First look at the Franklin Wireless USB EVDO card
(old news - 10:10AM Monday Aug 07 2006)
tags: coverage · wireless · hardware
Mobility Today takes an early sneak peek at the Franklin Wireless USB EVDO Card, which Sprint will be offering with its EV-DO wireless broadband service later this month. The card allows tablet PC and Mac laptop and desktop users (lacking a PCMCIA card slot) to connect to Sprint's EV-DO network (average downstream speeds of around 500kbps).

As we recently noted, Sprint has sped up its EV-DO Revision A deployment plans, and claims the current EV-DO network will serve 200 million people by year's end, while EV-DO revision A upgrades will be available to around 40 million customers in that same time-frame. Most sprint customers however won't see the faster speeds until 2007.

While Revision A is capable of some impressive peak speeds (3.1Mbps/1.8Mbps, potentially), it looks like Sprint's sustained speeds will be considerably slower - upstream speeds should increase from 70-144 kbps, to between 300 & 400kbps. Downstream speed increases will be less exciting: to 450-800 kbps from the current 400-700 kbps.

Latency should be improved as well; current EVDO customers see 150ms-400ms latency (worse if congested), which should be closer to 100ms once upgrades are completed.

Latency

Latency should also be mentioned here, as it is a large piece of the Rev A upgrade. It should drop to below 100ms.

How is the stability? We have a Sprint EV-DO card (not Rev A though obviously) and the fluctuations in the service leave a lot to be desired. Its ok for wireless based data, but it could never compare to a real broadband solution like cable or DSL.

Who knows why latencies are so high? 100Ms is much better compared to 200-500ms spikes.

A friend managed to download 165 gigs over VZ and 125 gigs over Sprint on his biz accounts with EVDO.

Unlimited is unlimited.

He called VZ and he told them, "I have 12 cellphones with my biz account. If you cancel my service, I'll go with T-Mobile."

"But, sir, that is a $2400 liquated damage charge."

"So? I pay $5k a month already. What's $2400?"

This guy managed to even negotiate a discount on his 12 cells for his biz with some manager that dropped his bill about $1k a month.

I got the service today. Speeds are 600-1300kps with latecy around 150ms to google.com.

Very impressed. Its my primary service now.

Re: Latency

If the average ping is 150 I'm not so impressed, 80-110 would sway me into buying. but maybe it changes with different towers

Are you still on dialup? Many cable connections still get around 100ms pings.

Re: Latency

Yup since cable is 2 miles down the road (but it's 20ms pings). And the towers around here are only GSM last I checked.

Re: Latency

Once Rev A is launched completely by mid 07' pings will be around 50ms.

Re: Latency

I called Sprint today and they said that my area is still PCS, or 144kbps but had a note at the bottom saying service should be EVDO by the end of this year. So looks like it's still a waiting game.

nice

This card would obviously have to sport a usb 2.0 port. Looking at the bars in the picture of the article he only had one bar and still got pretty fair speeds. I would like to see how much it is with full bars. If the USB does not become a bottleneck for the bandwidth coming in.

As for deployment of REV A. I believe it's by the end of the year since they have accelerated it.

Here is that article >> »www2.sprint.com/mr/news_dtl.do?id=12900

no it wouldn't. USB 1.0 is 12Mbps max and the max throughput you are going to see is only 3.1mbps, but you'll get more like 700kbps so 1.0 could handle it just fine. However, 2.0 interfaces are so plentiful now they would probably only do 2.0

Re: nice

Well I been reading comments that USB 2.0 has 480mbps max transfer but in real world results you only see 48mbps max. So I would assume the same would apply to usb 1.0.

That's why I thought it should obviously sport a usb 2.0 port.

Re: nice

clever hiding of numbers. if you only see a tenth of the bandwidth you'd still see 1.2mbps which is a LOT more than you'll be averaging with this card. People think they are going to see 3.1mbps but lets not kid ourselves. You'd have to be the only one on that tower in perfect conditions.

i don't think your USB mouse and keyboard are going to cause any bottlenecks. Your flash memory reader wont either.

Re: nice

You don't seem to understand what I am saying.

If you are in a location that you can get higher than 1.2mbps you obviously would never benefit from those speeds because of the bottleneck transfer through usb.

Re: nice

After reading this thread I am not sure where you are getting your math at. The USB 1.1 supported max transfer (aka Full Speed USB) is 12Mbps.

The max transfer speed sprint thinks users will hit is only 3.1 Mbps...just over a quarter of the available bandwidth provided by a Full Speed USB device. There should be NO problem at all for USB 1.1 compliant devices to be able to handle EVDO-A implementations.

However, I think it will probably come as a USB 2.0 device just because that future-proofs it a little better.

While this device is sorely needed and long past due it still is not Rev A compatible so if you are lucky enough to get the upgrade in the next few months new equipment will be needed.

The current cards use USB already

I just trialed the Sprint Novatel EVDO PC card and when you insert it in XP it reports as a "USB Controller" first, then as a "Serial Communications Device" so the fact they have an external version is not all that surprising.

USB IS a serial interface. USB = Universal Serial Bus.

Serial Communications Device = a modem, in this case it set up a COM port.

Not all USB devices are modems.

I was pointing out that the PC Cards are already using an internal USB interface, so having an external USB interface is not a big reach.

Re: The current cards use USB already

Actually all serial devices communicate. They don't have to be modems. You are correct that all USB devices are modems, but all serial devices do communicate. It is a communications bus. Sorry, just the network admin in me came out, since I do this for a living. Not trying to dog you, just wanted to make sure no one got confused reading your post.

Who gives a crap anyways.....

Cingular's HSDPA is blowing away anything Sprint and verizon can offer.

but don't take my word for it.

Re: Who gives a crap anyways.....

oh do pray tell, what does the redneck bastard offspring SexTel have up its sleeve? WiMAX? give me a break. The upgrade path is everyone is going to WCDMA because Qualcomm says so. CDMA2000 is dead and so is GSM. Qualcomm bought Flarion and you will see the FlashOFDM technology used in WCDMA2billion or whatever the f-.

Re: Who gives a crap anyways.....

Although I don't know exactly the technology being used. Wimax can deliver speeds up to 70Mbps unlike FlashOFDM delivers 3mbps.

Although I did read that FlashOFDM can reach speeds of 54mbps it still does not reach the speed WiMax does and as both technologies continue to improve in the future maybe then we would compare.

The only advantage I see with HSDPA is that it's a software install and can run on current tower equipment.

By the way what's up with the redneck bastard comment it sounds like you have a grudge against them.

Sure, on paper only. Just like how 802.11B has rates up to 11Mbps, but only delivers as much as 5.5

Re: Who gives a crap anyways.....

Actually 802.11B I was only able to get at max 300KB/sec while transferring between wireless to LAN. So I think it's much less than that. Unlike 802.11G which says 54Mbps but you only see 3.0MB/sec.

So if anything the max I would at least expect from WiMax is around 6-10MB/sec. With FlashOFDM lower I would assume at around 3-7MB/sec. But those are guesstimates obviously.
