11 million downloads; service will re-launch this fall
(old news - 12:52PM Tuesday Jun 20 2006)
In May, Disney launched a two month trial website to see if Internet downloads of some of ABC's top properties, with ads included, would be popular. The answer is yes, according to the company. Shows were downloaded 11 million times the first month; in contrast since October, Disney/ABC has sold more than 6 million downloads via iTunes (with shows priced at $1.99 each). The website will be taken down June 30 and re-launched this fall.

NICE!

This might prove to be a viable competitor to cable TV-based recording solutions. Why pay more for something that can record everything you may not want to see when you can just get recordings of the stuff you do want to see?

Nice to see an entertainment company that gets it.

Get it for free with commercials, or pay the 2 bucks, and get a clean, no commercial version.

IMHO, it's worth the 2 bucks, as opposed to trying to download a pirated version, risk spyware, bad downloads, etc.

The RIAA could take a huge lesson from these guys.

Forget it I'm not paying 2 bucks per ep. $10 a year is my limit.

Well, it's been a while since I did any on line file trading, but I know people that left things like their tax returns, quicken statements, and credit card pin numbers open to the world when they installed file sharing software.

Junior comes in, clicks "share all" when setting up Kazaa, and mom and dad are totally unaware. Letting the whole of the internet have a gander at my HD is my idea of being spied on. May as well play with your own ass fat IFO the picture window in the living room.

Bad downloads? Happened to me ALL THE TIME when I would download music from P2P. Last couple or first couple seconds of a song missing. Shit, I can remember downloading a song and it was taped of the damn radio. The DJ chatter, static, and everything.

Why waste my time and effort dealing with that shit, when I can get a clean, full copy of the song I'm looking for for only a buck.

I mean, I'm cheap, but come on people.....

Nice comeback! What linuxjunkie meant to say was nobody uses Kazaa anymore and the other options out there to get tv shows are very efficient and spyware free and no corrupt downloads.

I've used gnutella clients, and I get corrupted, incomplete, or bad files all the time.

95% of the people that surf the internet are ignorant when it comes to the internet in general and comptuers. SO his argument applies to 95% of the people.

To me this strikes at the heart of the a la carte regulation debate. Do we really need government regulation when it clear the networks are moving beyond the concept of a TV channel?

I'm shocked.

Free content is popular. You must be kidding.

Unsurprising.

Silly companies. People like stuff! :P

I wish something like this was in effect when I missed the season opener of 24 in January...

No reason every network shouldn't have this.

The question is where is every other tv network at?

Re: No reason every network shouldn't have this.

Warner brothers has loads of shows ( older ones that are out of syndication.). They're offered through Aol's In2tv for free, including "high-quality" episodes (500+mB for 40min show) that seem to be at least dvd quality. You have to be use their player, be connected to the internet while watching, and they get deleted automatically after a few months though. About 5 new episodes are currently added each month I think for about 40 different series.

Quality

I checked it out and the quality could be better. Otherwise it's a pretty neat idea.

Only one thing wrong for me

I think it was great, it allowed me to catch up on Alias and Desperate Housewives. The quality was great, I felt that the commercials were very tolerable, and allowed you to get more information on a product if you wanted to know more than the 30 second blurb told you.

Full screen would have been nice, but the quality was still good and it didn't seem to take a boatload of bandwidth.

The only thing wrong is that this was just a trial and will be going down. I wish they would leave it up and just slowly migrate into the new version for the fall.

I agree with the poster who said that finally a media company gets it, they should all do the same.

ok

Yeah, the iTunes video really really really really really really really, seriously sucked I thought. Tried ONE download, thinking it'd be ok to play back on a laptop... BIG mistake... those downloads are meant ONLY for a 2.5" ipod screen I guess, because the resolution was pathetic.

I haven't tried the ABC stuff, but it's got to be better than iTunes frail attempt at selling video... thing is, quicktime video can be very good, and usually has smooth motion... oh well.. I could take the free stuff w/ads as long as it's not any worse than standard tv.

The media folks will "Get it" when they get 30fps (or 29.97 fps) decent quality resolution that is as near NTSC as possible for free. Otherwise, it's a joke. There's plenty of bandwidth to do it right, and esp. if one could download it, they'd have a hit on their hands. ...As long as once it's been downloaded you could skip through ads, I'd be fine with that... while downloading, it'd be more like streaming and maybe they could "disable" fast forwarding, but still let folks skip around once it's done.

Until it's all AT LEAST full screen NTSC quality, with SMOOTH framerates, computer based video is lacking. We're talking OLD technology here, analog at that, which is FAR superior to so much of this overly compressed garbage... really is shameful all the geeks can't figure this very simple thing out... people have been used to smooth video for too long and shouldn't accept LESS quality through all this technology.

Re: ok

You should try the ABC one its pretty good the screen needs to be a lil bigger but the framerate was nice and its free just they did the whole season of lost instead of the last 4 shows of it

Very Good

The ABC service was great. While it didn't include full screen the quality was still good. Also using the Mac OS X screen zoom option got me a very good full screen version.

Personally I would never get a show on iTunes because the resolution sucks.

While you can easily find better quality free downloads, I'd rather stream it from ABC then have to wait for my show to unrar. Yes I'm lazy heh.

MythTV for the smart ppl

Nah, Good for the masses, but I'll stick with MythTV. You can record it and convert it to iPod, burn to DVD, and other formats good a smart scripter can dream up.
