Samsung Unveils First Real '4G' Solution
100Mbps from a moving bus...

According to the International Telecommunication Union, a technology can't be called "4G" unless it offers mobile speeds in excess of 100Mbps and fixed speeds of 1Gbps. Samsung this week demonstrated what they're calling the first true 4G solution, based on their roving Wi-Bro technology. The company demonstrated the tech on a bus travelling 37 miles per hour. According to Samsung, their technology offers speeds fifty times faster that existing Wimax technology, and is capable of multicell data handovers at speeds of 100 Mbps.

Daily Wireless has an excellent overview. Samsung has spent more than $100 million on their WiBro solution, and hopes to have it to market by 2010. By "to market", they mean South Korea, so don't hold your breath for U.S. deployment.

Re: Ofcourse

Samsung = South Korean Megacorp. It only makes sense for them to deploy there first.

How much, per account, will it take to amortize that investment?

How many U.S. Americans are really willing to pay for speed? I know people who are still on dial-up, and can't be bothered to switch to DSL, even. One lady I talk with about this is paying $4 per month more than if she got 1536/384 from AT&T; but she is always looking past that 12-month contract, and when I tell her she'll wind up paying $3 per month more than her current dial-up at the end of the contract, she says, "No thanks. Dial-up is good enough for me".

Re: Ofcourse

Does she know what she's missing? Then again, if she doesn't really download much of anything, it probably doesn't matter much anyway. Though just waiting for webpages to load is getting longer and longer by the year with all the crap people are adding/embedding into them..

This isn't much of a surprise, just look at Japan to see how far behind the US is with broadband and well most electronics. By the time we catch up to where Japan is now, they'll be even further ahead.

Re: Ofcourse

Behind, behind, behind. I guess we should just get the government to take over our telecom industry, so we can be taxed to heaven for 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,TBits/sec "free" Internet!

She doesn't care what she is missing. Until they can sell her even 128k/128k DSL for $10 per month, she isn't interested.

There are enough people in the U.S. resistant to even $20 per month Internet that you will have to find some way to either provide the speed at that price, or convince them that they need the speed.

It is as much about what people are willing to pay, as about what we are able to deploy. Those of you who would love the speed will just have to accept that, unless you want to pick up the tab for 100M/10M Internet all by yourselves, you are stuck with what people are willing to pay for.

And how fast is fast enough? I can't see any difference between 1536 and 3008 in most cases. Damned if I am going to pay $60 per month for a measly 4M download, which is what I would have to pay for the Comcast 4M/384k package in this area, for "naked" cable Internet.

And I don't qualify for AT&T's 6016/768 package, even if I was willing to pay $27.99 per month to get it; but I am not.

You really need 100M/10M Internet? Tokyo has a lot of connections. Only $25 per month, I hear; assuming you can pay the rent for a place to live.

Why is it that every time I hear a mega X-G ultra-wide bandwidth solution it makes me throw up???

You can't even get get IM, TEXT MESSAGING, and EMAIL for a REASONABLE price, much less broadband via wireless!!!!

Re: 2050

Pfft, by 2050 aliens will have finally invaded and taken over and we will have conformed to our new alien masters. This of course wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for that damn weapon ban of 2049. If only the threat of the King of England invading would have been taken seriously.......

Re: 2050

In 2027 China bought the US interest's to all companies that were left after the Corporate wars of 2017-2019.

China already had massive holding's in the US under names that were more American or Japaneese looking. The GMC name was dropped in 2008 after a complete buyout by Nissan/SAAB.

After the abolishment of the US Senate, Congress and Presidency in favor of a Corporate, profit centered leadership, the US showed a mind boggling increase in tax revenue, which in turn payed off any existing Nation debt and had a monumental cash reserve. Monies were found to have be stored in Swiss accounts from the last 50 years.

The population now had free everything. From food and transportation to Medical services and personal communication devices for world wide communicating.

The Internet, as it was called, was replaced by the XZiono Net.
A system of implanted TX and RX devices powered by the human bodies own electrical fields, which proved to be far superior then satellite or the then DSL.

They even used wires to communicate back in the early 21st century. It was better than nothing it seems.

The Middle Eastern countries who, at one time, controled much of the worlds oil supply were assimilated into one large Isrealy state.

In 2050 oil was no longer needed accept as a substitue for the new synthetics, as a backup.

An now for the weekly castration statistics from "Poputrol".
