Vonage Shopping Itself Around?
Wall Street thinks so...
(old news - 05:27PM Thursday Mar 30 2006)
tags: VoIP
Vonage may be shopping itself around for potential buyers, reports this CNN/Money article. Because Vonage filed to go public nearly two months ago, but has yet to file any amended registration statements with the SEC, pundits believe something's afoot. The report suggests Vonage is "hemorrhaging money", and several analysts suggest a sale would be better for the company than an IPO at this juncture.

ebay

I'm sure they could auction it there! Maybe they could sell it to some techs that could figure it out.

"We're selling. Sick of the headaches! Sick of the outages! 911 doesn't work. Hey, merge with Sunrocket!!!!!!"

outages

ironically, I've never experienced a service outage in relation to Vonage. There was a time when BellSouth upgraded their database in the switch and it screwed up my Vonage for about 7 days, but that was a BellSouth issue.

However, I bet they are tired of the headaches and the bad press on 911 service (although mine works, because I called it and got my local 911 dispatch).

It would be funny if they merged with Sunrocket and and became VonRocket or Sunage.

Ditto for me. Any outages I've had on my Vonage service were always the fault of my Comcast cable modem crapping out. (well, not the modem itself per se, but rather the service beyond the modem) Vonage itself has never had any problems for me...

Re: ebay

That would be nice and maybe adopt some of their pricing. its taking me > 7 wks to transfer my number from vonage. At least i can use their line to call Japan for half the price of Vonage! Vonage lower you rates and I wouldn't have had to switch. Reliability is good for me and many other family/friends on various internet connections (Charter, Comcast, Verizon)

911 & VoIP

the 911 services work well for some of you because you have enhanced e-911 service which means your local PSAP (the place that takes 911 calls) will accept those calls.

Some places do not have a PSAP that will take those calls (why exactly this is vonages fault that they wont take them is beyond me).

my 911 always works because I understand that if I have a power outage or my internet service goes dark, I have NO 911 at all... as a result I have a POTS line through my local ILEC that I can alway make calls on (as well as fax through... ever tried faxing with VoIP? not always a good experience). or I (more commonly) I use my Cell phone. I never would think to call 911 from my VoIP phone and my Kids have been taught which phone to use if they need to call 911.
This really should be a non-issue. Its the customers responsibility to make sure they can make 911 calls, not a VoIP providers. (but thats just my own opinion)

Re: 911 & VoIP

Yep..and thats why I keep my POTS line as well. VoIP has a LONG way to go to become my primary phone line. If fact, VoIP isn't an issue for the moment as I don't subscribe.

Re: Hmm

If Vonage spent $176 million on advertising and only has 1.3 million customers that is $135.00 each just to acquire a customer paying $200 a year. And everybody thinks Verizon's FIOS is expensive? Verizon has cash, Vonage doesn't.

How about Rupert Murdoch. He is looking at Wimax for broadband. And now needs a phone service to offer his triple play. If you can't build it, just buy it.

SunRocket

Perhaps SunRocket could get a loan to fund a purchase? And then turn Vonage into SunRocket.

I could see that:

Dear Vonage Subscribers,

My name is [whoever] and I am the [x] of SunRocket, and we would like to welcome you as SunRocket subscribers.

You now have lower rates, more features, blah blah blah

You forgot to also add:
Along with lower rates, more features, you will lose failover, great call quality, and a wide range of adapters. You will pick up Rocketeers, numerous service "upgrades" that give you our new feature-SILENCE for a few hours, new Innomedia adapters that seem to be junk, fax "support" that we don't market because we have not been able to make it work, and a bright yellow annoying bird as a logo.

Did we mention our wonderful new CEO? She had a "great" track record at AOL for predicting future trends.

Re: SunRocket

SunRocket has great call quality.
And I'm sure they would add failover if they bought Vonage.
And they would probably flash the existing Vonage adapters for their service so the part about the InnoMedia adapters doesn't matter.
And fax support is fine for me and many other people. [corrected]
And with the upgrades it still goes down less often than my previous VoIP service.
And who cares about the "bright yellow annoying bird as a logo"? I actually like it..
And who signs up for a company based on the CEO?

Hmm, You seem to not reliase though for SOME reason, Sunrocket is the fastest growing VOIP service now. And for some reason they have over 98% of their customers with E911. You little Vonage thing couldnt even halfway comply. And SUnROcket is the only one of few that offer TRUE T.38 Support all the way through, and you can't talk about SunRocket because you have never even had it..... On the other hand, I have had Vonage before with NO E911, with SunRocket I had E911 the first week.

No one asked about growth. Please find me some documentation that states they are #1 in growth. No one talked about E911. It is much harder to implement it for 1.4 million people than it is for 80,000, so there goes your comment about my "little Vonage thing". So since you review every provider you have had, and have never reviewed OR mentioned your Vonage usage, I find it interesting that it comes up now.

Please GO_Fish in another pond.

Not to worry

Bell South will buy them, rename it, and sell it at outrageous prices (not including taxes and other tel co add ons) And then charge you extra on your internet for QOS for VOIP service.

Vonage and Cox

I said this months ago. Cox doesn't have the Voip infrastructure in it's major markets yet and this would be more about "MArket Penetration" of other cable and telecom companies than replacing their own hardware. Cox could serve Atlanta, DC, and other major cities with VOIP on it's fiber backbone.
