Bloggers irked over 'terrible' ploy
(old news - 09:45AM Friday Jan 13 2006)
tags: business · VoIP
VoIP provider Sunrocket has launched a marketing blog where users are encouraged to gripe about companies in order to win prizes. This has irked bloggers such as Om Malik and Andy Beal. Of course with Sunrocket's recent outage history, it could be an invitation for negative PR, but the site - though seemingly a little inane and frankly a bit pointless - is at least clearly labeled as a Sunrocket marketing effort. Where's the outrage over My Cable Nightmare, a PR gripe website started by Consumers4Choice, a bell funded astroturf and lobbying group?

Yawn

Oh look. Another site on the internet where consumers can complain about companies. As if we needs another one. The winner from 1/11 was someone who wrote a few paragraphs about having to wait a couple of extra minutes because Dunkin Donuts was training some new hires. Yawn.

Where's the outrage ?

Could it be that (1) these sites are insignificant and irrelevant and (2) the only people who care are these self-righteous self-appointed pundits jabbing at each other while sparring for google hits?

"Bloggers irked" is akin to "squirrel annoyed". They may be fun to watch while they chase each other and chatter away but at the end of the day they're just rodents residing somewhere down the food chain, and their outrage means nothing unless you're another squirrel.

Yawn, indeed.

Exactly. Om Malik is a complete bore. Who cares about his opinion?

As more and more people ask exactly that question, Om gets ever more sensitive about the competition from new blogs....

Is anybody surprised by this?

This is exactly the reason I don't visit the VoIP forum on this site anymore. The mod's may not get it, but this site is being played exactly the same way, and has been for months. And the reviews section is "pumped up" as well, making it worthless.

the no-gotcha company ?

Dec 2004: cancelled service within the 30-day trial period. Zero balance as confirmed by CS rep.

Jan 2005: My CC was billed. Complained and finally got it resolved.

Aug 2005: Got a spam from them about a promotion. They used the email address that I signed up with.

Nov 2005: Got a bill for Oct-Nov 2005 period. Complained via email and they said they would stop.

Dec 2005: Got another bill for Nov-Dec 2005 period.

Once they gotcha, they gotcha.

Report your credit card stolen is the only way you're going to get them to stop billing you.

Hmm...

Seems to me, the only people with negative responses to the blogger responses (say that ten times fast!) would be Rocketeers.

Think about it... people don't tend to issue random put-downs to Om and Andy unless they seriously screw something up. Now, I'm not saying they're tech gods or anything, but I would think someone could find a more useful criticism than "they're boring" when it comes to their opinion of a SunRocket fiasco.

And as for the suggestion of padded reviews on the site, take it up with the mods and make sure you've got some damn good evidence behind you first. You're suggesting libel.

Re: Hmm...

It is not a fiasco. It is shrewd marketing. You are responding to the bait that SunRocket placed before you. The more people respond, the more publicity and business for SunRocket. The marketing gurus at SunRocket are pure Geniuses. What people think is not of importance, what is of importance is the bottom line. If it works, do it.

Re: Hmm...

Call it what you want.

As Andy indicated over at his blog, I wouldn't want to be SunRocket when those companies start complaining about misleading reports or libel.

Re: Hmm...

SunRocket is not responsible for what other people post on their blogs nor would they post a post which was libelous on Everyday Hogwash, that would be foolish.

Tell everyone what a RIPOFF this SUNROCKET IS

I went with Sunrocket after a friend recommended it. It is a pure joke that they give prizes for complainers of other companies that are ripoffs. SUNROCKET IS THE BIGGEST RIPOFF EVER. Their cust. svc. people always say they are fixing the problem. It never happens. No one calls back- no reply to my emails.

When I installed their system in Nov. it did not work. It took them several service calls to figure out I had been sent a defective gizmo. They said they would overnight the gizmo and it came 3 days later. On one of these service calls the rep said I could get additional phones for $3 per each. I said send me 4. He said he could not arrange it, but someone would call me back and arrange the order. I never got a call. In Jan they billed me for $120 on my cc. I called and no one knew why I was billed $120. After 4 calls, they said it was the 4 phones they had sent me. I said I never got the phones and never would have ordered them at $30 ea. Two months later they still contend that they refuse to reimburse me for the phones I never received. This has taken 4 phone calls and 2 emails. Sometimes you wait 45+ minutes before a service person picks up. When you ask to speak to a supervisor, no one comes to the phone.

Re: Tell everyone what a RIPOFF this SUNROCKET IS

I'm sorry you feel that way. I've had a very positive experience with SunRocket. I've saved a lot of money and have been treated very well by their employees. Outside of a couple service interruptions, everything has been very good.

I too have had a fantastic Sunrocket experience. I have redeemed points and have had excellent service. Customer service just needs a little patience. I have had the service for 7 months and I have not experienced 1 problem with outages or dropped calls. Voicemail works perfect and forwarding is fine. I am saving a lot of money and, frankly I am elated and hope they continue to grow and stay in business.
This is far better than any land line based company I have ever used!
