Direct Revenue Exposed
Court document illuminate threats, history
For years we have discussed the spyware outfit Direct Revenue, particularly hated of late because of their "Aurora" evilware. Now with the new lawsuit by New York AG Eliot Spitzer, court documents are making it apparent just how shady the operation actually is. Forum regular and spyware researcher Ben Edelman is offering up some of these documents over at his website, and many of them are quite damning. Constant name changes, attempts to intimidate critics, and endless efforts to dodge detection by spyware vendors. Fascinating reading if you've followed this outfit closely.

That's the way to do it...

This is one way we can get rid of those pesky spyware pests. We have got to slap those b1tches down with the fury of a billion lawsuits.

It looks like the AG from NY is the most active prosecutor in the country going after the internet scum. It is too bad that more state and federal prosecutors, who have laws that they SHOULD be enforcing but aren't, have ignored the internet criminals. Sure, murderers and rapists and robbers come first, but these white collar criminals shouldn't be totally ignored like many law enforcement departments are doing.

You're right, but I wonder if it's because they simply don't understand what the WCC are actually doing?

Can you spell "g-o-v-e-r-n-o-r"?

It's widely acknowledged here in NY that Spitzer is doing this ONLY to get free publicity for an anticipated race for the Governor's office. So while there may be a temporary benefit, I doubt he's committed to the idea of eradicating spyware from the planet longterm.

Well I'll take his grandstanding if it throws a monkey wrench into the spyware (or RIAA) machine. He'd have my vote, but I live in the next state over.

Spitzer has been going doing this with many other crimes also. Not just internet related crime. Spitzer has been "Grandstanding" for many years. He has always been tough on crime.
I do not endorse him or not endorse him. Doesn't matter to me if he is running or not. If he manages to get rid of a few spammers great!

If grandstanding is what it takes to go after crime then I would vote him supreme leader.

I agree with others that Spitzer is motivated to get publicity and we'll gladly accept it.

If you look back at Eliot Spitzers years at AG you'll see he hasn't been shy of publicity but he's also done more for NY consumers than past AG's. He's one of the more technical savvy candidate's for any high office. With a few exceptions NY has been first in many attacks on Spammers, Microsoft Antitrust, taking AOL to court for its cancellation practices and many other online consumer issues.

This won't hurt but he's already been way ahead in the polls. I doubt most voters in the state keep up on this stuff like we all do.

There was a nice article about the team behind this effort. I posted a copy of it at

Eliott Spitzer is ze Man

He doesn't care about "corporations." Guilt is guilt to him. And, he wins. New York: meet your next Governor!

Re: Eliott Spitzer is ze Man

Okay, so maybe he is doing it just to get elected. But then again, I'm not from New York, so I have nothing invested in it one way or the other.

To this specific filing, however, I will say: GO GET 'EM!

At least it should be one less sleazeware purveyor out there. Something to be positive about, at least.

So when I'm in their neighborhood next week, what would be a good article to print out and put on the front door of their office building to let their neighbors know what they're up to?

Yeah, but "We have got to slap those b1tches down with the fury of a billion lawsuits." Sounds so much cooler than, "We have got to slap those b1tches down with the fury of a lawsuit." :P

lawsuit

I would hope that the lawsuit includes not just them, but every one of their investors and every company they have ever advertised for. If there was no money in it for them, they would not be where they are at in the first place.

I had to deal with Aurora via rootkit before there was any info about rootkits.

I've been inspired.

Highlight documents

Several folks have contacted me to say the documents are overwhelming, even with my summaries. That's no surprise, I guess -- 165 separate exhibits, more than a thousand pages.

So I put together a summary of the documents and facts I consider most notable. »www.benedelman.org/news/ ··· 6-1.html
