I appologize for the poor quality of the picture; while I have a scanner, it's not hooked up at the moment. So, I used the only thing I had so I could share the information.
I don't care about the spelling mistakes or the poor gramer, frankly, I don't give a hoot about it.
None the less, the pic is legit. Got another flyer yesterday saying they would be installing the gear today and would we be kind enough to leave our closets open.
The contractor says they think they should have all the "closets" wired in the next couple of weeks. Then we'll have to wait for Vz to hook up the fiber..... drat

The NY metro area is just not quite so "neat", and you have much flakier property owners that could really give two sh*ts about whether there's FiOS or not. Even out here in NJ I've been looking at the building I'm in and I'd be truly shocked if they could run fiber into each apartment for any sort of reasonable cost. That's what I'm afraid of. The Board of Directors in the co-op that I live in are a bunch of old-school dinosaurs who try to keep any amount of consruction to a minimum. I know for a fact that they are going to start kicking and screaming when Verizon comes to them with a proposal to upgrade the wiring to fiber. On the other hand, hopefully they can use the wire ducts that Cablevision installed in the hallways to run their fiber. They recently installed a DirecTV dish on our roof and are using the same ducts to run coax to the apartments of those who want it. Hopefully they can use it for fiber cables as well when Verizon starts wiring up my neighborhood.

| Old buildings may be a deployment problem in New York, but I think a more likely problem will be people trying to get the government to force Verizon to deploy in places they don't want to deploy yet. That will drive Verizon away for sure. Nothing like a misplaced sense of entitlement to ruin things for other people. | |

| Kinda OT but I just wish... ..They'd admit that they're going to be offering FIOS in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh in the near future. I go to work every day and have to go thru 4 or 5 work areas in my 5 mile dive to work, all verizon or their contractors...none of em willing to talk.

| Hmmm.... I live in Brooklyn, NY in a fairly large apartment building (about 100 units). I was in the basement tonight, and I saw something new on the "telecom wall" as I call it. (The wall with all the boxes and wiring on it). I noticed a metal pipe coming in, seemingly, from the street outside. Running out of this pipe was a thick black cable, that had these rubberized orange rings on it that read "Fiber Optic Cable", with a big plug on the end of it, connected to a beige box abot 12" wide x 8" high x 2" deep (roughly). On this boix, in the upper left corner was the verizon logo. There was a white sticker with some letters and numbers on it. There was really nothing else on the box that I could see, just a plain, beige colored metal box.
I wonder what that is for? I have been checking feverishly for FIOS, but it always tells me it's not available in my area.
When the DSL rage hit some years back, we were one of the first areas to be upgraded (more like uprooted) with new lines. I haven't seen them around here, but I work during the day.
I wonder if there's hope for us... | |

Broadband over Power Line (BPL) is a technology that enables the delivery of a suite of
Internet Protocol (IP) based services using the existing power distribution infrastructure.
In early 2005, Ambient deployed BPL service in a 16 floor, 213 unit condominium
building located on Manhattan's upper west side.
BPL installations in multiple-dwelling unit (MDU) buildings are similar to area-wide BPL
network installations. The in-building BPL network is also built from a few basic types of
components: couplers that transfer the communications signal to and from the medium
and low voltage power distribution lines, nodes that receive and transmit the signal from
and to the backhaul network and the medium and low voltage power distribution lines,
and modems that transfer the communications signal to and from end users.
There are however some significant differences. Where an area-wide BPL network
typically connects to the backhaul network at a utility sub-station, an MDU BPL network
typically connects to a new or existing high-speed data link in the basement where
electricity enters the building, or with a roof-top wireless access point. Where an
area-wide BPL network uses overhead or underground medium-voltage distribution lines
to construct network segments, an MDU BPL installation utilizes the medium-voltage
and/or the low-voltage power lines in the building.

| Actually, its been under wraps.. Verizon engineers have multiple solutions to mdu deployment including about 1/2 dozen different size ONT interface boxes for apartment buildings of various size (part of the original request for proposals that resulted in vendors making equipment for the 2003 buildout) Here we are 2 1/2 years later says, wow, they have a solution. Its been widely known that Verizon balked at the costs of 'wiring' some un-prewired for fiber buildings (above 20+apts) without a majority of that cost being subsidized by building owners. Below 20apt units, there has been a bit of redlining going on because the uptick of single or dual dwelling units were part of the initial 'beta' deployment phase of consumers. Lack of an uptick in video subscribers despite franchise agreements is another reason to add harder, and longer to deploy infrastructure.
So, rather than cut prices: what else to do, Hmm.. get all hot and bothered about a 2 1/2 year old solution which they are NOW taking seriously about implementing.
