Sveasoft Releases Talisman 1.2 Firmware
Wireless VLAN support...
For those of you who haven't moved on to other free, less shall we say - controversial firmware solutions, the folks at Sveasoft have released the latest version of their Talisman firmware, version 1.2. Among the improvements is the inclusion of Wireless VLANs(WVLAN) and support for separate QoS chains per interface. Or of course, if you're interested in getting more out of your router but don't know where to start, you could use Hyper-WRT, DD-WRT, or Open-WRT.

I'm even a subscriber, and I don't run it

I tried SVeasoft for quite awhile. I won't bother with the debate over them charging, but I am a subscriber. After extensive testing of several previous firmware builds they put out, I am once again running HyperWRT. Sveasoft just tries to cram too many features, which ends up bogging the router down. 2-3 minute reboot times after EVERY setting change is just insane.

No trouble since I went back to HyperWRT...and its free!

I switched to DD-WRT and haven't looked back. The Sveasoft firmware, like you stated, reboots take FOREVER and it seems to reboot, even for the smallest change.

That and the way they treat people who voice their opinion, even if they are paid subscribers has left a sour taste in my mouth and likely has damaged their credibility beyond repair with the community.

I'll second that. I've got DD-WRT v23 SP1 Final (voip) running on a WRT54GS v3 and it's sweet. I rarely have to reset the router and typically have uptimes of twenty days or more.

Plus, the ability to give the MAC address of my VTech Vonage telephone adapter Premium packet priority is also key.

Are you able to assign IP's by mac in that version? That is the one and only feature of sveasoft I miss.

Yes... dd-wrt can assign IPs based on MACs.

I am a former Sveasoft user... there is nothing to be missed about Sveasoft.

Yep. While I can't say for sure since I never bothered trying out Sveasoft's firmware, I'm pretty sure DD-WRT can do everything it can plus much more. The only thing I don't think it can do is the new "Wireless VLAN" feature that Sveasoft just added but I wouldn't be too surprised to find this feature in a new version of DD-WRT in the near future.

Mind pointing me to the page to set it up? I can't find it, and I THINK I am running the latest version.

Thank you for the link. I was using the stock HyperWRT, this one has some very nice added features.

I subscribed for 2 years and was thrilled when I found OpenWrt. You can do far more with it because it is essentially a Linux shell with downloadable packages. Don't be afraid of it, I new about zero in Linux before I tried it. I even has a web GUI for basic config.

Don't waste the money for their "support".

Quirky firmware, tempermental people behind the helm. Say ANYTHING even remotely negative about their FW in their "support forums" and you will be kicked out.

Try HyperWRT. Better, and FREE!

Re: Don't waste the money for their "support".

I second that. I once was a "subscriber" early on when Sveasoft had the better UI. I started using Freeman when it was "hacked" and encouraged other to do so here and on Slashdot. Shortly there after my username was banned and my subscription revoked from the official builds. Since then I've moved on to DD-WRT which worked better anyways. Talisman/Freeman wouldn't even get 1/2 of what my 15mbit FiOS connection supported.

Nice company. No worries though -- with those kind of corporate practices going on, it won't be long before they're out of business I'm sure.

Spend more time making it stable

I agree, wish they would spend more time making it stable, not cramming in features no one will use. Then people would buy it.

Wireless VLAN is the only thing of interest

Do any other firmwares offer this ability?

not that i know of yet. i think it may be a project that one of the independent hyperwrt coders is working on.

D-Link RuleZ!

Just kidding...

Look at it this way, at least there a choices and there is competition for your router's firmware. Losers like me stuck with a bastardized DI-624M can only hope that the router just dies so they have a good reason to get a new one. So much for open source firmware...

Released?

Where is the release? I dont see any release. It will never be "released" to the public. And support? That's a joke, there is no support from Sveasoft just ask any subscriber if they get any "support".

What a joke, Talisman has been in "development" for over a year and a half. Its bug riddled and full of security holes (as was every firmware that came out of sveasoft). Every other firmware project has implemented the fixes for all known security holes, but not Sveasoft. And don't mention the security holes, you'll get banned like I did.

Use sveasoft firmware = get pwn3d. No thanks...

Save your time and money

And skip this product. I was a subscriber for a year and never got a single update.

I wanted to use it because I was interested in IPSEC functionality (without having to hack it in myself) and it never came. When my subscription expired last December and I saw no hope of a new release anytime soon (here we are 9 months later) I chose not to renew.

There are better packages that are more stable (went back to the default software) than Sveasoft.

Responsive...but sensitive

I brought up a minor issue to Sveasoft and they were responsive, if not a little defensive. After saying it wasn't their problem (it really was) I put the WRT on the shelf until the next release comes along.

Agreed that activating all of the features will bog down the WRT, but I think the idea of having a diverse feature set to work with is what they are after. Activating them all is an individual issue.

I will give the new release a run and see if it is still worth pursuing and testing. If not, I will drop my "support".

Re: Responsive...but sensitive

I have several WRT's with all sorts of loads. Some sit on the shelf, some I use from time to time. I usually will drag one out when I am troubleshooting a networking issue and I need to see if an open or closed source has resolved it or not.

I don't want the hassle of loading and unloading firmwares on just one box when I want to try something. WRT's are cheap anyway.

bunch of crooks

sveasoft are CROOKS.

I didn't post on their website for a LONG time then when I went to log into my account it said "account revoked". Went back a few days later and I was completely banned from thier website (assume by IP). Said to myself well screw them. Didn't really know about paypal subscription services and they proceeded to take 20 dollars from my paypal account 5 months after I was banned from their website. I've sent many emails asking for a refund and they never respond.

Stay away from these thieves.

I'm Surprised They're Still Around

Usually when something becomes irrelevant, it disappears.

Sveasoft is certainly irrelevant nowadays.

DD-WRT works great for me!

I have a WRT54G V4 and 2 WRT54GL Routers
all with DD-WRT, one is the main connection, the 2 other routers are in bridge mode for desktop computers, smooth fast wireless you can plan WOW on!
