Martin: 'The U.S. is doing exceptionally well.'
(old news - 05:29PM Monday Apr 03 2006)
tags: competition · fcc · stats
Kevin Martin launches the FCC's report on the state of the broadband union by penning a piece for the Financial Times. "Given the geographic and demographic diversity of our nation, the US is doing exceptionally well," says Martin. "There is still more we can do to encourage competition and speed broadband deployment," says the FCC chief. His primary solution? "We must ensure that government regulations do not unreasonably stifle further investment and market entry," he opines.

The report, released yearly as part of the 1996 Telecom Act, is available via the FCC website.

Martin: outrageous lies, deception of public and fat checks

Given the geographic and demographic diversity of our nation, the US is doing exceptionally well,"
For God's sake, what kind of fuckin' bold-faced liar is this? I understand that he's the top dog of one of the most rotten corrupt agencies of the country but seriously: is there anybody out there who believes this shit???

The whole country is ridden by local monopolies, and despite the fact that over 80% of the US population live in metropolitan area, we have miserable broadband market conditions.

Re: Martin: outrageous lies, deception of public and fat checks

Do you like money? I sure as hell do. Why would I eat the cost of a high-priced installation, and roll-out fiber in a low-income community that I don't think can afford it? Verizon is just hitting the communities that can afford it and have somewhat of a demand for it. It's well-known that people on welfare have better things to worry about than whether to have dial-up or fios, or even have a computer at all. I find what they're doing usual business, they're trying to make money on an extremely high-priced investment. They can't do it all at once, they need to find some demand, and the demand for a 40 dollar product is usually in middle-to-high income areas. Face it, money is the way to go for corporations.

Re: Martin: outrageous lies, deception of public and fat checks

Low-income. Okay, let's put this in definition form. It usually means it's an area that has a high crime rate (usually), many people unemployed, and many people on welfare. This isn't racism (I never went against one race, get it right please), nor is it anything else. I'm stating that they don't roll out in communities that they don't think can afford it, using state/federal statistics I assume, just for that reason. If they can't afford the product, why roll it out for a few users. I'm sure they need a good chunk of a city signed up to start profiting from the high-priced install pricing/fiber roll-out costs.

I don't care if an area is low income they deserve the same services as those in affluent areas.. It's the cost of doing business.

Racism / discrimination is not a justifiable business practice.

Packet - it's nice to be affluent. Try it sometime. Pound sand with your racism comment. Or wait around and have some affirmative action committee design some kind of program to make you some kind of victim. You can have someone feel sorry for you then. Get somebody else to buy you the sand and then another somebody else to buy you something to pound it with.

This is the problem with the education system in this country.
Racism isn't a black and white thing. Racism isn't a green and blue thing. It's about discriminating against someone because of where they live, work, how they eat.
Get an education then come back and post some serious content on the matter.

Re: Martin: outrageous lies, deception of public and fat checks

Racism, as defined by wikipedia, is "Racism refers to a belief system that advocates discriminating against people based on a perceived or ascribed "race"". I never stated any kind of minority. I understand that Verizon needs to rollout all areas, they get this too. The problem here is, this isn't telephone over copper, where the infrastructure is there. They need to do all new fiber optic cables, which is a high-priced job. If the investors cannot expect a profit soon, or even at all, the whole project is gone. They need to do this in areas that will buy it, and even do a triple-play if they're lucky. They can't roll it out, and have low percentage of the town that CAN afford it, get it. Also, I do not see you complaining about users of DSL that are past 18,000 feet, and thus cannot get DSL. Large parts of low-income towns without a nearby DSLAM are like this. It's all business, and since FIOS isn't yet government regulated like telephone over copper, it's Verizon's call. I agree with them in the sense that they can make a very good profit in higher-income areas with more users to subscribe. It's not any type of racism (never mentioned race either), it's all about who can and cannot afford it. Verizon looks at statistics, just like I can, and I'm sure they decide where to roll out based on subscriber base. So go shove your racist accusations somewhere else, because it's sure as hell not wanted here.
Edit: Add in a few missed words, for clarity.

Exactly what about Insider's post was racial? Or are you (packetscan) suggesting that all individuals who live in low income areas are minorities? Or that all welfare recipients are minorities?

Seems to me that insider's post was very factual and made great business sense. But since it is so easy to interject the anti-bush propoganda you liberals like to spew without any sort of proof behind it, I guess we should all just eat the cost. Keep that tin foil hat handy, I think you are going to need it come November.

They're not getting screwed, I'm saying that the whole point of them rolling it out is for profit, it's simple business. If they can't expect a profit, then they need to roll out in areas where they can get a profit, so the lower-income areas will be able to have it, and thus they can have it done and at a slight loss.

Everyone is equal, doesn't mean businesses follow those rules. Everyone breaks rules, and inequality rules? Nobody has proven that low income neighborhoods don't get it first, because they always end up getting it sooner or later. That's the funny part here, Verizon gets their profit, everyone shuts up, etc, etc. Also, you said everyone in your area was poor (rant about how hard your parents were, for the record), not me.

I'm finding a few spots where I state how you called your own area poor (with that little rant about how nobody wired me up for DSL, then cable came to save the day!), and then how I said that you called yourself poor (by stating that your parents worked hard). But I don't see me outright calling your area or even you poor. Try again, please.

Wow, give me a sad story. So, if you're so poor, where'd you pull the money for premium BBR (something I don't even have?). Also, I'm pretty sure if you had cable television, then Opt Online didn't have to "wire" the whole town, the wires were there, they just had to light it up. Plus the fact that coax is a lot cheaper than fiber optic cabling, the same goes for installs (modem vs. ONT/BBU/free router). Fiber Optics costs more to deploy (someone tell me if I'm wrong, please). Nobody is going to feel sorry, and it's sad to say, the world is run on business. If Verizon wants a profit, they have to go somewhere where the residents can afford and pay for their high-end services (10 for dial-up vs. 40 for FIOS). It's a fact of life. There is no racism here, I'm not saying it sucks that you were poor or whatever, I just don't think that matters because business is money, and money is something most low-income cities don't have.

So I guess the Mega-corporations should have lowered their prices so that everyone would be able to have the service you enjoyed. Or better yet why not just give it out for free and let the people who actually have jobs pay for those who don't want to work for their luxuries. Oh wait now that you got yours, do you really care about the others?

Sounds like your parents have a real good work ethic and understood that is takes a lot of hard work to earn the things they perceive as important. I can respect that. Unfortunately it does not seem to have rubbed off on you. I still don't fault your parents some people will just never get it.

amen. all of the people screaming that enough isn't being done are city people. nobody in their right mind expects rollouts to some farmhouse, including the people who live there.

Is it really their fault?

start of political rant ---

I am hesitant to put blame where others are undoubtably too quick to place it. I think the problem here is that we, as Americans, have forgotten to act as checks on our government. Then, why is there less than steller innovation in America than in centuries past? We have not proactively demanded what we deserve, what we need, and what we should be expecting. Remember, we were (at once) the leaders in technology, but more recently, we have become too involved in more trivial aspects of uselessness.

The general public has become riddled with the stench of idiocy and care more about William Hung and American Idol than those who control our government and act illegally * cough * Jack Abramoff.

If you really want that one gigabit connection present in Asian countries, make it known to those who can actually act and make a difference. Don't bitch about corrupt politicians, etc; do something about it.

Re: Is it really their fault?

It is much more than that.

Customer service means nothing now. Instead of competition, companies look for domination. Why compete when you can buy out your competition.

Add to that the monopoly or duopoly of high speed internet service, you see how innovation is only as close as the next competitor. Comcast raises speeds, so far, only in areas with Verizon FIOS and for the same price. I live in an area that has 2 cable companies and the prices are better when I lived in a one cable company area.

It is much more than political and both sides have done "questionable" things.

The above observation, as made by GujuGuy, is really what this whole debate boils down to. The inane propaganda spewing forth from the FCC does not bother me one bit. They are a government funded organization run by people who are appointed by the politicians who are elected with the money that comes from corporate america. Had it contained anything but the exact opposite of reality I would have just assumed I was having an LSD flashback. What really blows my mind is the ever growing number of over fed and over entertained Joe and Jane Consumers out there who ingest said propaganda and think "Well, thats nice. I'm so tired of hearing nothing but bad news."

What the hell happened to the independent and rebellious baby boomer generation? And can you imagine what this country is going to look like when me and the rest of the gen x'ers get a house in the burbs and a little affluence of our own? We americans have turned apathy and willful ignorance into an art form at which we truly excel. The only ray of hope I can find is in the fact that my 13 year old hardly watches TV anymore cause he's too busy texting 8 different friends on his cell phone while surfing the net and playing an rpg online. I figure, hey, at least he is INTERACTING with other humans rather than vegetating in front of the idiot box. I just hope by the time his generation comes into its own that it's not too late...

What needs to be done

Just some thoughts on this.....
Corporate greed is killing us big time with BB. I would love to see things changed and Cable Co's pipes be opened up for competition and reselling. All this stupid fighting with Municipal BB...is ridicules. Whatever happened to the customer? Oh yeah, they got screwed at ridicules high costs. Compare our cost for BB to the other countries listed. There is simply no reason why BB costs what it does here...none at all. It should be 1/2 of what it is now ( at least as far as cable goes) TV I can see with the licensing fees paid out and what not...internet though?!?? No. Our speeds are also a joke compared to everyone else. Exception is FIOS, but people in Sweden are seeing speeds much greater than that and at a cheaper rate. Sweden for Godsakes! We should be ashamed...we invented the damn internet and apparently the ones REALLY capitalizing on it are the greedy corporations. The fighting over municipal networks has to end and it needs to be realized that it is just another player in the game. Speeds must be upped and cost needs to fall steeply. Plain and simple.

This data is released twice a year...

...and it's just late. This data is from FCC form 477, and is reported by companies twice a year. The last release was in July of 2005, and this set was actually expected to be released 4 months ago. Not sure why the delay, but this is the first reporting period under the new rules, where all companies must report, and also include info on speed of the connection.

Regardless, there's a stark finding. 15% of U.S. households have NO access to DSL or cable modem.

"... stifle further investment and market entry"?

I'm not entirely sure it could stifle it anymore without being called murderer.

Currently, it is not popular to be an RBOC or a prime cable operator. Any new competition will come from private enterprise in meek and thinly laid areas, or from municipal broadband initiatives.

BellSouth gave up and is allowing itself to be bought by SBC. No doubt the reaction to this will be Qwest becoming absorbed by Verizon, and Comcast/TWC finishing their Adelphia meal.

I see consolidation, delayed previous plans, but I see no leaping into the future, and consumers shouldn't see or expect much before 2007Q3. It isn't popular to be a network owner AND invest money. Its more internally-acceptable to lobby, lobby, and lobby against anyone else investing in your absence.
