First broadband TV network
AOL and Warner bros In2TV
(old news - 09:48AM Wednesday Mar 15 2006)
tags: TVIP
Apparently this mini-site was just launched, television.aol.com/in2tv. It offers about 30 old warner brothers TV series at the moment. In our attempt to try it out (first with firefox then with IE, both on a brand-new windows PC, then on an older trusty laptop) we could not get anything to play. Actually, no, eventually we did get the laptop with IE to provoke a window telling us we "were almost there" and to "upgrade windows media player". At that point, and merely to watch the Babylon 5 pilot, it just wasn't worth it. However, since "In2TV" boasts that it is the FIRST broadband TV network and has the LARGEST collection of free shows ANYWHERE ON THE WEB, we feel duty bound to report that it exists. press release. Oh, also, it apparently doesn't like Macs, either.
Update: to add a few more details, the shows are proceeded by commercial(s). They also offer a higher quality format suitable for full screen, if you have the downstream capacity. Nothing can be downloaded, evidently relying on windows media player 10 protection to ensure it is only streamed.

I just tried it on Firefox...

And it nicely prompted me that I needed to install the proper ActiveX control on Firefix.

We're sorry, this feature requires the Mozilla ActiveX Plugin. Click here to install.

Since when did Firefox start being compatible with ActiveX controls??

After allowing the install, about:plugins shows
Mozilla ActiveX control and plugin support
File name: npmozax.dll
Mozilla ActiveX control and plugin module
which seems to be this (which I've read about before, but briefly):

Google on the DLL name reveals more...

I guess the same way one uninstalls any Mozilla (Netscape, etc) plugin - remove it from the plugins directory!
In searching to see if there's a 'better' (automated) way, this was fun to see:

Re: I just tried it on Firefox...

AOL couldn't have screwed this up more if they tried!

"There is an ActiveX plugin available for Mozilla. However, installing it can cause many problems, including crashes and conflicts with installed plugins. It is generally recommended that you do not install this plugin, unless you are specifically instructed to do so or are using it to solve a specific problem (and configuring it accordingly). If you install it and have problems, the only support you will usually get is "Uninstall the ActiveX plugin". You have been warned. "

For some reason it doesn't work on any computer I try it on. I've downloaded a movie using HiQ, but that doesn't seem to work either. I'm wondering if this may have something to do with being located in Canada? Anyone else having problems playing video here?

Working for me...albeit slowly....

Tried loading up a Babylon 5 episode and it finally started playing after a couple of minutes. Got annoyed by the "shoop" noises that were played when the toolbar would display (too much Flash stuff!)

Took too long to start playing and I have 9 mb download cable....

Used IE 6.0 with Media Player 10. Has all recent patches installed. Got no errors messages...

AOL wants you to use the Hi-Q option for full screen video

If you look on the page that comes up when you pick a series to watch, instead of using the Macromedia Flash viewer, you can choose to use the Hi-Q full screen video option. It uses the kontiki P2P app to delver DVD quality video to your PC. This is the option I am sure they are pushing. Here is an explanation. But it needs Windows/XP, IE6 or later, WMP10, & activeX.

Less ads

Couldn't you just get these re-runs on bittorrent, and skip the DRM, commercials, and AOL hype?
Since they want to give them away free on the net, torrents would only be too hapy to oblige. This will keep dupes away from the aol-time-warner sucking machine, aimed at your wallet. Free isn't free, when ads permeate the thing.

what a joke.... my "computer" is just fine, but I get a screen saying that my 'computer' doesn't meet requirements. why do so many people think that IE is the only browser on earth? and further, why can't this work just as well on ANY operating system? Really getting sick of being forced to use Windows' phone home, ugly, clunky, generic "media" player software for so many things. Why shun linux/mac users?

It seems to work

I tried F-Troop. It played without any problems. I even tried the Hi-Q (with active X plugin) and that played just fine too. However, It doesn't seem to show where it's downloading the file too. Also, by default, it starts when windows starts.

I played about 25% of the low quality flash video. It had one commercial at the beginning. When I switched to the high quality active X video, I didn't see any commercials. I just started watching Wonder Woman in Hi-Q. I haven't seen any commercials yet.

P.S. This stuff is so corny. It's hard to believe that this was once 'prime-time.' ROFL.

of course there was no ads in the HQ version. the content provider probably gets paid via the scumware company that puts the activeX control out.

WM Recorder works with it

Just tested with WM Recorder 10 Pro. It worked fine recording the first episode of Bablyon 5. The software lets you space shift and time shift the content to a hard drive (fair use), so you can view the video if your internet connection is offline, or you are using a free wireless access point. No quality loss, but the quality isn't anything to write home about anyway.

Dude!! Perfect Strangers ROCKS!!!

Seriously though. I enjoyed that show way back when and it's nice to be able to watch a few episodes on demand. TV Land showed it a couple years ago for a few months and there was talk of a 'TV Favorites' release on DVD; however, as it's no longer shown on TV and the DVD release has been delayed indefinitely, I think it's awesome to be able to watch such a cute show again...

Oh well, to each their own...

Beware of AOL HI-Q and Contiki

Wonder how much the Telcos and Cable companies will bitch about Time Warner using peer to peer to distribute content .

I think this a great step forward in IPTV and p2p content distribution but be careful of the AOL HI-Qplugin that uses Kontikis p2p content distribution platform because Kontiki uses stealth install techniques to stay on your PC .

Here's more info on how Kontiki tries to embed itself on your PC and there's links to Kontiki removal tools .

As long as you can remove Kontiki in a safe manner it is pretty benign

Re: Works great for me.

Did anyone really read the fine print on this?

I understand the whole P2P filesharing thing but:
3. STORAGE & SHARING OF VIDEO ASSETS. You understand and agree that as part of the Service: (a) Video Assets that you request from an AOL website may be delivered to you from the computers of other participants in the Service, (b) such Video Assets will be stored on your personal computer until deleted by you or the automatic operation of the Plug-in, and (c) the Plug-in may access the Video Assets stored on your computer and reproduce portions of or an entire Video Asset in order to distribute it to others who request delivery of such Video Asset from an AOL website. The Plug-in can only deliver the Video Assets to and from your computer. No other content from your computer will be accessed or transferred by the Plug-in.

Everything you download and watch can, and probably will, waste your upload bandwith so other users can watch it from your hard drive, coincidentally increasing the strain on your PC hardware.

When that strain was only mp3 files and small stuff like that, it wasn't such a big deal, but try serving up an entire DVD quality video to some stranger thousands of miles away over your broadband upload connection. I don't know about most everyone else, but my upload is only 384, and I run a simple server on that already. Even our local cable company which advertises a max upload of 768 on their internet service would feel the strain of such file sharing. On a side note, I just want to point out that the 768 upload on cable is shared with everyone in your neighborhood, it is NOT dedicated to only your use, and plugging that upload bandwidth with a bunch of DVD quality videos could get your service disconnected. Couple that with the storage requirements for that size of video, and it's too much for me.

Then there is the issue with viruses and trojans. If there is a virus or trojan stored on someone else's pc that replicates and embeds into other files and you elect to watch a movie that is stored on that persons' pc, you open yourself up to the virus or trojan.

The idea sounds pretty cool, but I'll wait.

I will note that in the Oklahoma panhandle there is a company Called PTSI/PTCI that had offered TV over IP for well over 2 years now. It works fine there, because everything uses fiber-optic cable, and the community is small. Doing that over existing copper and cable broadband is just asking for disaster.

Not to worry friend, you are not going to be uploading the entire video file by yourself... just helping out with bits and pieces of that file.

Kinda like BT works, when you download a file, it's coming from MANY people and reassembled on your machine. when someone else requests that file, you help out where ever it's needed... not pounding the whole file!

I've used BT in the past as well, but I hope this AOLTV is not as bad as it sounds in the fine print. I will specify that that was the fine print for Hi-Q with the plug-in.
(c) the Plug-in may access the Video Assets stored on your computer and reproduce portions of or an entire Video Asset in order to distribute it to others who request delivery of such Video Asset from an AOL website.
For Firefox, I did have to use IETab to get it to work right.
