Many telco's are offering DSL without phone these days, it's called "Dry DSL" or "Naked DSL". Bell Canada started offering this sometime ago. And even if it's not widespread, this is the way the market is going, so while you are not entirely incorrect, you're not exactly up to speed either.

| Ok... I'll bite.
Cable internet (with slow upstream) in my area (Time Warner Cable - Road Runner) costs $50 without cable TV. Then add the VoIP service (another $23 or so), you are at $73 per month for internet and VoIP.
DSL through AT&T costs $27.99, plus the basic phone line being around $25. Thus, total cost is $53. I'm still $20 ahead.

OK, now add TouchTone, Call Waiting, Caller ID, Call Waiting Caller ID, 3-way calling, voicemail and various taxes and fees to that $25 phone line.

Bellsouth can give me a basic phone line for $10.55/month. With that I can make or recieve a single call at a time. If I want call waiting, thats an extra $5/month. If I want caller ID thats another $9/month. Running total so far is $24.55 WITHOUT TAX and all I can call for free is my local area code. Upgrade to unlimited long distance... another $30 or so.... So thats over $50/month without thinking of the $15+ of taxes on top of that..... -- Am Heimcomputer sitz' ich hier, und programmier' die Zukunft mir

Only Verizon has brains in the HSI area with FIOS. The other Bells are just awaiting the end of their existence.

| A DSL connection works better when you are closer to the provider's central office and slower when you are further away from the provider's central office.
Were as;
unlike DSL, cable performance doesn't depend on distance from the central cable office. A digital CATV system is designed to provide digital signals at a particular quality to customer households. On the upstream side, the burst modulator in cable modems is programmed with the distance from the head-end, and provides the proper signal strength for accurate transmission.

| No surprises here. In "developing" countries, you're more apt to find service by a telco, long before a cable company. No suprise there.
In Europe, so much of the population lives in high density cities and villages, I'd love to see the numbers on how much of the population lives in a dsl serviceable area.

However, if you can get a cable line there is a good chance you can get HSI, there is no distance limit, if it's there it's there.
