story category Verizon DSL, Fios Growth Strong
Tops pre-BellSouth merger AT&T
(old news - 12:42PM Thursday Sep 07 2006)
tags: dsl · stats
Industry analyst Dave Burstein discusses the latest telco subscriber numbers and declares that Verizon is seeing better growth than AT&T. That's thanks in part to Fios deployment; Verizon adding 100,000 new Fios customers per quarter, according to his estimates. Verizon has been mixing DSL and Fios together in their quarterly statements, but should soon have a solid enough Fios subscriber base to break out those numbers proudly.

Burstein also gives a nod to our Fios deployment maps. "Zoom in to most clusters, and you easily confirm the current builds are overwhelmingly well to do suburbs, although Verizon swears the redlining will diminish in the next stage. Three state capitals are among the first to be served, Albany, Harrisberg, Richmond, as well as the D.C. suburbs where most regulators live."

Not surprising...

...considering AT&T ditched Project Pronto and I can still give a long list of areas that can't get DSL that Verizon would be more than happy to wire if they had them.

Re: Not surprising...

I guess Verizon is doing a great job. But with where I live. I don't see DSL from Verizon coming anytime soon. Been on dial-up for the past 2 1/2 years. But before I moved, I had cable broadband with Insight. SBC was my phone company. But I have Verizon now, and still hope from some kind of broadband from them.

Re: Not surprising...

Since VZ still mixes Fios and DSL, we don't know if it's "DSL Growth" or just "Broadband Growth", right?

And VZ can go build Fios in ATT neighborhoods any time they want--just as CLECs can. The haven't yet because they are still dividing the market along historical lines, and because it still makes sense to deploy residential fiber only if you have 90+ percent of the market to move onto it.

Re: Not surprising...

I believe the article stated "over 100,000 FIOS customers" and showed 329,000 total broadband.

Verizon what?

I still cant get Verizon DSL in the suburbs of Los angeles County. This News article is a LOAD! The Newsdesk needs to put down the Verizon Propaganda hotline now and then.

Re: Verizon what?

..So How does registering deem credibility? After all,You're registerd and no one takes you seriously

It just ergs me to see the Verizon repair trucks plasterd with "Get DSL" adverts, when fewer than 10% of the cities lines are capable od a DSL signal. The cable companies going to dominate my area for the next century!

...Heh,And after the adelphia/Comcast merger/ acquisition,Verizon's going to look even dumber with it's 2% market share! Verizon just isn't even a contender in the largest state in the union!

It's going to be funny when the day traders start scrambling!

Re: Verizon what?

I'm in the same boat. I can't get fios or dsl where I currently live in Hacienda Heights. My only real choice is Time Warner.

Re: Verizon what?

Hi. Just a few quick shots from another unregistered.

1. Verizon added 440,000 new high-speed internet users in Q2/06, including 110,00 FIOS users, so 330,000 'regular' high-speed. Source: Verizon.

2. with the exception of Qwest, the incumbent telcos typically offer DSL service to 75% of their service area. (So surprised to hear it's not in HHeights).

deployment maps are in the eye of the beholder

It's nice that he gives a nod to the maps, and yes FIOS is in the suburbs (rather than cities or rural areas), but that doesn't make his "redlining" comment accurate. deployment maps are a user created guide, hardly conclusive evidence of redlining.

Supposedly

Supposedly the Yermo CA area will get FiOS as a Verizon agent mentioned that It was coming soon and why would I move and possibly miss It and I'd not asked about It(Verizon also had marked the ground w/spray paint[between a paved road and the local freeway] and on two streets nearby, but only in red which has since faded to pink on the pavement, Yellow would be gone by now). With the possibility of a New Casino in Barstow and Walmart being rejected for building a Distribution center there, Walmart could come to Yermo as the land is cheap and It's very near the Barstow area. Barstow is about to have a new Home Depot open in October 2006, It's at the I15 fwy and L street.

Re: Supposedly

Yermo?

Sounds like a reject from Sesame Street

I think that its important to differentiate between DSL and Fios for Verizon because if you are going to look at long term studies, they should be treated as two different variables even if they are both owned by the same company.

Well It could be worse out here, The Town of Yermo, California is located in the Mojave Desert with its name derived from the Spanish word for desert. Located near Barstow CA between Las Vegas NV.

As for differentiating between DSL and FiOS, I do already as one is based on old technology(Copper) and the other is based on Fiber Optic cable and Its technology(I think that is what You mean). The ISP doesn't [own] the lines of course as I think You and other[s] know(Just as Sat/Cable doesn't own those Disgusting Head on commercials), That's what the phone company owns, Verizon the ISP owns the accounts It serves and yeah DSL here is pretty popular.

Expected

Fios will steal tons of new customers, along with $15 dsl getting dialup users.
