As NPR explores this morning, many utilities are exploring broadband over powerline (BPL) as a technology used to monitor their networks first and foremost; then as a residential broadband option second. The piece notes that the Pittsburgh suburb of Monroeville is getting service by Duquesne Broadband, a trial that started last year. The NPR report doesn't even mention the word "interference" (granted the Pittsburgh operation uses wireless). Sam Spencer of the "BPL Today" newsletter tells NPR that this year could finally be the year for BPL. Of course as we've mentioned, the industry thought 2005 was "the year."

BPL - Bypass Power Lines

The acronym BPL will be changing its meaning from Broadband over Power Lines to Bypass Power Lines if it doesn't get any momentum soon. Other broadband options, especially wireless 3/4G and Wimax will soon make BPL a non-starter almost everywhere.

Why be specific

that just heightens expectations. I say just go with two thousand'ish (2000'ish). That way you have a whole century to actually complete your intended goal.

it will be up the day before the last day before god comes back then all the believer that say bpl will not work will go heaven and not have to deal with bpl and the greedy dumb asses who sayed we need it now will have there bpl and other things they wanted. lol just messing around who cares anyhow . The EMP bomb or world war 3 will just take everything back out to the way humans lived in the 1790's. then who care about internet people will just say f- the internet i just want my power back. Blame me for everything please!!! bpl stands for on internet boardband as (BIG Powerline Leaks) or (interference) as we have told you all for many years ha ha lol.

2006 the year of BPL??

Well,considering the advancement and deployment of other and much better technologies, I sure as hell would'nt bet on it. Just remember this:

-BPL connections are in the thousands,vs the millions for DSL and cable, Im sure wireless has to be at least in the tens-of thousands.
- Network with class-do it with glass

DTE, the Detroit area power company can't even deliver electricity reliably... Absolutely NO way should they be allowed near BPL.
