Between $4 and $6
(old news - 09:38AM Thursday Sep 07 2006)
Tipped by wifi4milez See Profile
Sprint yesterday announced they were the first carrier in the States to offer full length, pay per view films via mobile phone. The company is currently offering some 45 titles that cost between $3.99 and $5.99 each. Each title is viewable for somewhere between 24 hours and one week (depending on the title); the 24-hour film session can be extended another 24 hours for an additional 99 cents.

you have to understand, in Sprint's reality (not the same as ours BTW) one of our dollars is actually only worth $.50. that's why handsets on their shitty network cost twice as much and thats also why these nickel and dime trinket vending bullshit movies cost $4-6 and not 2-3, even though 2-3 is still outrageous.

Prediction: itunes 3G phone on ATT Wireless that plugs right into the existing itunes store with movies and other doodads for $1 each.

Sprint failed it years ago.

I'm already doing this for free Via ORB.com

I stream to my phone at 450kbps
any movie I have from my HD. I rip my dvd's do my HD before I travel, and then can watch them anywhere!

To use my cable I just fire up the Slingbox.

When your flight gets delayed at the airport thanks to the drunken person next to you or the flight before yours. (Or latest terrorist threat), any form of entertainment, even on a little screen will be enjoyable.

Re: You'll be amazed

you know my luck I would order one of those films and find out the rental is a few dollars and in really fine print "additional airtime charges apply" and whamo there goes 2 hours of your minutes or "normal data rates apply" Boom over your data usage limits and huge overage fee. Not in anyway saying this is happening but with my luck it would be what applies to my cell carrier plan.

Such a hidden set of ToS would not surprise me with Sprint.
I suppose this movie thing is supposed to distract us from the fact that their cell coverage is pitiful.

Is there anybody who ever made a trip without a book...?

I know most of the US is hooked on cheap Hollydumb movies but I can't imagine somebody travels without a book.

Wow. Perhaps you're reading the wrong type of books. Compare any movie that was derived from a book and in virtually every instance, the book was better.

Some people like to read entertaining books, and others don't. It has nothing to do with how good the book is or how enjoyable it is to you. If I travel, I read magazines, but for the most part I like watching movies on my PSP or playing games on my DS or PSP. Makes the time go by faster for me.

All that grammar and punctuation does tend to make books a bit boring plus if you're too busy reading you won't be able to keep an eye out for giant seed pods.

Exactly.
But you know somebody will be stupid enough to pay.
Movies are barely watchable on my G5 iPod.
On a phone I can imagine optometrist bills going up.
Sprint needs to spend more time improving Call Quality on it's networks and less time on gimmicks.

Battery life

I wonder how long before the battery goes dead? After 30 minutes into the movie??? LOL

Please, invest in something else, say, netflix or blockbuster (5.99/month).

Watch a movie on your cellphone???

I can't see how your cellphone battery could even last long enough to watch a full-length movie before it needs recharging.

Same model as that of Directv pay per view system. But hey if people watch music videos on an iPod, then why not on a cellphone?

I am sure I don't like it and would probably hate it but if there's a market for it, it's just another option.

This has to be the dumbest idea I have ever heard of. ipod screens are small enough at 2.5" (size of most camcorder screens) but I can't imagine watching a FILM that was meant to be viewed on a freakin' HUGE screen (or at least a TV) on a 16-bit, super tiny screen barely large enough to display phone #'s and maybe thumbnail sized pictures.

Guess there's a sucker born every second, and if you can tap their moolah out of thin air, why not.

Wow

These execs are really stupid.

This sure makes watching a movie on an iPod a lot more appealing. At least I'd own the movie forever and I have a way of playing the iPod out to a big screen TV where the quality is pretty damn good. Guess I'll wait til next week for that option instead.

Why?

This is absurd to even think about spending money on this, the audio could be good but obviously the video is waaaaayyy too small. To make sense phones are gonna have to get bigger again. And what about battery life...you're gonna need a lot of processing power for realtime video with audio and all those colors. Or you'd just have a whole new class of DVD/video players with cell phone capabilities.

Of course I expect to see the news stories about the fools walking through traffic wearing headphones and watching a movie falling down a manhole or getting creamed by a bus. This is just silly in my opinion. There are people who will pay anything just to look cool.

Not only a small screen...

but they will letter box the movie so that the panavision movie will display fully. Imagine loosing 30% of the already small real estate to letter boxing.

What a dumb idea. Carry a portable DVD player and just rent the movie.

I guess Mr. Barnum was right.

Re: Not only a small screen...

several years ago somebody posted a cartoon here that showed a couple of older guys trying to watch porno on their cell phones, one of them was complaining that you could only see is skin moving around on the screen. I have tried to find that cartoon but to date have not found it but it perfectly describes what is going on here.

Sprint?

Listen everyone I know thinking about watching movies seem to be a silly idea but sprint is really trying to impact the business. The price may be a little high again they are trying to offer everything on your cellphone the whole package to the customer what people say that a stupid idea DUUH? . In the far east it is a part of life while our country is so small minded about technology.

Sprint IS trying to impact the business b/c it is presently hurting big time. Its subscriber #s in recent quarters is dismal. Pressure exists to turn things around.

Sprint has always viewed itself as the premier wireless carrier when it comes to data services. It's voice network has never been the reason to subscribe to Sprint. Sprint took a bath the past few Qs b/c many of its subs left Sprint for Verizon b/c it offered a more extensive 3G network. Sprint was late getting its EVDO off the ground. It now needs a reason to bring customers back to Sprint.

It's well-announced WiMAX deal with Intel & MOT is one move. This one, to offer movies over its network is another. Both, IMHO, are somewhat ill-conceived, & risk for the carrier. But . . . these are desperate times for Sprint.
