17% of 800 consumers surveyed like $1.99 download model
(old news - 05:42PM Wednesday Jan 11 2006)
tags: Video
Only 17% of some 800 consumers polled in a new survey said they would prefer paying $1.99 (the seeming standard price per episode being put forth via most outlets) instead of watching the program free, but with ads. According to Multi-channel News, Apple announced at MacWorld that they've sold 8 million programs via the iTunes video store since the system debuted in October. Of course this ignores the pink elephant in the room.

Have 30 sec skip...will watch

With DVRs being popular and most (eg Comcast + TiVo) with 30 second skip...why bother paying?

Re: Have 30 sec skip...will watch

That was my thought too. I'd have to be in the 83% group, if for no other reason than I've already bought the equipment to get around watching the ads.

Now if it was cut and dry, $1.99 or watch commercials.....well I might just rent more movies.

Enjoy it.

I believe the 30 sec skip isn't going to be around much longer if the content providers get their way. I'd prefer product placement anyway to annoying ads.

Even my old Sony VCR has a 30 second "skip" function, so that's nothing new, either.

There's precious little on TV worth $1.99 anyway.

The bigger "pink elephant" is that Apple has managed to figure out yet another way to milk it's faithful cow herd. Who in their right mind would pay for this crap?

Whats free? You pay for the signal unless you use rabbit ears or you are an electronics buff and you still have to watch the ads. Then premium TV costs extra to watch the show without ads.

Being that the majority of programming I watch is OTA HD...that is pretty much what I use.

omg you and your 1920x1080 make me sick.

even if you get like 5-6 OTA HD stations, they are probably decent channels with everything you would want to watch.

i wish there was OTA HD in ottawa, on.

Re: Have 30 sec skip...will watch

I get way more than 6 OTA...closer to 15 or so. Major networks here run multiple HD channels and all of the networks have digital counterparts.

ABC here for instance has their regular network programming, an all news channel and a weather channel. Same with NBC. Our PBS channels run their local feed, plus a national feed. OTher PBS channels, operated by universities operate up to 6 channels each with various programming. Not everything HD of course but all digital and most pretty good.

Say you watched three 1/2hr shows per night at $2 each for 6 nights(a modest 1.5 hrs per night for the whole family) . We will assume 1 night out partying per week. That is $36/wk * 4.3 weeks/mo = $154/mo.

For that same price I can get the Comcast Platinum pkg and have access to every premier network, plus OnDemand, plus 2 DVR's, plus high speed internet. And with the DVR I can skip all the commercials.

Unless you watch only a very few programs per week, that pricing model is insane. Only really stupid people will go for it.

No wonder the poll came out like it did.

I want to know the demographics used. If those 800 people are 75 % elderly with no internet.Of course it will show the results they have provided.
62% of survey respondents said they would prefer getting it for free with commercials, versus 17% who chose paying $1.99 without commercials. However, 21% are undecided.

In the coveted demographic of consumers aged 18-34, 68% chose free, ad-supported versus 26% favoring pay, and only 5% undecided.

The survey was conducted by telephone among 800 respondents in November 2005.

You sure about that about the Comcast PVR? I have the Comcast PVR Box and it skips nothing....you can fast forward through the commmercials but you cannot skip them.

Unless of course you are talking about a TiVo Solution but your post is not clear on that point.

The Dct 6412 remote can be programmed with a 30 sec skip and using macros multiple 30 sec skips. I go thru 3 or 4 min commercial breaks in a couple secs.

About the same if you bought the series DVD of any show for one season. But the DVDs give you more.

the ads producers are the problem

Ads were at one time were entertaining, now there are stupid, racist, and have political undertones, and thats just for a cereal commerical. I miss the chanel number 5 commericals.

Ad driven TV

A reasonable price would be the rental cost of the show. For series in which several episodes are included per DVD when published, the cost per episode should be the DVD rental cost divided by the number of episodes. In the USA this would be under 50 cents each in most cases.

A

If I was an ad company, what I would do is have you can pay 2 dollars per show OR pay a 5 dollar sign up fee and then only 1 dollar after that. Therefore, in the end the user will save AND the subscriper will keep on watching the TV show to use the 5 dollars regardless if they like it that much or not.

PBS Coulda Told You That

They had to beg and plead for money to put on the types of programming that there are now entire stations for (A&E, Discovery, etc.)

People are fine with paying, so long as they don't know they're paying.

ad driven..

hmmm..

I'd take em any way as long as a) it's free b) can be used in MY player of choice (includes using a normal video codec like DivX, XviD, etc..) The commercials can then easily be edited out if desired.

Until that happens, I'll stay with sharing with my close friends thru BT, thank you very much.

all you can eat?

Given the success of the blockbuster movie pass and netflix with its all you can eat movie rental plan, ... wouldn't it make sense to have an all you can DL plan -- hell even if its capped at 10 or 20 movies per month or x amount of movies per week, it wouldn't be bad as long as it was high quality and fast downloads.

I could see this for sports.

The only way I could see this working would be for sports; like golf, football, racing, and baseball or basketball. Other than that though I would not pay extra.

Edit: and for the whole SHOW not just the highlights like iTunes has right now for college football.

The major sports have been trying to figure out a way to go pay-per-view for a long time. People are just too used to getting the games for free. Remember when NBC put the Olympics on pay-per-view and charged about $200 for it? There was also a season or two when all of the NHL playoff games were on pay-per-view only. Turns out nobody wanted to pay to watch it at home so droves of people showed up at their local bar to watch the games.

Availability of Free (w/ ads)?

said by »www.multichannel.com/article/CA6···nid=2226 :
Telephone interviews with 800 consumers found that 62% of respondents would prefer to get a favorite TV show they might have missed with commercials, rather than paying $1.99 for the download. Only 17% said they would rather pay the $1.99.
Between itunes and Google, there are some shows that I might of missed that I can view without ads for $1.99. I am a little lost regarding where I can view a show that I missed, with ads, for free (barring the pink elephant reference). Short of getting into torrents, does a place exist where I can view missed shows with ads for free? If not, the basis of the survey seems moot. Unless someone is in the wings planning to offer free IPTV...

Re: Availability of Free (w/ ads)?

I wonder why the network just don't stream the shows on their websites with the ads in place.

Then again all the networks own their own cable channels. Why not just re-air it on cable?

This whole thing is a scam.

Ad-driven is good for one reason...

You can do stuff during them... In those 3-4 minutes of ads, you can easily do either 1) run to the can after doing the funny dance in your chair, 2) get another snack/drink/coke/water/beer or 3) get in a quick smoke (if you smoke)... Of course with TiVo, you can pause at an ad, do all of that, and fast forward to the show.

DVD

I prefer DVD over standard TV or episode downloads. If it's a regular TV series that I like, I'll likely buy the DVD box set. Downloading episodes for a fee is of no interest to me if the show is on DVD or will be soon.
