45Mbps Symmetrical
Multiband in Marina del Ray
(old news - 02:28PM Friday Apr 28 2006)
tags: wireless · bandwidth
About 2,500 condos and apartments in the Los Angeles suburb of Marina del Ray, California, will soon get 45Mbps symmetrical broadband connections for between $24.95 and $34.95 per month, reports ExtremeTech. The service is being offered by Multiband, which uses a microwave dish receiver mounted on each building, and is bundled with DirecTV satellite service. While the prices are low, the company says they're "considering a tiered pricing model to increase their revenue".

I hope it was clear to everyone that the 45mbs symetrical was to each condo/apartment building and not to each user. So some subset of users(how ever many is in each separate building) SHARE that T3 microwave link. Not that that isn't going to deliver them great service. It just isn't what the headline seems to imply.

The company uses a microwave dish receiver mounted on each building, which can be connected to more traditional Ethernet cabling to route the high-speed Internet service to invididual units

Re: One please.

Seems muddy in the article. If you're the only subscriber, it looks like you'll get some nice speed, until they get more subscribers:

I'm here!

But not in one of those "people piles" they are servicing. Most of the complexes they serve have at least 1000 units minimum, perhaps 1500-2000 people.

Also important to know, usually when a complex cuts a deal like that, the cost is usually built into the rent. If you want your own DSL, you wind up paying twice.

I also had a WISP here a few years ago. Good service, 3Mb/3Mb up until another antenna from another provider popped up in the line of sight.

I am not downloading massive mp3's or streaming video, so a low-end DSL $14/Mo. account is what I switched to, and no need to pay a cent more.

For How Long?

I wonder how long that will last.

it's fully symmetrical even though it's shared! Really, for whatever it costs, I'd bet that certain times of day you could get almost that full speed if it's properly switched.

What do you think? Well, lets crunch some numbers. Cable internet provides 38Mbps on a 6Mhz downstream channel. Now thats not 45Mbps, but in comparison, a cable node provisioned at 6Mbps downstream is likely to have slower than advertised speeds when 250+ people occupy that node. Therefore, if these buildings have 1000 tennants in each building, with a dish providing 45Mbps on each building, you will probably have latency from hell, and 1Mbps symetrical. Hopefully I'm wrong though

Great - But.......

Here's the thing... 2,400 condos? People complain on here that news about FIOS, which is available to millions of people isn't "news" since it isn't available to THEM. I wonder if the same people will be bitching about this since it only services 2,400 people.

Probably not. But anyway, good for them! It's good to see someone getting a glimpse of the light.

but seriously..
microwave dish receiver, does that mean it's coming from the same satellite as tv(ie huge ping times/lag)?

Re: that's cool

A friend has a WISP, he gets 10/10 from it now(has for some time now).

I could definately handle 10/10! 45/45? Yeah, I would suffer with it...

it says this in the article:
"adjunct to DirectTV" which could mean that it's either part of their dishes, but I really doubt it. I think (hope) they mean terrestrial based microwave link (would they not have said sat. link???) which would make more sense. regular microwave links don't have nearly as much latency as a sat. links.

I wonder though, if these condo's are now "locked in" to this service provider and would not be able to get, say fios, or a faster cable deal (eventually).

Re: that's cool

Doesn't realy matter if they can keep the speed up with FIOS. Yeah, it's a shared link technology in a M.U.D., but it's far faster than what you can get with a standard ISP, (Especally upload speed.) They just need to keep their speed equivalent or higher to any FIOS deployments in the area, and at a lower price.

My question too. Is this synchronous as well as symetrical?

45 Mbps symetrical shared is still good

Cable Modems running on 256QAM downstream see 38.8 Mbps shared. Upstreams running on 16QAM only see 10 Mbps shared. It works because not everyone is constantly uploading/downloading at the same time. 45 Mbps symmetrical is faster than Cable, and even though its shared it should still be faster, unlike Cables asymmetrical architecture.

Re: 45 Mbps symetrical shared is still good

It isn't even shared by as many people as a cable node, probably only a fraction of the number. If they let you use the full pipe then at night you could probably get the full speeds.

Though remember that you can download at 45 someone has to be able to send you the data at the same speed to get full results. The backbone isnt there yet you still wont see those speeds, but it is still a good deal.

microwave is scaleable

the cool thing about microwave is that it is easy to order up more bandwidth. we have microwave at work (7mb symmetric) and are able to get up too 100mb symmetric in about and hour just by placing a phone call.

Yeah right

45mbps shared, the likelyhood of even being able to get 20% of that speed is slim, better hope other people are not running servers.

latency...?

will there be any high latency though...?

Managed Switches & Caps?

I wonder about the latency, of course. Though I also wonder if they will be capping the speeds to residents via managed switches. Such as, everyone only getting 1mbps/1mbps. If that is the case, I would still be happy with a symmetrical 1mbps connection for those prices.

is wireless right?

Wouldnt a OC-x fed ADSL2+/VDSL/VDSL2 DSLAM for the enitire development (from the condo, SBC doesnt care i guess) be much better speed wise and future growth? The wirelengths shud be very short ideal for DSL technology or HPNA.

Technology is so slow.
From 300 baud to 1200 baud
56k to 64k
64k to 128k
DSL 1.5 to 3.0
3.0 to 6.0
OH god we're playing some kind of games here aren't we?
offer something with a sound advice then milk the public with it.
i call this experimentation technology..
when will we see 10/10, 20/20 for all users???
Asymmetrical needs to die..
would love 1.5/1.5
3.0/3.0
6.0/6.0

download is no more important then upload
that's like saying male should be dominant over female.

people just dont understand how they're being fleeced with broadband asymmetrical bs.
It isn't meant to let you share file between joe a and joe b
but to leech from server only like a T1 or T3 connection from university.
