Sources: shipping enabled laptops in Q3
(old news - 01:21PM Wednesday Jun 14 2006)
tags: wireless · hardware
The unofficial geek consensus concerning 802.11n draft gear is that users should wait for the final spec; in part because prices will fall, but also because there's no guarantee that a firmware update will upgrade all of this draft hardware being sold to the final 802.11n spec. If you absolutely need range right now, experts advise users to spring for one of the available MIMO (multiple input multiple output) wireless routers.

That's why it's strange to see the Digitimes circulating a rumor, citing vendor "sources", that says Dell is keen to ship draft 802.11n hardware in some laptops later this year.

Upgradeable?

As long as it is upgradeable, I see no problem with it. Dell may provide a firmware upgrade, or they may provide a hardware upgrade. Most of the Dell laptops have wireless on a replaceable card anyway, so if the firmware upgrade will not get you to the final spec, Dell could (and should) provide you with a card swap to get you there.

I would smell a lawsuit if that would be that case

Re: Upgradeable?

well.. perhaps not a lawsuit... but surely a black eye if they chose to either not fix it or offer to fix it for a price
