Sort of: for networking monitoring use
(old news - 01:26PM Monday Jan 30 2006)
tags: business · BPL
BPL company Ambient, whose financial situation we discussed last week, has announced it's expanding its trial with Con-Ed in New York. Ambient has received $200k from New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to help fund expansion of the network monitoring portion of the project. Many Utilities are only interested in this aspect of the technology, and aren't sold by the ROI of getting into the residential broadband market.

Doubt the extra money will make a big difference

It sounds like ConEd is just giving them enough money to stick around long enough that they can complete their monitoring rollout. I still give little hope that Ambient will be around for a long time.

As ham radio operators have pointed out all along, this has nothing to do with and never will have anything to do with rural access. BPL is subject to the same economies of scale as DSL and cable. The only thing it has been offering in many areas is another pipe, and a low speed "polluting" one at that, besides cable and DSL. Mind you that the "polluting" part does not apply to the two newer BPL designs that were specifically designed to avoid emissions on the HF spectrum.

Here on Long Island, the Long Island Power Authority is studying whether or not to offer BPL. This in a place where Verizon is rolling out FiOS, DSL has good penetration and Optimum Online offers 15/2 basic with 30/2 optional service

I don't have access to this website, but here is a short excerpt from the article. If I find the link I will post it.

BPL Not Well Suited For Rural Broadband Deployment Says NRTC Study

26 January 2006
Warren's Washington Internet Daily
Volume 7; Issue 17

In a setback for BPL technology, a soon-to-be- released National Rural Telecom Co-op (NRTC) study concluded BPL isn't appropriate for "sparsely-populated rural" broadband and utility applications.

Is this the part where our favorite......

....stock fluffer comes in?

"Waiting for the BPL cut and paste article of the day."

Looks like the broadband part of it doesn't make financial sense in an area already served by other providers.

I wonder

How much of the funding was given as a tax write off. I strikes me that BPL is a ideal area for investors that are looking for a place to obtain capital loses to reduce their tax liability.
