As mentioned, the Wireless Silicon Valley Task Force has released a Request for Proposal for the development of a multi-use, high-speed, wireless data network that will cover 1,500 square miles and reach 2.4 million people. According to Mercury News, Google will not be bidding on the project, but AT&T will. AT&T also recently bid on a Wi-Fi project being planned for Grand Rapids, Michigan. AT&T feels muni-Fi will be a "good complement" to its other service offerings.
Instead of fighting in court AT&T is going to join in. I wonder what the other telco's are going to think of this. I can see other areas such as in Wyoming where you have small communities, Burns, Hillsdale, Albin, Eggbert, etc with each have small populations but are geographically close together so a Wifi system would be a good choice. Unfortunately this is in Qwest, we sue you, land so the chance of anyone coming in to do this are slim-to-none.
Like all business - fight off competition (especially one that would directly erode your bottom line). In this case, the only way to fight off competition was to join in on the Muni WiFi, and still keep the market business. The main difference is that AT&T won't be dictating the Muni WiFi, but providing service for it.
Considering what a joke Project Lightspeed is, do you really think this won't be a joke too?
The one thing about this area there are enough people who are movers and shakers in technology who live there so the wool can not be pulled over their eyes. -- Low voltage Tech's are wimps, Real tech's use 45 pound filament transformers, plate voltages no less then 2400 volts with at least 10 amp's lighting 8877 triodes...BPL I'm coming to get you.
I think Google is passing on this because they are beginning to see what a potential loser the business is as they fight thru all the bureaucracy and special interest groups in SF. They may be figuring out they may not actually make any money. Google can afford some losses in SF for the PR value, but they sure aren't going to keep throwing money at something that loses money. -- -- Join Red Room Forum BLOG tkjunkmail.blogspot.com My Web Page
