Slower intro tier sees price-hike
(old news - 03:03PM Tuesday Apr 18 2006)
tags: dsl · prices
User Oliphant writes in: "Just noticed Verizon has raised the price of it's budget DSL 768/128 plan from the $14.95 budget rate to $17.95, a 20% hike." The Verizon website confirms. The one-year introductory offer has been incredibly popular; so much so that Verizon had a difficult time filling orders, claiming that equipment shortages at CO's packed to capacity caused the backlog. The deal was a large reason the telco added a record 613,000 new subscribers in Q4 '05.

Re: Verizon DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ONNNNNN

And VZ (viz FIOS) offers 15/2 for $45...so the F what? Some users don't have a need for speed. This tier is specifically aimed at dialup users.

And even for that price, it's still a good deal. Sadly, it has caused me speed issues in my area with my 3/768 plan.

If they have more people than they can add at one time and maintain advertised speeds, then it makes sense to increase the price and slow down the addition of new users.

AT&T's Pro package (3.0/512) is $17.99.

That makes me very happy the AT&T is in my area.

Re: And AT&T's Pro..

AT&T is cheaper because the price is being subsidized by the NSA.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Expect that price to be $24.95 when BellSouth is merged.

Yea.. it's still FAR less and much faster than the price of dial up just a few years ago. I'd say it's still a good deal.

@linkline.com

Well them raising prices only does one thing makes the little ISP who offers it at a lower price shine. They are raising prices because they need to pay for more DSLAM's and more lines. there are still a few companies who started this trend that will continue to keep them going and keep pushing they lower prices and beef up there networks to keep up. little guy is taking the fight right to them for once.

My GTE (pre-Verizon) 768/128 was $49.95 a Mo. Stayed that way for quite awhile after the Bell Atlantic, GTE merger.

Remember when AOL went from hourly billing to 19.95 unlimited no one could log on. Sounds like the same type of problem. I have 2 extra verizon westell modems/wireless routers if anyone wants send me a PM.

If you read the disclaimer it states

For one year commitment plan, if service is cancelled between months 2 and 12, a $79 early termination fee applies. $34.95 monthly rate applies for months 2-12. At the end of the one-year commitment period, your rate will increase to the then current month-to-month rate.

The month-to-month rate showed up as $37.95/mo.

Has anyone had their rate increase after one year yet? If you complain about the rate increase or threaten to switch to one of their competitors, I think they'll lock you at the same rate for another year.

What about all that capacitiy and DSLAM equipment acquired in the MCI buy-out? Not enough capacity or equipment my ass!

They took my, and thousands of others, rock solid direct ATM connection with true static IP away, and forced me onto Telco's crappy PPP-OE service.

I guess they want the forked over consumers to pay for the acquisition, and FIOS to boot.

Ah, the world according to Telco's twisted whiney perspective...oh my gosh, my golly, how do they go on?

Re: Complete bushwah!

Yeah..try not being able to get ANY DSL service even though Verizon e-mails me and calls me to get me to sign up for it. All technical specs are correct, and the VZ field engineers have been here to confirm that IS available. I order it..they take my order..then they ship that damn modem THEN they tell me that it's not available. I have 7 boxes with modems in them. Why do they send out that stupid modem before "finding out" that the service is unavailable? THEN Verizon tells me that they won't take any more orders from me because "I cancelled too many standing DSL orders"

Frankly I think it's to keep me using my current configuration..a fractional T1 line at the ripe price of 650.00 a month! I could use all 7 of those modems with a dedicated DSL line for each one of them and still have 300 bucks left over every month.

At that point...

Is there any spare muni fiber that you can lease? I'm running 20/20 over fiber. 1 hop from the ISP's NOC and 2 from the main Philly POP for all of the major backbone providers for only $1000.

Re: Complete bushwah!

I'm starting to think I'm getting the same treatment from Verizon.

I ordered DSL about 2 weeks ago. They shipped me the modem and stuff, then pushed my line ready date back. Now my date is "pending".

Question for ya. Did they charge you the $20 for shipping the useless box to you, and if they did, how did you get your $20 back?

expectpricehikes

@verizon.net

Its a sad but true testament to the war on terror...
$3/gallon of gas. This will filter down into even the smallest cost services like dsl. A universal excuse to raise the price. Its still a good value but if they had any "backbone" they'd drop the POTS telephone line bundle requirement. DSL is dirt cheap to install now, the only thing I would keep is the 1 year to get a router/dslmodem for free (keeps) otherwise its a penatly when not returned, yada yada yada. I've got my westell gathering dust, a testament to the pre-fios days.

Verizon, is realizing that it needs to make a profit. Intro rates on DSL are fine. But Any Sub 20.00 package is good enough for most users and DSL helps end Dial-up.
Dial up is just way to costly even for companies to deploy. Dialup is only to be used for Laptops as far as IM concerned for people on the road.

I think this is all very healthy. Since the Internet is more of a utility now than ever before.

I think everyone has realized that we have reached the end of dial-up. I don't know what the stats are..But I think that by 2007, everyone that can get broadband will have it. I just don't see much more growth here..

Extremely popular service, verizon has to make money somehow. $3 ain't really anything. I'm it will still lore tons of dialup users to 768k dsl.

I ordered the $15/mo DSL a couple weeks ago. The equipment has arrived and I have activated the account but I have not hooked it up to my router. I still have my faster cable for another week or so. After I drop my cable i will be solely on the DSL which i agreed to a 1 year contract at $15/mo. Just wondering MY price will be effected or just new subscribers from now on?

Pooch38

@sprint-hsd.net

Sprint, which has been heretofore one of the highest priced for DSL has recently, without any fanfare, reduced their prices as follows for existing customers:
1.5 now 24.95, 3.0 now 29.95 and 5.0 now 39.95.

This of course is with the "packages" program but still makes them competitive with SBC-ATT in my neck of the woods.

Two words...

Supply / Demand

vzinfo

@verizon.net

#1- Verizon advertised for about a month that the 14.95 DSL would be going away on April 14, 2006. It was supposed to go away completely and just be the original $29.95 plan but they decided they could probably still make money off the 768K dsl and so now they kept it and raised the price to $17.99. Anyone in the Verizon footprint should have heard or seen the ads advising that April 14th was last day to sign up for 14.95 DSL.

#2- If you signed up for the $14.95 DSL you keep that price, the price increase is for new subscribers only.

#3- Even the new price point is good to entice dial-up users, and the extra $3 helps pay for a couple of FiOS installs.

Long Awaited Entry Level Offering
Not that I'm shilling for any cable co here, but it is apparent that consumers are seeing lower price tiers as a response to VZ competition for the hearts and minds of the price conscious dialup user.

Here in Bright House Networks territory, they finally woke up to the fact that they were losing the battle to convert dialup users. At long last, they have introduced a $14.95/mo Road Runner 768/128 product.

Armstrong Cable, a smaller cable co in OH and PA, that competes with VZ ADSL, has done the same thing.

And, oddly enough, it's a successful product. For example: My 80 year old father thinks his $15/mo VZ ADSL line is just great and it costs him no more than his previous dialup account. But on his fixed income, he'd not willing pay a nickel more for than that for it, he'll go back to dialup at $10/mo first.

IMO VZ and the cable co's will continue to offer low speed broadband at price points below $20/mo until they have migrated as many dial up users as they can find.
