Team up to bid on wireless spectrum
(old news - 09:33AM Thursday Jul 13 2006)
tags: satellite · wireless
Echostar and DirecTV have teamed up to bid on wireless spectrum in an auction next month, as the two companies gear up to offer their own broadband service to compete with the incumbent triple play. As we've discussed, DirecTV owner Rupert Murdoch is geared up to make a billion dollar broadband move, which most speculate will be an entry into the national Wimax market. The new triple-play service would likely be blended with Murdoch's ever-increasing content collection (Myspace, IGN, etc.).

Re: Let us hope.

This would be sweet, I have a tower in view from my house! Currently only viable HSI is Charter Cable. Too far out for VerizoN DSL.

Depends if they put equipment on that particular tower or not.

The majority of Alaska is paying $50/month for 320K/240K, wanna know why? There isn't any other options outside of Anchorage.

Atleast you get nice weather year round, I'd kill to avoid the summer and spring heat.

That was symetrical and back when 1.5 was a dream for T1's that most businesses couldn't afford.
T1 was like 2500 a month and noone was running those speeds like we do now.

Even if combo wins license, years before any rollout

Even if DirecTV and Echostar win wireless spectrum at auction, it will be years before any real rollout takes place. If people are betting on some big Wimax infrastructure being in place soon, they will be disappointed.

Re: Even if combo wins license, years before any rollout

It shouldn't be years before we start seeing these roll-outs. These guys are most likely going to jump on existing towers in place from wireless carries. Most localities require wireless carriers to share their towers which keeps their numbers down. I can see that maybe by the Q2 or Q3 of 2007, we will see a major rollout.

I agree with TK on this, let me explain. Most mobile carrier rent towers. So they would have to agree on a rental rate, which could take months, years. Then the actually network design and ordering of circuits. 3 yrs minimum

Here's to hoping for a trial in Rockville, MD

Randolph Hills, nestled just outside Rockville MD between Kensington and Garrett Park, would be an excellent location for a trial.

JT, you are the eternal optimist.

I have resigned myself to at least one year more and probably two as a customer of our wonderful local comcast franchise.

Is Wimax also a LoS product?

I am curious if Wimax is a LoS product like the other wireless services out there? There is a wireless tower 10 miles away that services Bath, but because of mounatains and trees, I don't have direct LoS. Will this be something to look forward to in the future? Just trying to find a real broadband service I may be able to jump on.

Re: Is Wimax also a LoS product?

It is not LoS but just like a small radio if you are in a valley and the tower is on the other side of the mountain, then no it could not get a signal to you. If the tower is on top of the mountain and trees and buildings are in the way it will pass through them.

Okay, it still wouldn't work then. I think it is up on a mountain, but there are several other mountains in between me and the tower and they are higher then it.
