copyright could minimally change the product to maintain the copyright forever. I think that is why all movie remakes and covers done by bands are significantly different than the original work.

try changing your ports, seems Rogers throttled the port, not the packet, meaning that a new port means new speeds.
I work for the enemy unfort. The enemy being Sympatico. So I know a bit about throttling and how it is done.
I only use Rogers because I know of the problems with Sympatico
Either way, throttling is ports, change your port, fix your problem. Worked for me at least.

| God Awful! God awful Rogers! I'm so ready to switch to Bell. I've read in other forums that whenever somebody called in to complain they claim that it's the user's configuration, and that they never heard of the problem. Every single person that posted their convo with Rogers were almost alike! All of them denying that it's b/c they're blocking off ports or packets.
Honestly tho, I do believe they are blocking off ports. I was using the Burst Client on port 6881-6889. Standard BT ports, worked awesome until December hit. All download died. My router would struggle with UPnP to find a decent port to draw a connect but ended up crashing the router and ultimately having to reboot it every half hour or so.
In early January, I switched to uTorrent using port 1720-1729, and it worked wonders! Dramatic increase of speeds! Now a couple of days ago I noticed that downloads are back down to 3-5 kb/s, and I thought to myself again, that God damn awful Rogers! I've tried randomizing ports, but it doesn't seem to be able to connect as well as 1720 used to. I even tried port 1755, which many said worked for them. But right now nothing seems to be working. I don't know, maybe it is time to switch over to Bell. God damn awful Rogers. Rot in HELL MF-er!

| Re: God Awful! Yeah I'm a rogers valued customer too. And I don't doubt that they may not be capping ur service, or haven't gotten around to it. But I can't even hit the 60GB mark cause they're restricting packets or ports. I can't download a file with out my router crashing b/c of the low speed. I switched my ports to 30000 and when I did, I was downloading at around 500kb/s again. However, the port was useless the next day. So it really doesn't matter if you're a valued customer, I can't even get to 10GB a month if I can't even download anything.

| Some thoughts on what is going on Hi all, I'm a rogers customer from the downtown area of Toronto. I have been experimenting to find the perfect solution to the reduced speeds lately and this is what I have been able to come up with.
1) Use port 1720 2) If you are not getting high speeds but see a high number of peers and seeds switch to encrypted transfers (I use the latest version of Azerous) and wait up to 30 minutes for speeds to pickup.
My version of Azerous has a few settings for Encryption that are of note, the most important to us is the setting to not connect to non-encrypted peers. Encryption has to occur on both ends. If they are not allowing non encrypted peers then they will not allow you to connect if you are not encrypted. On the other end of the stick, if you encrypt then you will not connect to non encrypted peers (unless you check the box to allow).
That's all good, just check the box to connect to non-encrypted, No. Whats the point of encrypting then. So the really solution is for a major push in encryption for all BT clients.
And last but not least, if you don't have it get Peer Guardian 2. The major Corps are now using fake versions and connecting to our torrents to give us bad data. Peer guardian has millions of IP's that are part of this scheme indexed and will block them from accessing your PC, effectively telling them you are no longer seeding or d/ling the torrent.
Until we get more people with Encryption and a Peer shield like Peer guardian we will all be running slower and slower until it would be quicker to get a part time job to save money and buy the movies\games\tv shows..
I'm not trying to preach to the masses and I could be wrong with my approach but I can not test as a single node on the rogers network.
If we have any volunteers we could have a fuck rogers day and as a group test different combinations until the right one is found.
And for those looking to just share with their friends, build a web or ftp site and use dynip (google it, the service is free) to get a url to your computer (ie: »mycpu.dynip.com) No caps on that for me.

Now I can enjoy all my shows that I usually miss. =) I'm running on the latest version of Azureus (2.4) and am running on port 30000. Great download speeds. averaging around 150 kb/s to 400 kb/s, all depending on how many people have the encryption turned on. Thanks again.
