As of the end of June, Worldwide use of DSL technology for broadband access rose 38% to around 164 million users. According to the latest stats, strong growth of DSL use in the European Union is a big reason why. Some data:•North America: DSL use rose faster than cable modem subscriptions and overall, the market rose 31% to 26.7 million users.•The EU: Roughly 18 million new DSL users were added in the 12 months to June, an increase of 45%, bringing the total to 56 million, and making up slightly more than one-third of the global total.•Asia-Pacific: DSL use rose 9.5% to 29.8 million users•South and Southeast Asia: the number of DSL users rose 57% to 36.2 million, due largely to 11.6 million new subscribers in China.•Latin America: 3 million new subscribers for a total of 8.06 million•Middle East and Africa: 1.75 million new users for a total of around 3.8 million.

and i still dont know why..

voip is cheaper.. most cable co's let you choose to not have cable tv with broadband.. so why go with a phone company thats going to force you to have phone through them when u can get cable and voip??

Only in the us do they force that other areas don't. Here in Colombia I can get dsl without a dial tone. Instead I use wimax and voip.

Many telco's are offering DSL without phone these days, it's called "Dry DSL" or "Naked DSL". Bell Canada started offering this sometime ago. There are many users who have DSL only plus VoIP.

Define many because I personally can't name one off the top of my head. Then show me where it is that they offer this, as I doubt they do it in all their markets as well.

Verizon for one. Check out their website.

And even if it's not widespread, this is the way the market is going, so while you are not entirely incorrect, you're not exactly up to speed either.

Yeah, but they charge almost as much for just DSL as they would for DSL _and_ a basic phone line. Not really naked.

Verizon's dryline is only around $5 more a month for HSI. Much less than a basic phone line.

Yup. Just like cable charges almost as much for 'naked' cable modem service as they do for cable modem service 'clothed' in basic cable.

Where is your point?

Qwest has been doing Standalone dsl for quite awhile also. One of the first major telco's that actually offered it

Re: and i still dont know why..

Qwest does - cheapest route was with Qwest, net ISP and naked dsl line(no MSN) - and I hope they are in my neighborhood soon. I am stuck with cable right now, but would prefer DSL. Viva Upload

Bellsouth does not offer such a service, and they have coverage in 20% of the states...

And most cable companies charge you more for their internet service if you don't have cable TV.

It's really no different than what the incumbent telco's do....

Ok... I'll bite.

Cable internet (with slow upstream) in my area (Time Warner Cable - Road Runner) costs $50 without cable TV. Then add the VoIP service (another $23 or so), you are at $73 per month for internet and VoIP.

DSL through AT&T costs $27.99, plus the basic phone line being around $25. Thus, total cost is $53. I'm still $20 ahead.

OK, now add TouchTone, Call Waiting, Caller ID, Call Waiting Caller ID, 3-way calling, voicemail and various taxes and fees to that $25 phone line.

I get 1/2 of that stuff standard. The other stuff is $5 more total. You fail.

How are you comparing the many features of a VoIP service to the "basic" phone line?

That's not equal.

Re: and i still dont know why..

I can add all of those services and still end up very close to a wash... as I said before, going with cable and VoIP does not save me any money...

Because all those features are included with most VoIP services.

Bellsouth can give me a basic phone line for $10.55/month. With that I can make or recieve a single call at a time. If I want call waiting, thats an extra $5/month. If I want caller ID thats another $9/month. Running total so far is $24.55 WITHOUT TAX and all I can call for free is my local area code. Upgrade to unlimited long distance... another $30 or so.... So thats over $50/month without thinking of the $15+ of taxes on top of that.....

Comcast's fastest speed is $56 and voip is not available where I am. I pay $19.95 for phone and $27.99 for elite. Been with at&t for a while and they are pretty good have not had an outage in a long time.

Well, if US Telcos would offer, umm, like, SPEED, they would crush the Cable COs. I doubt 6megs compares to 10-20 mgs.

Only Verizon has brains in the HSI area with FIOS. The other Bells are just awaiting the end of their existence.

pretty sure I got DSL right now thru a teleco without a phone line through them. I don't have any kind of "telephone" service besides my cell phone.

A DSL connection works better when you are closer to the provider's central office and slower when you are further away from the provider's central office.

Were as;

unlike DSL, cable performance doesn't depend on distance from the central cable office. A digital CATV system is designed to provide digital signals at a particular quality to customer households. On the upstream side, the burst modulator in cable modems is programmed with the distance from the head-end, and provides the proper signal strength for accurate transmission.

No surprises here.

In "developing" countries, you're more apt to find service by a telco, long before a cable company. No suprise there.

In Europe, so much of the population lives in high density cities and villages, I'd love to see the numbers on how much of the population lives in a dsl serviceable area.

Distance problems will keep DSL down

Out here, most people live too far from the CO to get DSL, if their CO is even DSL equipped (mine isn't). However, if you can get a cable line there is a good chance you can get HSI, there is no distance limit, if it's there it's there.
