Classic title download via broadband
(old news - 03:42PM Friday Jun 09 2006)
tags: hardware · gaming · content
According to Ars Technica, classic titles for Nintendo's upcoming "Wii" console will sell in the $4.50 to $9 range. Nintendo missed the broadband wave with the Gamecube, but their new console will allow for broadband downloading of a vast library of back Nintendo classics, presumably including such titles as Excite Bike, Bionic Commando, and Duck Hunt. The console itself should sell for less than $250 when it launches this fall.

Emulators are buggy. Nintendo knows how to write a flawless emulator for any of their consoles. Plus, with their new controller, it will make all of this very enjoyable.

Get a better emulator then. Back when I used to use them I didn't encounter troubles. Sorry but free for all is beating 9 dollars for one game.

Not all emulators are buggy, however most have strange glitches.

I could go on and on about poorly coded emulators that display strange sounds, artifacts, and colors. Yes, even your beloved ZNES and others have these problems (it varys from game to game)

Rest assured since Nintendo WROTE the hardware, provided the framework, and licensed the content, they will have no problems with any of their games when played through the Wii emulator.

Perhaps because you getting the games for free is illegal... The emulators are not illegal- the roms are. I'm not judging you, just stating that being able to play legally, on the TV, with a nintendo controller maybe is a better gaming experience.

Re: Nothing new

Illegal, probably, but legality is not related to morality. Most people who want to play the old games want to play the old games because they played the old games.

Most people who played the old games played the old games because they owned the old games because they paid for the old games.

That's funny.

I still have about 50-some original NES carts in a box. I bought them all for "full" price, back in the day. Legally.

Tell me I don't have a right to play them on an emulator now, and that it's illegal. I bought them *once*, they happily took my money then, amd I ain't buying them again just because the original console was poorly-made and had a relatively-short lifespan.

Re: Nothing new

I don't see how the console was poorly made it is 21 years old and I got mine on the first christmas it was out and guess what it still works flawlessly to this date and is still hooked up and played. I think alot of the problems it had was bad tempered little kids that got hold of it and everytime teh game did not fall over to them to be beaten in a heartbeat it was thrown kicked yelled at hit and what ever thier little tempers could muster up. Hot at all saying this is why yours broke but I had a friend that would trash a console in aa matter of weeks to funny

YOU do, aren't people that own the actual games allowed to have the roms? Isn't it legal for "backup purposes only"? So yeah..but for everyone else who doesn't (including me)... it's illegal

You shouldn't, but some gamers who aren't as tech savvy as you or me will probably fork over the 4 bucks to play a "classic" game.

Remember people, we're the ones (for the most part) the technophobes and not so computer literates come to. A lot of them don't have a clue how to run emulators, etc.

your right, why should Nintendo make any money off their games. For that matter why should movie companies make money, or artist make money for their work.

oh yea...and the next time when you take my order at Burger king I won't be paying either.

Sorry to get nasty, but as somebody who is 40k in the whole for a education to write programs, piracy kinda makes me mad.

They are providing a way to play classic games on a modern platform. Take the chance, and get legal.

Kind of....pricey?

$9? You can buy almost any Nintendo game on eBay or at a yard sale for that much. I was thinking along the lines of like $2-$3/game, IF that.

Re: Kind of....pricey?

Yeah, I agree that is kind of pricey. As already mentioned a lot of people emulate these games already for free. Paying 4.50 to 9 per game will turn off a lot of people but dropping the price to $1-$2 a game would really get people thinking its may be worth the buy. Here's hoping Nintendo see the feedback and think twice about it.

i'd be willing to bet that the $9 games will be the N64 titles (as they are newer) and/or the Sega/TG16 titles because of paying for licensing them.

probably any nintendo wholly owned title will be less than the third party stuff which would also account for a flux in the pricing.

Yes, but look at the bright side! Since it's all digital with no physical medium, you'll never have to blow inside those NES cartridges to clear the contacts of dust ever again!

Re: Kind of....pricey?

Even with the dust covers on, that didn't mean much. The contacts oxidized, so more than blowing was necessary.

Such as pushing and pulling the game out, to get down to the copper, or getting a cleaning kit.

The sad thing is, I've never seen a single used NES or SNES game that had the dust cover on it.

How do people lose these things? I have over 100 NES games and SNES games that I've owned since childhood, and have all the original dust covers.

At some point in the SNES's lifetime they stopped including them, I know for certain that Yoshi's Island didn't come with one.

They really didn't matter anyway, the problem wasn't dust, it was cheap copper contacts that corroded in the carts and a poorly designed connector on the US NES frontloader deck.

Nope, and I don't have a Gamecube either (for the set mentioned below).

I did Beat Zelda 2, and the one that came out for the snes, but I haven't played any titles since.

I nearly beat the first one, but had to give the game back to the kid I borrowed it from (this was like 1992).

Bionic Commando and Master Blaster, HERE I COME!!

I'm with Karl, I desperatly want to play Bionic Commando!

I also can't wait to play a game called Master Blaster. I would love to re-play Contra and the SNES Castlevania series.

IMHO, the Xbox 360 has great graphics but even their funnest games are only a 5 on a 1-10 scale. Nintendo has so many 10 quality games they can keep you busy for MONTHS! I also would love to play Battle Tanks or Starfox series.

Graphic are not the holy grail in the new console wars...

One of my fav games, still have it downstairs. I'll never forget getting to the end and being "wtf, hitler?"

On topic, I knew...just knew nintendo was gonna get greedy with these prices. If they had a brain they'd make them sub dollar amounts, then they'd fly off the shelves and people would give into temptation more easily.

Hence the 'subscription' portion. Cancel your service, and you lose access to the games. Seems like a solid business plan to me.

compared to live which is $50 a year total.

but if they adopted the MMORPG style pay to play system it could kinda ruin it.

now if they set it up like XBLArcade then it would be decient, where you can use an internal currency to get the games and stuff you want, put retail packages of points(and that way, little kiddies aren't grabbing for mommy and daddy's creditcards)

and yes i'm perfectly aware it's a blatant ripoff of the marketplace points thing done by MS but it's actually a really solid business model.

the Wii is looking pretty nice to me nowadys...its still NOTHING compared to the PS3, but i'll be copping one cuz Im a gamer...otherwise, the ZNES is ALL I NEED...

to the above posters, ya'll ever heard of extending a S-Video or whatever flavor of PC-to-TV connection? Too all the flat screen owners, moving the lightweight TV to closer to the PC shouldnt be THAT hard.. hell, if you were THAT pressed on gettin the romz, a little media-center re-structuring shouldnt be a big deal...

why no subscription based service???

I cannot believe that they would pass up using the subscription based model that mmorpgs use. I think a subscription service would have a much better selling point since people are already use. Either that or follow the Itunes lead and go $.99 a title. I just don't see myself re-buying old games I use to own at a min of $4.50 per title. I'd much rather just subscribe to the service for 14.95/mo or whatever and have unlimited access. They could even set it up that once you cancel your subscription that it locks you out of any games you had already downloaded to your Wii.

IGN Says Different! The price is for new games?

»wii.ign.com/articles/711/711629p1.html

"We'd like people to play new, low-scale games for ¥500 yen or ¥1000 yen," Iwata stated.

"These prices apparently encapsulate only titles newly created for the Virtual Console. It is not yet clear if classic NES, S-NES and N64 games will fall under the same price range umbrella."

...You can't beat TV and just plugging the NES in

I recently unearthed my NES just to play some of my old classic favorites, like NES Golf, the Super Mario Series, Duck Hunt, (Love that Grey Gun...) RBI Baseball (Great 80s classic Baseball game) and Link, but sadly I believe the battery in Link has died as it won't save argh!!!...and especially on my 32" Toshiba TV...its pretty sweet, it sure beats playing the emulator on my Computer screen.

You just can't beat the original gameplay on these consoles, sure, graphics suck, but who cares about the graphics, really? Between loading times, and waiting and 10 million options to go through, its very time consuming.
Pop in Dr. Mario, or "Tengen" Tetris, and you're off and running with your friends.

They just don't make games like that anymore...

Also to the person who said blow on the cartridges, that's the LAST thing you want to do...clean the edge connectors with Windex...and your games will last nearly a lifetime. I guess for someone who grew up with these systems, its a little different than the Xbox 360 and the PS3 and whatnot. I may endup selling my Xbox and PS2, and just start collecting more of these games.

It'd be easier though with the Wii Console, because finding these games is more and more difficult to find and well, eBay seems to be yumming it up with unbelieveable prices people will pay for a console and 30 games (I saw an auction go up to $200)...

But yes, even for $4.50 to $9, I'd be interested, depending on the game of course.

Re: ...You can't beat TV and just plugging the NES in

The games aren't what failed for the NES.

The springs that loaded and held the carts in place in the console had short lifespans, and if the spring failed it wouldn't read the cart right, thus rendering the console basically uselss unless you wanted to open er' up and replace/repair the spring yourself.

Or unless you're me, and discovered that an old WHAM! tape cassette jammed in did a great job of holding the cart in when the spring failed.

I would push the cart just enough in to where the back where the label was would "slam" against the inner tray. Worked every time. Hot breath worked like a charm too.

I don't know what some of you guys are saying. I would gladly pay $4-$9 to play these games legally. Especially if they have games like:

Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Secret of Mana
Dragon Warrior 1 - 4
Destiny of an Emperor
Bandit Kings of Ancient China
Uncharted Waters
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 2 - 4
Super Mario RPG

Hell yes I would pay for each and every one of those.

Still not a bargain...

I can get my old GC or Nintendo 1 fired up and play...for free! Or my Colecovision, Atari 5200...

Point is, Xbox Live has arcade games (only 8 total) that aren't bad, but cost $8-9. (800 points on average...and you can only buy a 1600 point card or charge to your credit card...)

I still like using MAME and I've old roms on CDs...well...as long as they will load up and haven't rotted...
