AT&T U-Verse Kinks
Bugs being worked out ahead of June expansion
by Karl Bode Tuesday 02-May-2006 tags: Video · Fiber · business · telco
Yesterday we chatted with an AT&T rep who insisted all was well with AT&T's "Project Lightspeed", despite some analyst proclamations they were stalling to figure out how to increase speeds. Light Reading today quotes anonymous hardware vendors that state the U-Verse (AT&T's name for their IPTV) service still has kinks, but that they're working on "forward error correction" technology to resolve some alleged packet-loss related image quality issues. AT&T will expand the San Antonio trial in June, and expand the IPTV service to 15-20 markets by year's end.

Take your time AT&T

Go ahead and take your time AT&T, as Time Warner and Cox Cable have you already licked here in San Diego.

Re: Take your time AT&T

Well, there's no rush here in Valencia, although I have seen A LOT of SBC trucks in the area over the past couple of months, and according to SBC/AT&T tech (had to test my line and degrade my service), they're doing fiber on Lyons Ave in Newhall, CA.

Unless they can offer as good of a deal as DirecTv, I don't see them getting any real customers.

Comcast (Valencia/Castaic) = $$$
DirecTv = good value
SBC/AT&T = ???

I use a combo - SBC/AT&T phone lines + DSL Extreme DSL. Comcast is too expensive. There are MANY Dish / DirecTv roof tops in my neighborhood.

Me too. I don't know what they're doing, but there's been a guy sitting at a computer chair pulled up to a B-Box for hours on end (going on and off for several days now) near my place.

You know what "forward error correction" means? It means they're going to need more bandwidth than they anticipated to deliver the data reliably. Oops. I think at a minimum they're going to need to dedicate one 24mbps line to video alone, and offer data on a separate line (or just bond two together).

IPTV improving but a long way to go yet

All the telcos looking to use IPTV to deliver live video content(a la cable TV) still have a way to go yet. They are making decent progress but are probably still several years away yet. Verizon's Fios is using cable technology to deliver their live video and only use IPTV for VOD offerings. But they better hurry, because cable companies are grabbing voice customers much faster than the telcos are grabbing live video customers.

Light Speed?

As most people in Illinois forget, but Geneva is a "Home Rule" town. They can make laws work in their favor for the betterment of the community.

Have another cup of coffee, and think about it again, not that things are any better here in San Diego.

Re: Light Speed?

How does AT & T plan to get around the local franchise issue. I am sure when it starts to roll out video services in markets later this year, it will face lawsuits left and right and they will be slapped with "buildout suspensions" by state courts.

Re: Light Speed?

Our city (San Ramon) just struck a deal with ATT:

Let's see how long will it take for ATT to deliver.

For the record, Geneva is currently NOT a home rule community.
