Codec configuration problem resolved
(old news - 01:14PM Saturday Feb 18 2006)
tags: dsl · alternatives · VoIP
Earlier this week we discussed Earthlink's rebranding of Covad's Line Powered Voice technology, which requires no TA and is being bundled with 8Mbps ADSL2+ service in select markets. One of the drawbacks our users reported was that it wasn't playing nice with alarm systems or fax machines. According to a new post from a Covad tech in our forums, the company has resolved these problems based on information from our users:
"A codec configuration problem was found that prevented all modem-based telephony devices from operating on his line. A subsequent sweep has corrected this issue for all LPV end users. If you have experienced problems with fax, alarm system, etc. on LPV, please retry those devices now."
Our users are confirming that those systems now work with the new service.

Nice customer service response by Earthlink/Covad

Well, it is nice to see a company respond quickly to a problem and fix things right away. All companies should respond this fast to known problems.

They admitted a problem, and fixed it quick. Kudos to them, good work.

CoVad has always been an upstanding CLEC, and Earthlink began its carreer as a forward thinking/acting dialup provider. I have never had a bad experience with either company. Just wish I could get them out here in ND. They were outstanding in Western WA.

I just wish ELN would dump the outsourced tech support. I support the right of the Indian techs to make a living as much as anyone, but the support just isn't as good as it was when they were based here. And we sure do need the jobs at home.

Really, if ELN pitched themselves as an American sompany with tech support based here, especially in small towns, and they rolled out this bundled service with Covad in lots of markets, they'd have a potent marketing campaign to work with. Give people VoIP that works, to them, just like their phone line, plus, give them good DSL, and many may take a serious look at it.

I also think they could go far by stressing that they support a neutral Internet connection. All they need to do is go to Google and other sites and tell them, "Look, we aren't going to try to extort money from you." Make the content providers feel good about working with you, and you'll have a much friendlier relationship with them.

Good. I'm glad to see that "ruralsourcing" is catching on. Not that Omaha is rural by any means, but it isn't a huge market, either.

There are many small markets with people who could do stuff like this. Not to mention that these areas are nice places to live, with a low cost of living and a more laid back lifestyle.

"Not as think as you drunk as I am"...after studying it for 1 minute, I laughed my ass for 5. Too funny! Reminds me of the Buffet song "The weather is here, I wish you were beautiful."

Excellent points on potential ELNK/COVD marketing strategy. I like the tagline that they've tried a few times that it's "The Fire Your Phone Company" service.

I think they're playing nice with T & VZ hoping for out-of-region business though and will refrain from smacking them too much.
