Digging into a Bank of America scam
(old news - 09:14AM Friday Feb 03 2006)
tags: scam
One of the users in our Spam, Scam, and charge busters forum digs into a Bank of America phishing scam in progress. The user wades through the scam and tracks the credit fraud to an internet cafe in downtown Bandung - the capital city of West Java Province, about 100 miles southeast of Jakarta. It's a thread worth keeping an eye on if you're interested in security and fraud busting.

Shouldn't the FBI be doing this?

Its great that we have members helping out but shouldn't the FBI doing this too? One would think they would have the resources to also get this shut down asap.

Re: Shouldn't the FBI be doing this?

If you told the FBI, 6 months later they would pickup the case, 1 year later arrest the guy after he's finished his "work"

Probably true, so much of our resources are tied up in the GWOT.

These cyber crimes are now an epidemic, and it will get a lot worse. Only the big fish get any attention from law enforcement. Unfortunately criminals know that their chances of being caught are negligible. Even criminals within our juristiction have little to worry about. Despite having turned over prima facia evidence of over a $150,000 cyber crime to the feds, that led to the front door of this California couple. Six months later they are still out there enjoying the fruits of their crimes.

but..

please don't let someone in Hollywood think they can make a 2 hour movie of this. I would love the public to get educated but not by the embellishing, truth-distortion machine that cranks out "Oscar-nominated Stamp of rental worthiness".

Maybe if the history or discovery channel production cos...

Definitely worth following this...

Re: but..

There already was a book written years ago, the first one that I'm aware of called the "Cuckoo's Egg" written by Cliff Stoll. The book was interesting at the time, granted it is quite dated based upon today's computer technology.

Also as I recall Stoll was, shall I say, a "unique" individual.

Oh and don't miss his cookie recipie in the middle of the book.

Re: but..

I read that shortly after it came out...neat book. I was still getting my e-mail through Telnet at the time. Stoll's original career was that of astronomy, which makes the story even more interesting. Most of his "hacking" knowledge is self-taught.

self-taught is incorrect. that's like saying I lend myself money when it should be others lend me money.
You mean self-learned? You can't teach yourself but you can learn yourself??? That's like saying Me eat potato, Me like you when ya twisting words around that is bad grammar IMHO.

Wow. I mean wow.

Is there something in the water today that people are scrutinizing my 4 sentence post? (flattering though it is. )

Like I say to everyone in a similar snit, if you want to start a flame war, knock yourself out. I'll be somewhere else. It's a nice day out, I think I'll catch some non-LCD rays. Ciao.

Dude, you need to chill and stop being anal retentive about what is being written, try to focus on what is being said. It looks like you need some self awareness. Lol, self learned, that has to be the stupidest term for teaching yourself something. Go back to grammar school. It is used, it is correct, and it makes sense so go back to your circle jerk.

Yes, I have his book. And the yummy cchip recipe.
(It's still a good read, albeit dated...TTY.)

I just think that our email users of today aren't keen on why they get this stuff.

I even get miffed when I use google (and it gives me UK searches...I am not in the UK!) and some links try to push a trojan on me.

Hmm

We all know Jakarta is smack dab in the middle of the FBIs jurisdiction....And they could easily march down there and tell this scammer off and arrest him and throw him in jail...

/sarcasm

Lets think before typing now..

The FBI doesn't have to arrest anyone to get involved. If the crime occurs here, as in the Bank of America, the FBI can issue an arrest warrant and confer with foreign government to either extradite (if there's treaty) or investigate and wait for more information on what's going on in order to try to put a stop to the crime.

The foreign government can also move to shut down an illegal operation and jail the perp. So the FBI getting involved is very possible instead of sitting back and doing nothing and telling people to think before typing, which someone, it looks like, hasn't done

FBI.....no....Turn them into the TV Shows!

Send the info to Dateline NBC or other TV news shows.

Great story and it will turn up the heat on the fed's to get something done.

If the TV shows will do the story.
