ABC here for instance has their regular network programming, an all news channel and a weather channel. Same with NBC. Our PBS channels run their local feed, plus a national feed. OTher PBS channels, operated by universities operate up to 6 channels each with various programming. Say you watched three 1/2hr shows per night at $2 each for 6 nights(a modest 1.5 hrs per night for the whole family) . We will assume 1 night out partying per week. That is $36/wk * 4.3 weeks/mo = $154/mo.
For that same price I can get the Comcast Platinum pkg and have access to every premier network, plus OnDemand, plus 2 DVR's, plus high speed internet. And with the DVR I can skip all the commercials.
Unless you watch only a very few programs per week, that pricing model is insane. Only really stupid people will go for it.

62% of survey respondents said they would prefer getting it for free with commercials, versus 17% who chose paying $1.99 without commercials. However, 21% are undecided.
In the coveted demographic of consumers aged 18-34, 68% chose free, ad-supported versus 26% favoring pay, and only 5% undecided.
The survey was conducted by telephone among 800 respondents in November 2005.

| Ad driven TV A reasonable price would be the rental cost of the show. For series in which several episodes are included per DVD when published, the cost per episode should be the DVD rental cost divided by the number of episodes. In the USA this would be under 50 cents each in most cases.

Therefore, in the end the user will save AND the subscriper will keep on watching the TV show to use the 5 dollars regardless if they like it that much or not.

The major sports have been trying to figure out a way to go pay-per-view for a long time. People are just too used to getting the games for free. Remember when NBC put the Olympics on pay-per-view and charged about $200 for it? There was also a season or two when all of the NHL playoff games were on pay-per-view only. Turns out nobody wanted to pay to watch it at home so droves of people showed up at their local bar to watch the games.

Only 17% said they would rather pay the $1.99.
Between itunes and Google, there are some shows that I might of missed that I can view without ads for $1.99. I am a little lost regarding where I can view a show that I missed, with ads, for free (barring the pink elephant reference). Short of getting into torrents, does a place exist where I can view missed shows with ads for free? If not, the basis of the survey seems moot. Unless someone is in the wings planning to offer free IPTV...

In those 3-4 minutes of ads, you can easily do either 1) run to the can after doing the funny dance in your chair, 2) get another snack/drink/coke/water/beer or 3) get in a quick smoke (if you smoke)... Of course with TiVo, you can pause at an ad, do all of that, and fast forward to the show.
