1% of North Americans have tuned in
(old news - 08:40AM Friday Apr 07 2006)
tags: Video · stats · content
According to new North American data from Forrester research, only 1% of North Americans have actually listened to a podcast on a regular basis (Clickz News). A year ago, Forrester predicted that podcast use would grow to 12 million households by 2010. Will the deployment of faster broadband mean users will move right to video-podcasts? Or is the concept doomed to sit as a niche concept under the umbrella of mainstream web-video & media?

Thankfully I've never gotten hooked on the podcast hype. I use my iPod for music, not for listening to pre-recorded talk shows.

I think the podcast will be more popular once its common for car stereos to support USB sticks so you can play your podcasts without having to burn them to CD.

I know you can listen to podcasts on your PC of course, but I personally only listen to them while I am driving. Others may feel the same, or not.

Wow, I guess I'm the only person in the entire universe who regularly listens to podcasts. I download stuff from the BBC all the time and listen to it whenever my husband and I have to drive somewhere together because he likes opera and I like heavy metal. This way we can listen to cool interesting stuff without arguing over who gets to play their music. We listen to stuff like an hour talk on prime numbers so I guess that means we are geeks.

I also download video podcasts fairly regularly. I have downloaded episodes of "Monk" that I missed but mostly I download free video podcasts like "Windmills".

I only listen to one podcast......Battlestag Galactica

It's the only one I am interested in right now.

Basically, it's an audio commentary on the show (like on a DVD.)

It might be a niche concept unless there is some new idea behind it.

Re: I only listen to one podcast......Battlestag Galactica

This is exactly what podcasting is about. They are for specific audiences - content that would never be available for mass market media.

Neither is broadcasting dead, nor will it ever really be; however, narrowcasting fills voids for content that would not be profitable for major outlets. Just like fanzines are to magazines.

Sure some of them are garbage, but on the whole there are many that are very good for specific audiences. With the technology improving, individuals can produce high quality podcasts with little expense.

We will see podcasting grow.

Meh...

I might listen to podcasts... but that's if I'm ever away from my computer again. I think hell will freeze over before that happens again, the last time I went "AFK" monkeys flew out my butt.

Ah DUH!

I have never liked the term Podcast. I think it is more of a fad and does not convey exactly what it is. I would prefer the term On-demand Pre-Recorded Broadcast. Of course that is too long for most people to remember, or spell for that matter.

1% is still a lot

the population of north america is over 500,000,000. So that's over 5,000,000 people that are listening to podcasts on a regular basis. The podcasts I listen to regularly also has a lof of european, asian, and australian listeners.

Re: 1% is still a lot

I sure as hell hope you are kidding. There is under 300 million in the US & barely over 30 million in Canada. No other country in NA is above the poverty line far enough for the most people to have an internet connection.

Now, how many people in Canada & USA is on the internet? I think the total number will be between 1 & 2 million listening to PODcasts. You can add all the Hispanics you want, the total will not be over 2 million.

a Pod here, a Pod there..

we average between 7000 and a few hundred listeners per 'cast (varies, I guess, on the podcast's subject) though we are very narrowly focused on ours.

I do hope the trend reverses and more people find podcasts as these things are quite fun to make and all that..

no video = no interest

until they come up with video in podcasts, its really not a useful medium. esp with talk radio as an easy switch on in the car alternative.

Podcasts involve hooking up your ipod to your computer every day and moving stuff over. too much work for the lame offerings available (esp since ricky gervais podcasts ended). Until they have video so we can see shows on it, who cares....

not to mention my video i-pod is was useless upgrade without it too

You can do this. I use MythTV on my Linux box to record TV shows, then myth2ipod automatically transcodes the recordings to iPod compatible, then creates a podcast with the recordings on my webserver (accessible to my home LAN only). The wife subscribes to these and automatically downloads the shows to her video iPod over on her Windows computer.

But Podcasts out there on the general Internet? I've never really seen too much use for these, mostly because the content I've stumbled into doesn't interest me. I see some potential there however.

Podcasts are too new

It is all about the adoption rate. Few new things hit mass market adoption immediately. It is a premature study conclusion. For such little claimed adoption there is a lot of podcast devlopement going on in both the big corporate and investment houses.

Is it out there?

The only ones I know of are the syndicated ones charging for their content, and a few free ones I'm not interested in.

It never occurred to me to search out alternatives. Do they even exist? I'm probably a pretty average consumer in this regard.

To make this work, our mp3 players must interface easily with our car stereos/work radios. They could broadcast on a fm freq, to avoid one more accessory to carry around. Having a decent mp3 player in your cell (w/ fm broadcast) would make users search out something to play on it.

If your bluetooth, earset (or cell) had the right mic, any personal/car stereo becomes a conference phone accy.

I'm a thinker.

online compressed audio file

I find it obligatory to post the following in every thread where the word podcast is mentioned:

"Podcast: Someone had the revolutionary idea of taking a compressed audio file and putting it online. Yeah, doesn't sound so sexy when I describe it for what it is, does it you morons? It would have been a great idea if streaming audio wasn't already around for over a decade before the word "podcast" entered the lexicon. Man, I can't stand the word "lexicon." Talking about all these shitty words has made me start using shitty words. I'm so pissed, I just slammed the door shut on some kid's nuts."

Hold on

This is BS. It's a glass 1/2 full 1/2 empty analogy.

When were podcasts launched (in mass)? A year ago?

In that year (assuming a population of about 500m) about 5m people have adopted it? And they're predicting 12m by 2010?

That's entirely feasible. It's a 19% CAGR.

Forrester sucks.

Re: Hold on

I think we're talking much less than 5M. The article says
The growth of podcasting has so far fallen short of its great expectations, with only one percent of connected North Americans using them on a regular basis according to a new Forrester Research report
The figures, derived from a recent survey of 5,051 online consumers in North America
"connected" could mean several things. "online consumers" narrows it down even further.

Let's say for the sake of argument it's 1-3M people...

That is better than all but the very top syndicated radio hosts? Howard Stern is getting praise over 4 million Sirius subs and he has a HUGE name and nearly unlimited PR.

I think podcasting in a relatively short time getting a million or more listeners to the various things available is pretty impressive.

Personally I don't listen to podcasts regularly but I would if I had the time and an iPOD.

These types of new media take quite a bit of time to develop. Look at the TiVo for example...in 1999 no one would know what a DVR was, now they're like microwaves and people wonder how they got along without one. Or cable TV in the early 80's. Now who doesn't have DBS or CATV?

I think satellite radio and podcastings will become like that by 2010 as people become less willing to take the few choices available "live" and opt for TiVo-like "what I want when I want" audio which devices the Sirius S50 and programming like Podcasts offer.

For me it is all about "time", something I am in very short supply. Music is something you can turn on and off in very short segments - songs generally 2-3 min in length. Music can be in the be background and no disturb my concentration / work. While podcasts are generally a lot longer. The length of podcasts is what makes it hard for me to "tune in". Podcast (talking narative) seem to require me to pay attention - so I can't listen to them when I am trying to concentrate or work on a project.

I do not own an Ipod. I listen to the very rare podcast through my computer.

Yes, "podcast" is just a stupid empty buzzword.

All a podcast is a bit of prerecorded audio content released in any digital format. I think it is a dumb term and I'm glad that nobody cares about them.

Re: Dr. Demento

A Podcast is merely a digital file (audio or video) that a user can consume and find by subscribing to a particular "channel".

That is it.

It has nothing to do with iPods or iPod videos or anything like that.

You don't even need an iPod to consume a podcast.

It has nothing to do with live broadcast or broadcasting at all.

The most interesting thing about "Podcast" is the ability to subscribe to a particular channel and get updated files for consumption.
