story category Sprint Unveils EVDO Revision A Card
Now we just need the updated network...
(old news - 04:07PM Tuesday Aug 29 2006)
Sprint Nextel today trumpeted the arrival of the first EVDO revision A laptop card, the Novatel Wireless S720. Unfortunately, the card isn't of much use without the upgraded network that is supposed to go along with it.

As we recently noted, Sprint has sped up its EV-DO Revision A deployment plans. Sprint claims their current EV-DO network will serve 200 million people by year's end, while EV-DO revision A upgrades will be available to around 40 million customers. Most sprint customers won't see the faster speeds until 2007.

While Revision A is capable of some impressive peak speeds (3.1Mbps/1.8Mbps, potentially), Sprint's sustained speeds will be considerably slower - upstream speeds should increase from 70-144 kbps, to between 300 & 400kbps. Downstream speed increases will be less exciting: to 450-800 kbps from the current 400-700 kbps.

Latency should be improved as well; current EVDO customers see 150ms-400ms latency (worse if congested), which should be closer to the 50-100ms range once upgrades are completed.

My suggestion would be to wait until they offer this service on a actual phone (instead of the PC card). This way you can still tether the phone to your laptop to use the EVDO, plus if you get the right plan then EVDO is free. You can also make voice calls using the phone as well.

Verizon outright banned people from doing it when I was a customer. They also had their phones "locked" to prevent people from trying. I "believe" that some Verizon phones now allow tethering, although I believe you do have to pay extra for this. If you are planning on buying I would double check what I just told you, since I am only going off memory and a quick Google search.

Re: Great

Yes, they now offer this as an addon $15 for select PDA phones. My Treo 700p is one of the included ones. It was extremely simple to set this up with VZ and I am currently enjoying the "legit" tethering now WITH the evdo speeds.

INCORRECT! You need a phone-as-modem plan which is IIRC $40/month, but it does include internet access on the phone which is $15/month....

No, you are incorrect. All you need is the application on your phone and the ability to connect it to your PC. Assuming you have EVDO, you are good to go. I have and use Sprint everyday and there is no charge for tethering.

Re: Great

I got away with tethering my 144k simple Sprint network, but that was because I couldnt pull down allot of data on it. EVDO will rack up the data usage MUCH faster.

I download on average around 1mb just about all the time and occasionally around 1.5mb.

The Speed is better then advertised, which is really rare for a service.

Tethering will result in service termination, trust me.

You are mistaken as well. Sprint puts the tethering application on the device! It comes with the software, unlike the Verizon version. Furthermore, Sprint is the only carrier that encourages tethering and internet connection sharing. This has been discussed numerous times on this website.

»Sprint is already $40/month

For some people it works, but in general you need to pay for the plan.

Also it is possible that you be billed PER KILOBYTE.

See sprint.com for further details.

As long as you have a plan over $100 per month then there is no charge for EVDO or most other features.

From Sprint's blurb...

The Merlin S720 will initially be sold through Sprint indirect and business sales channels and online at www.sprint.com for a suggested retail price of $249.99 and as low as $99.99 with a two-year subscriber agreement. Service plans for the card currently range from $39.99 per month for 40 MB to $79.99 per month for unlimited data usage. Customers signing a two-year subscriber agreement will be eligible to receive unlimited data usage for $59.99 per month (no separate voice plan required). Sprint plans to make a variety of compatible devices in varying form factors available later this year.

No let's see them define "Unlimited".

Road Warriors will be glad to see better speeds

When Sprint starts rolling Rev A out this year and next, there will be a lot of happier road warriors who will be able to move those spreadsheets and word documents back and forth to corporate much faster. The better upload speeds will be the most appreciated change.

That is some serious insight.

As will (my personal favorite) the "ability" to make VoIP calls. I say "ability" since I have a feeling that Sprint will try and curb this activity as it eats into the cellular minutes. I can say that I have used both Skype and Broadvoice on my current EVDO Sprint phone a number of times, the only issue being the high latency causes noticeable delays making conversation difficult. 50ms would be ideal for some sweet (and FREE) VoIP action!

So, I have to buy a new EV-DO card???

I'm with Verizon, and their second level tech support told me that all their current EV-DO cards will be able to take advantage of Rev. A when it rolls out. Have I been lied to (again)?

The lied through their teeth (and thats one reason I left them). You will need a new card/phone to take advantage of Rev A. However, Rev A. cards will be backwards compatible with current EVDO.

No charge for tethering with 2 sprint pda phones

Anyone who has read the post at sprintusers.com knows that the only 2 phones sprint will allow tethering from is the ppc 6700 and treo 650. Im not sure of the treo 700p. 15 dollars per month and thats it as long of course you dont go completely overboard like downloading a 4 gb movie...

Some EVDO Facts

There's confusion about data cards vs evdo phones. Tethering is for phones, not data cards, which in itself is data on the laptop. Sprint is $60/month unlimited and you don't need a voice plan, so Verizon/Cingular voice users can get that rate. Verizon requires a Verizon voice acct to get it at $60/month, otherwise it is $80/month. An Verizon is not truely unlimited where Sprint is.

For tethering phones, Sprint is $15/month for basic inphone data and $40/month to tether = $55/month - there are hacks to get around this so can be done for $15/month. Verizon is $60/month to tether/inphone data. There are no Rev A phones announced yet but Sprint will offer them by Q4.

EVDO Rev 0 cards cannot be upgraded to Rev A but Rev 0 devices will work on Rev A network at Rev 0 specs.

Sprint plans to rollout Rev A to nearly entire network by end of next year. Verizon has not mentioned their plans yet but it may be difficult to do most of network with the 800mhz tower limitation that Verizon has but Sprint does not.
