| DRM I read in either the St. Paul Pioneer Press or the Star Tribune (sorry, it was a long day at work, so I don't remember) that they will let you burn it to a "backup DVD," but it can only be viewed on the computer that made the DVD, not a stand-alone DVD player, or another computer.
They also said they were going to price the downloads around the same price as a normal DVD.
Not much progress there, eh? -- "Don't argue with stupid people; they will beat you with experience."

Edit: Could be wrong, trying to find out now. Edit: Found it, it was yesterday morning's broadband bytes. In the article it says it wont be able to be burned to a DVD unless something has changed. »news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060509/en_···bmNhdA--

| There's a way around this. Simply build a HTPC (Home Theater PC) and install Windows Media Center. D/L it to THAT PC, and you're set. With the recent introduction of perpendecular hard drives by Seagate at 750GB, with 960GB coming fairly soon. That'll hold a lot of movies. -- We want the Republicans out of our bedroom and the Democrats out of our wallet and both out of our First and Second Amendment rights." - Alan Nathan | |

| still not serious entertainment industry is still not serious about selling movies.
Every online download service that has been announced has been the same cost (or more!) for less product, has a difficult to use interface and has anti-consumer DRM. Why on earth would someone purchase a download when they can't watch it on their TV, it takes longer to download than going up to the corner and buying the DVD, contains none of the extras on the DVD and has even more restrictive DRM than the DVD?
After a period of poor sales, Warner will probably declare that piracy is killing the market for paid downloads and use this "failed" effort as a reason congress should pass even more draconian laws to punish "piracy".

| Why not just time limited downloads and skip the DRM crap? I think most would be happy spending a buck or 2 on a movie that was just time limited, let you burn it to DVD with same time limit, etc. The movie expires say in 6 months regardless who has it or whatever.
Paying cheap price for a time limit is reasonable, but restricting its use more than that is not. All imo of course..

While it may happen by subterfuge, it aint gonna happen if even the average user knows about it. And they obviously have still not figured out that as yet there is no way to control or monitor a system like Bit Torrent... but they will.

| Not so worried about DRM/Other restrictions. Where there are Geeks there are Cracks, whatever they do to restrict the content, someone will find a way to crack it off and set the content Free.
They should just drop the DRM and other crap from the beginning, it WILL be defeated so ultimately its useless and a waste of time and Energy.

what on earth is this? some kind of sick joke?
I can get far more value from a used dvd, thanks but no thanks.
oh, and have these people heard of Vongo?
laptop + s-video/audio = tv viewing...
sure, can't burn it, but the quality isn't dvd yet anyway.
Hopefully someday these movie people will wise up to an e-music type service, no drm, decent quality, cheap price = happy customer.
that, or another subscription type service like Vongo or Rhapsody (for music). right now, I'll keep Vongo for a bit.
if BT wants my business, they're gonna have to try a "bit" harder than that! Surely this news will not create a "torrential" downfall of customers suddenly wishing for an inferior product with further limitations than can be had for the price of a used disc.

Why some pay others to get rid of spyware is beyond me. I guess the whole ideas is to annoy people and if ya wanna it removed temporarily, ya gotta pay them.

| I bet that in order to have this overpriced download "at your convenience, you will be required to play back the title with proprietary software (which will have some annoying features that cannot be configured) and will have to surrender all sorts of personal data to "third parties" EVERY time you want to play the title. Yeah AND the movie will require an internet connection to authenticate for playing, thereby making portable playback a hideous hassle. | |
