Not just for the Jetsons anymore

After 12 years of development and with the help of NASA's Embedded Web Technology software, the TMIO company is delivering its first smart ovens. You can monitor these refrigerator-ovens from any Internet connection. For example, you can adjust and control the oven settings from your cell phone and be sure that dinner is ready when you get home. But cooking from your office or your car won't come cheap: these ovens carry a price tag of $8,699.

Sigh

*Sigh* Is this really needed? All it is, is a gadget. And gadgets are never useful. A cellphone isn't a gadget, a computer isn't, but an internet oven is.

I WANT ONE!

I would love to have dinner ready when I get home!!!

I am tired after work. This is perfect for the WORKING MOM's.

I was just thinking about a refrigerator similliar to this type of thing.
I was thinking LCD touch screen, internet access, a "SMART" recipe book where you could tap the recipe's you want to make, have it combine a checklist of ingrediants needed, send it to your printer for shopping (or order online for home delivery), and then combine the steps to show what you do in the least amount of time to make a full dinner.

Also, have the frig talk to the oven to communicate when to turn on, etc.
A family calendar would be nice with an alarm to remind you of your schedule (or a TODAY) screen to look at... maybe different options to have calender profiles and a combined "all" calendar.

Maybe incorporate VOIP + webcam in the Frig computer so that you can talk and see the other person.

The funny thing is that most of this stuff is capable now.

Set up a wireless network in your kitchen, add a "touchscreen" upgrade to your current monitor ($200.00), »atestore.enablemart.com/productD···store=10

Vonage and packet8 already have video phones, and now the super oven... I love it!

I guess I will have to start saving now for one of these!

How many working moms have $8,699 to spend on an oven? For that matter, how many people in general do? This isn't one of those things where you wait a few months for the price to drop. With it starting this high, who knows how long it will take to drop to average price.

hahahhaah 8700 bucks for an Oven, only an absolute Moron would pay that much for an oven. i can get a good fridge, electric stove and the Used pickup truck to bring them home in for that kinda cash.

Crock pots already do this and are far less expensive, complicated and intrusive. I make a mean crock pot pot roast, in fact. You likely couldn't tolerate my chili though...

absolute nonsense...

plain and simple... you know, not everything in this world needs to be invented, used or even said... now, if the oven actually made the food, like say, in a star trek replicator style, now that would be something... otherwise, this development is lame...

For die-hard gadget lovers only

I have a friend that would buy one of these even if him and his wife would only use it 3 times a year.

And if you want a laugh, read the owners manual( »www.tmio.com/downloads/UC_Manual···1110.pdf ). It would be easier and cheaper to eat out for 2 yrs on what this oven costs.

New Tech

No need to hate on new technology, but I don't see how this is exactly revolutionary. It sounds like something a hobbyist could do.

1. install a (heat resistant) webcam in your oven
2. put a temperature guage in
3. design a program to work with hardware for controlling the temperature
4. design a program for interfacing with the oven from your computer

I think the point he was trying to make was that this isnt necessarily 'revolutionary', rather evolutionary as it mixes in old technology.

Food goes bad

Yea, I'm missing the point here too. If I were going to put something in the oven before work at say like 8 am, by the time I connect at 4pm to tell the oven to cook it, well the food has already gone bad. Isn't much that can be put in the oven that early like that.

It is also a refrigerator as well. The food won't go bad.

Jetsons knott Star trek/wars maybe?

I think the real application till the price became more afourdable.Like plasma tvs or flat screen tvs.Is the commercial use like restaurants or commercial kitchens.

BTW anyone recall the Dial in Vcr a few years ago.You could pop a tape in and then.Set it by a remote location to record a show.(set it and forget it)

What they need is to take it one step further.Since its connected to the internet.Make it order your grocery's from safeway.com.Give the driver access to stock your food and then make the NEW OVEN prep prepare and then cook it for you.

So after a hard days work. All you gotta do is EAT when you get home. Now that would be nice.

I wouldnt even need a wife either lol.Cept for the kids part darn.I am waiting to order my clone tho female that is.haha

I think its cool!

I have often though it would be cool to be able to pre-heat the oven from the take and bake pizza shop. Just imagine, you're standing in line, set your oven on you cell phone, get home, throw it in, and save yourself 20 minutes. Now all I need is an internet crockpot!

How about this

forget the oven I want one of those food hydrators like in back to the future part 2. Now that would be worth it.

Internet Controlled? Bad idea.

Ok, forget the obvious "oven catches a virus" or "Oven BSoD" jokes. If you are connecting anything to the Internet, there's a chance a hacker will play around with it.

Suppose you just set your dinner to be perfectly cooked when you get home. Now a hacker gets access, sees that you are warming up your dinner, and sets the temperature fifty degrees warmer so your dinner is burnt when you get home. The next day, he hacks back in and sets it fifty degrees too low so your dinner isn't cooked at all. Or maybe he turns the oven off. Or maybe he's really malicious and turns the temperature all the way to the maximum (which might result in a house fire or at best some *really* burnt food).

I might be able to see a combo device (*not* connected to the Internet) that kept your food cold (and thus safe from bacteria growth) until it heated the food up at a pre-programmed time. (One of the things I like about slow cookers is that you can put the dish on in the morning and come back at night to a fully cooked meal.) However, putting your oven on the Internet is just asking for trouble.

RE:" Intelligent" ovens

Doesn't sound too smart to me. Most ovens have timers that let you preset time & temp alreadyÑand they have for over 30 years.

A TRULY smart oven would have to have an intelligent senses of sight and smellÑand be able to adjust the temperature if the roast is browning to quickly or the center of the casserole is still frozen. Do they have a webcam that can tolerate 450¼F? I doubt there's anything near term likely to duplicate a cook's best skill-knowing how something in the oven is *supposed* to smell.

Gotta admit, though, it sure would be fun to mess with the meals of anyone gullible enough to plunk down the dough for one...

The Intelligent what...

I dont see the need for that technology yet... It may one day have some practical use, but not yet.

The LG fridge is cool as far as watching tv or getting recipies... The feature where it determines storage of food should not be a manual thing. The fridge should be able to determine what is being stored without doing anything. Worst case allow it to scan barcodes on items to auto enter it if necessary.

Microsoft has done the intelligent home where many of these features are built into the counter and other areas of the kitchen. I would see the home becomming more intelligent before the appliances do...
