Vote will now be in January of '07
(old news - 04:45PM Friday Aug 11 2006)
tags: wireless · hardware
The IEEE has begun "slogging" through thousands of comments on the 802.11n draft Wi-Fi standard, pushing back a new vote at least several months, reports ARNnet. That vote will now likely take place in January of 2007, instead of this fall. While many vendors have rushed draft gear to market, much of it has a tendency to interfere with legacy gear, and falls short of the potential the true 802.11n standard has.

Re: screw them

Here we go time for all the buracratic bs to start killing the process.

Why can't things go smooth and deployment of the tech move on?

Ill stick with my Gig wired network. Always on, always works, and dosen't mess with older devices.

Re: screw them

Yes, I've never needed to move beyond wired. Network cable is like 1 cent a foot, including shipping. Basically free. Plus I don't like laptops because I can't build them myself, and they have VERY limited upgradeablility.(see my new word?) Might as well get a Mac..

At home have netgear g 100mbs? laptop only has built in "b" 11mbs which I use 90% of the time. Need anything faster, connect up to gig bit wired lan. I know there are some that have a need for speed, but I'm guessing for home use that satisfies 90% of the market.

There are still some issues to resolve from standards point of view and some details needs to be clarified and they are not all that insignficant. You would be complaining that two standards based gear did not talk to each other or interfered with other gear.

However, nothing is holding you from getting pre-standard/draft-standard gear if you really need it.

Screw these people? My friend, I think you're the only one getting screwed. Buy pre-draft now and upgrade later. If you wish to screw them don't buy pre-draft.

Actually I care. This pre draft stuff violates FCC rules about interference. My neighbor installed pren gear and now I had to boost my signals to keep his stuff from drowing out my wifi.

I literally could not get more than 1 wall away from the AP without issues.

Really? What FCC rules would those be?

If the equipment really did violate FCC rules, it would be illegal to import or sell in this country.

Bottom lines is that all the current 802.11 equipment works on an unlicensed basis in the radio spectrum. From a regulatory point of view, you have no guarantees any of it will work without interference, and if you do experience interference, you have no recourse. If you want freedom from interference, you need to get a license in an appropriate slice of spectrum, or you need to run a wire.

No. All wireless equipment standard or draft or proprietary needs FCC certification. So, it abides by the FCC rules. Secondly, interference on the shared/unlicensed spectrum is expected and FCC is not going to do anything unless the equipment does cause interference in a licensed band.

What should be done anyway....

If pre N gear accomplishes your needs for wireless, the stick with it. The "N" battle will go on far past 2007.

I'm telling you though, the group that is supposed to be working together sound like an old married couple ready to divorce!

wifi is DEAD in 2007!

Who will care if 802.11n is available, when WIMAX with 802.11x backwards compatability with a MORE ROBUST wireless deployment trounces 802.11n in RANGE AND SPEED with wide-spectrum bonding and unregulated power transmissions for wimax built for EXTERNAL antennas (to the home) which can send and receive the signal 20 miles or more!

Uhm, yeah. Sure. Someone needs to go re-read what wimax really is, and what it isnt.

Stick with 802.11b/g

I don't think it is politics guys. There are problems with the technology. As stated in the article, performance of pre-N is falling short of expectations and the fact it tends to kill 802.11b/g gear is a big unforseen problem. What I think all this means is that they are sort of going back to the drawing board to iron out the problems. That probably means the pre-N gear out now won't be upgradeable whenever they do ratify it.

I'll bet a lot of this pre-N gear will disappear once they sell what's on the shelves now. 802.11b/g works just fine for now and is a lot cheaper. I don't see any reason to upgrade till it's all sorted out IMHO.

Re: Stick with 802.11b/g

I converted to 'g' the day that a friend came to visit, and cracked my wifi 'b' WEP key. My range is exceeds what I need for house coverage(signal goes 3 houses down the street). Until my friend comes over and cracks my WPA key I'll stick with g and WPA.
