EVDO Third Gen: 14Mbps-73Mbps
Revision B, commercialization within two years
by Karl Bode Monday 10-Apr-2006 tags: wireless · bandwidth
Qualcomm says the third generation (of the third generation) wireless EV-DO tech - Revision B - will see professional speeds of 73Mbps, with consumer speeds up to 14Mbps. Commercial deployment of this gear should happen within two years insists the company. EV-DO Revision A, set to see deployment late this year and early next, offers burst speeds up to 3Mbps. Of course there's also plans for revision C, which could offer speeds as high as 200Mbps. Qualcomm also tinkers with HSDPA, and plans on releasing a Wimax challenger based somewhat on Flarion's FlashOFDM technology.

Only if it is affordable and truly "unlimited"

EVDO looks good NOW, but just like any other CDMA carrier - the more users; the less each user gets....

meh

I'll believe these speeds when I see these speeds... Every ISP bloats everything.

They are real, they just left out you need to be standing next their tower to get those speeds.

Let's not forget our old friend latency either ...
If it's still 300+ ms then who cares?

Re: meh

I'm pretty sure Rev A boasts sub 100ms latency.

Speeds will happen .... EVENTUALLY

All these types of press releases say what is coming, but they also overpromise how SOON they will happen. These speeds are certainly possible, but in 2 years? Never happen. It takes at least 5 years to roll out widespread upgrades.

Because your conversations are boring!

In all seriousness have you gone and opened up a network ticket? Also you know of anyone else experiencing the same problem in your area?

And they will! They shouldn't use the word "unlimited" if they don't really mean it.

Interesting

It wont see deployment till late this year, but they are allready "planning" revision C, which should be out in two years. Allready preparing the telco "upgrade" gravy train (for them, equipment wise) on our backs. Why not just wait till revision C? Because it wont be as profitable.

A new EVDO Speed announced....yawn!

A new financial quarter brings more PR releases on future deployments.

When I see a press release from a carrier, not a manufacturer, with a deployment schedule for Revision A or B...I will believe it.

Fiber to the cell sites?

Here is a really good one. Why bother with running fiber to the premises or curb like Verizon and AT&T. Just run fiber to the cell sites and jump right into Rev. C and sell people wireless cards. As long as the spectrum don't run out!
