story category Skype: 100 Million Users
In just 2.5 years
(old news - 12:01PM Friday Apr 28 2006)
tags: VoIP · software
Skype this morning announced that the company now has more than 100 million registered users of its software, in just two and a half years time. "Skype has grown in leaps and bounds by making it simple for anyone across the world with an Internet connection to do something they could not do before - talk for as long as they like, to whoever they like for no cost," says CEO Niklas Zennstrom. Obviously there's some debate over whether or not that 100m number is accurate.

Which is it?

"100k number is accurate?"

Alright, is it 100k or 100 million? Now, you've got me confused!

100 million... I'd have a hard time believing that!

Re: Which is it?

Subtract 1 from whatever the real number is, I had an old account and forgot what the password was.

On an average day whenever I connect to skype it indicates over 4.5 million users online at any given moment, so I think it's safe to assume 100K is a typo.

BTW, personally I give skype a thumbs up. It runs under Linux and now my computer to computer chats are free of charge with out the ils server BS and I can dial virtually any landline in the civilized world and chat away for under $0.024 CDN per minute. And sound quality is excellent. Why sign up for Voip when skype offers a truly pay as you go solution?

numbers

it does seem high but it's believable. I was traveling this winter around Asia and every internet cafe there were 10 people with headsets on. there are tons of internet cafes everywhere. phone service in Europe has always been very expensive. I bet just about every European uses this.

Re: numbers

I live in a country with a state controlled phone company. Long distance charges are high and therefore Skype is popular. I'm posting, however, to correct the misnomer that international long distance is expensive in Europe. In most countries in Europe, the rate is competitive to the US. My friend in France calls the US for free as part of her long distance plan from Free. My friend in Germany calls the US for 1 euro cent a minute. My friend in the UK pays a 2p (four US cents) connection fee to call the US and can talk for as long as he wants. These fees seem competive to the US.

Skype

I use and like it. I betcha the telco companies aren't too happy about the competition it presents. Especially overseas.

How many actually connect?

I wonder how many people out of their 100 million actually connect regularly?

Re: How many actually connect?

I got off that train -- when I realized it depends on my broadband link to act as a router/server. No thanks.

Re: How many actually connect?

They probably do like the firefox folks do and count every download as a new user, not taking into account all the people who re-download the application.

Well they base their numbers on the number of installed/registered users. Frankly once I tried Skype I could never see a reason to not use it. It saves me a small fortune in long distance every month. It has no spyware, adware or nagware and it really doesn't use up a whole lot of resources. As for the P2P aspect of Skype, it will only use your machine and connection as a supernode if you allow it to. While Skype is amazingly adept at getting around a firewall when it has to, it won't turn your machine into a supernode unless you open the ports it needs. Otherwise you can be the equivalent of a P2P leecher with Skype simply by blocking it with your firewall while it's running.

I'm on

I just had to load it last week to chat with my mother. She's deaf and can barely type so she talks and I reply in the chat box. Not thrilled about having it on my system, but if it keeps my mother from becoming a recluse, I'll use it.

Re: I'm on

I just installed it for the first time this week and made a PC call to an overseas mobile number. It cost .07 cents/min and was very clear. My friend says everyone uses it over there so I wouldnt doubt the numbers.
