DirectTV, Echostar & T-Mobile top dogs so far
(old news - 12:57PM Thursday Aug 10 2006)
tags: business · wireless
The FCC’s auction of AWS broadband spectrum began yesterday, and as Business Week and Reuters report, it was essentially a slugfest between media giants like Cablevision's Charles Dolan, News Corp.'s Rupert Murdoch, and Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffett. Among the top bidders is Wireless DBS, a joint creation of Echostar & Murdoch's DirecTV, who are likely getting into the wireless broadband business together. The auction could net Uncle Sam in excess of $15 billion dollars.

Windfall - blown away

Nice.
So beyond how the primary carriers will rape us with fees for use of the new spectrum they now 'own'...
...what will happen to the $15 BILLION dollars?
Iraq war fund?
Department of Homeland Security slushfund #123?
Another congressional pay raise?
I'd like to see some proper and responsible accounting of this money.

That's a bit of an extreme metaphor. Are the companies involved holding a gun to your head and forcing you to use their services? Of course not.

Well, they're the "public airwaves", so I'm sure that right now, they're figuring how much of a check they're going to send to each one of us as our share of the proceeds

It all goes to general Treasury. The money will not be earmarked for anything in particular. And $15 billion will be spent by the Federal government in 47 hours time based on the 2007 fiscal year budget of $2.8 trillion.

Re: Windfall - blown away

I read most of the money was going to be used to switch government officials from the current spectrum that is being sold.

DING DONG anyone home?!

Umm... this is just another tax on the already overtaxed americans....

If the companies didn't have to BUY the spectrum - they might offer the service at a lower rate............

But since they have to buy the spectrum - it means higher fees for the same service..... so just another tax! You don't really think the companies are going to eat this cost, do you?

However, an argument could be made that the companies would charge the same price - whether or not they had to buy the spectrum..... and you are probably right..... oh well!

Re: DING DONG anyone home?!

likely the sat. broadband will still be expensive, yes. To those companies (Echostar/DirecTV) it's still just part of the expense... they don't launch a bird for free either...

I think it's going to be costly either way denverco100...
heck, look how much sat. internet costs now, it's prohibitive for many many people... they see "ooh, look, $60/month, that's not toooo awful bad to pay for what city folk get!" ...then they see that it costs about $600 for equipment and even MORE per month for a more reliable package (pro/business level service) and don't give it a second thought "..nevermind honey, let's just keep that 22.1kbps dialup we got goin' down at the farm..."

On the other hand, if both companies do this right, the cost could actually be a little cheaper, offer faster service (latency will obviously still be high..) and sign up more new customers. ...That's probably what I'd want to do if I were Charlie Ergan.

Re: DING DONG anyone home?!

Latency decreases should be what makes people willing and wanting to sign up for this service. A decent wiMax setup should net sub 100 ms pings and truthfully sub 80 depending on distance and los. Definitely not cable but better than the limited options to date.
