Another Major SunRocket Outage
After fall problems and apparent improvements
Users in our VoIP forum report that VoIP provider Sunrocket is experiencing another major national outage. A series of significant outages last fall outraged many customers, and led to the CEO promising improvement - improvement that had apparently arrived, until this morning. According to Sunrocket, "engineers are working to resolve this as quickly as possible."

Suckrocket down again!

It's been over 5 hours of yet another nationwide outage.
»[SunRocket] Sunrocket down again?

The web site is not working either. Previously it said that your Voice light might go out on your gizmo (but they didn't mention that you also can't place or receive calls).

Go Suckrocket!

Users will eventually just abandon this company and go elsewhere. There are plenty of competitors out there with much better track records. The fallout in the VOIP arena is coming soon, with the major telcos and cable companies starting to grab up more and more of the VOIP customers.

Re: Suckrocket down again!

I use Sunrocket cause they're cheap (and perhaps in software/reliability AND price). I know VOIP is a new tech and will have problems, so I'm sure not going to pay a premium for it. IMO, VOIP offerings from VZ, T, etc. are just as susceptible to such problems.

I think most small VOIP companies hope for a buy out, and I think that's increasingly likely as Vonage moves on with plans to go public. So, IMO, while some VOIP companies will lose subscribers and whither away, I bet Sunrocket will be bought before they die.

Re: Suckrocket down again!

Exactly... I am with vonage but switching to sunrocket. If it wasn't for me having to call Japan cheaply (this, calling cards, or Skype is the cheapest way to go but Skype doesn't work and the calling cards all seem to mess up your minutes), use my security system (there are IP or cellular based systems that I am thinking of switching to), or having kids use the line then I wouldn't use a home phone! Cingular rollover has 3500 minutes saved up for me...

Re: Suckrocket down again!

Let me remind you, Ladies and Gentlemen, not all VoIP providers are created equal. Someone with a few (hundred) years of experience running networks is more likely to provide you with a more reliable service than say someone with a few (hundred) days given equal motivation. Plugging a VoIP-to-PSTN gateway does not constitute a VoIP provider.

However, it goes without saying, that if the last mile is in the control of your competitors, your business model of selling VoIP frankly is not worth the paper napkin it was scrambled on.

Thanks for trying?

SR

SunRocket needs to learn from previous outages (that I've seen) and at least post SOME kind of information on their main page regarding this. The first thing people are going to do once they realize service is down is log into their SR account.

The SR website is up but account access seems to be down.

BTW, SunRocket sub here for 1 month - 1st issue so far. Just noticed this morning - I was receiving incoming calls last night.

Re: Fanboys and Fangirls

You beat me to the punch. I've been a semi-lurker in the VoIP forum for a while now and there never seems to be a shortage of SR fanboy posts in most threads even if it's not related.

Who's the best provider? Sun-Rocket is the best!! wOOt1!!1

What's the difference between a virtual number and a 2nd number at [non-SR-provider]? Sun-Rocket gives you one free

Does Via-Talk have any specials? Sun rocket has 199/year pricing.

Vonage is a market leader but it's CEO has a shady past. Sun-Rocket is better because....It just is.

Argh.

Exactly, and for that reason I've been really suspicious of these users.

Poor planning on upgrades

SR needs to better plan and test network changes. I am able to receive calls just not make them.

Re: Poor planning on upgrades

No.. what we awaits is a post where someone suggests that if the FCC regulated VoIP providers like they do telcos, we wouldn't have this problem but then again, you wouldn't be paying so little for phone service (if you want to call it phone service). I can guarantee that if the FCC slapped SR with the same type of fines companies like AT&T (SBC), Verizon, Sprint and other "regulated" companies get hit with, your outages would be few and far between. And, they wouldn't be "working/upgrading" "services" in the middle of the week or day.. Save it till 2300-0700.. that's when other telcos do maintenance.

What problems?

I live in Pittsburgh and didn't even notice an outage until I read BBR. I got 1 phone call during the middle of the time, and checked the website. Didn't make outbound call though. No problem here...

BTW, Sunrocket is my SOLE phone, I dont use cell phones. Sunrocket has been better than my old VZ landline. Maybe there is some type of regional systems in place that broke domino style instead of a national outage. Kapeesh?

Enter the sunshine pumpers

I full well expect to see them flood this thread with their predictable mantra of how they never have problems (even during nationwide outages) as soon as this dies down, trying to pickup referral credits and what not. Its a shame that the moderators here appear naive to the Sunrocket scheme.

I have none of these issues with ATT CV. Why stay with them? Is saving 100 bucks a year worth your life when you need 911? Or when you need you security system to call the Police on break in? I know if I had Sunrocket it would have be gone along time ago.

COMEON PEOPLE--PLEASE GET A LIFE!! ID BET ALMOST EVERYONE OF YOU HAS A CELL PHONE--WHICH YOU PROBABLY USE MORE THAT YOUR HOME PHONE!! AT $199 YOU CANT GO WRONG--AS FAR AS 911--WELL CELL PHONES ARE FASTER AND UNLESS THE SYSTEM IS DOWN THEIR UPGRADED 911 SYSTEM HAS BEEN PROVEN TO BE BETTER AND MORE RELIABLE!

Re: Enter the sunshine pumpers

I've noticed the Sunshine pumper effect on AT and other forums as well. Interesting, since when you also look at SR's attempt to enter the blogging world.

I've used SR since October or so (review at: »www.digitalraindrop.com/ ··· unrocket ). It took over a month to get up and running, and I had some terrible experiences with their tech support, but in general the service works for me.

This is mostly because I rarely (if ever) use the phone on a given day. So at most I need a number where people can leave me messages while I'm out. I don't have a cell phone myself, but I think people who do might get the most mileage out of SR. Or people with kids who need a cheap line to keep the bills down.

I have faith in VOIP, though. I think the technology is going to mature with time, and become more reliable. We're already at the point where people are talking about VOIP Wifi handsets. When that happens (reliably) I'll consider a mobile phone unit, more for the geek value than for actual use.

I'm just hoping the major telcos don't swoop in and grab all the VOIP services. VOIP provides a means for smaller players to compete with telco monopolies...and they've successfully stamped out all competition in every other field they're active in.

1) You don't have to shout.
2) If that is truly what you believe, why do you have a landline at all?
3) If you are spending $199 on something that doesn't work and you don't need, yes, you are going wrong.
