In-flight broadband market has 'not developed satisfactorily'
(old news - 06:12PM Monday Jun 26 2006)
tags: business
Boeing today confirmed earlier reports saying that the company was considering the sale of its in-flight broadband service Connexion. "Boeing has pursued the business vigorously, developing technology that has worked well and evolved into a useful product," the company said in a news release. "However, the market for the service has not developed satisfactorily." Many American airlines have been on shaky financial ground, making upgrading their aircraft with broadband service implausible.

Not that I fly much, but

I dont see how I can go more than an hour without access to The Net. Blackberry, EV-DO, Wifi, LanLine, VoIP, IM. All get used ALL DAY, Everyday. I cant fathom being cooped-up on an airplane for more than 45 minutes without Broadband access.

There is a mature comment.

US Airlines are on shaky ground, Lufthansa have installed it on a number of aircraft but it appears to be a business class product only and is probably included in the price of the ticket.

I would use it for tooling around on a long flight, fragging people from 38,000ft, but I'm quite happy to listen to my iPod and read a book, or fall asleep.

Try reading a book and get unwired for awhile. It will relax you.

I fly at least twice a week. Trust me: it's rather easy to remain unplugged for the duration of a flight.

Taking a nap on the plane or watching a movie helps pass time. If you fly on JetBlue or similar airlines with DirecTV channels, I'm sure you'll find something to do. It's a 5-6 hour non-stop flight with JetBlue from the east coast to the west coast.

It's a good break for those that can't stay off the net.

spare batteries+DVDs=who needs the net in flight.

or just fly jetblue and you can watch TV instead. if i had wifi and net on a plane id just be playing WOW or Everquest on the plane so some unplugged time is good.

How bout the prices? The last 3 times I have flown, Toronto, Atlanta, Montreal, and Calgary airport wanted like $8 - 12/hr... It was a freaken joke... Only Narita and Naha airport in Japan had free internet, and even then it was stupid yahoo broadband terminals you could use and not WiFi..

With those high airport terminal rates, I'd be affraid to see what kind of money they want in the air...

I'll take a book any day...

Great

First, I totally agree with TechSponge's comments.

In addition,

1) The last thing I want to do on a trans-Pacific flight is to get an email from my boss, and

2) On a domestic USA flight in the back of the plane, it's impossible to put your notebook on the fold down tray so you can't use broadband even it even if you had it. Wonder if Boeing even thought of the human factor?

BINGO!!

Not only domestic. I was on an 11 hr trip to Japan recently, and it was impossible to use a notebook PC.

If Boeing actually wanted people to use the internet access, they'd have to give us enough room to use a PC first.

It is not Boeing's fault you cheaped out and flew cattle (economy) class. Upgrade and you will get more room. Secondly the airline and not the airframe manufacturer (Boeing) decides on seat pitch and space. Don't believe me, next time in Japan fly a domestic ANA or JAL flight. It's tight!

Funny you mention that. I did fly on an ANA domestic flight while I was there, one of their new domestic 777's. There was alot more room than there was on the American Airlines trans-Pacific flight; i could use my PC! Definitely not what I was expecting.

As to flying in cattle class, I try to as much as possible, but Biz class was full on this flight. And if the Connexion business model is to only sell to those few seats that are at the front of the plane, no wonder that the idea is a flop.

Easy solution

Boeing should just offer to install and maintain the system on airlines that will be likely to have profitable customer usage of Connexion. They would get to keep most of the profits and the airlines get to use the service to attract customers at almost no risk to themselves. It's vitally important they get it out in the public eye and achieve wide brand recognition before someone else comes along with the same idea.
